My Husband Used My Fortune to Help His Mistress Poison Me Chapter 1

I found out on a Tuesday.

Not because Caleb slipped up. Not because someone tipped me off. I found out because I borrowed his car to grab dry cleaning, and his GPS was still warm.

I sat in the driver's seat of his black Escalade, the engine idling, and stared at the screen. The route history was right there. Open. Like he hadn't even thought to clear it.

Maybe he hadn't. Maybe after three years of marriage, he'd stopped thinking of me as someone who would ever look.

Sea-Tac Airport. Tuesday, 11:47 a.m. Arrival.

I pressed my finger to the screen and scrolled back. The same route, two weeks before that. And once more the week before that.

I sat very still. Outside, a light Seattle drizzle tapped against the windshield. I watched a raindrop slide down the glass in a slow, crooked line.

Caleb had told me he was in Bellevue on Tuesday. A site meeting with the Hargrove development team. He'd kissed my forehead before he left. He smelled like his usual cedar cologne and fresh coffee. He'd said, "Don't wait up, it'll run late."

I'd believed him. I always believed him.

I pulled out my phone and opened the photo Reese had sent me two months ago — the last message I ever got from her before she went silent. A blurry shot, taken from across a street. Two figures outside a coffee shop near Pike Place. One of them was unmistakably Caleb. The other was a woman I didn't recognize then.

I recognized her now.

Giselle Webb. I'd looked her up after Reese's message, told myself I was being paranoid, and closed the tab. Caleb's college girlfriend. The one who'd moved to Europe years ago to run some biotech research firm. The one he'd mentioned exactly once, in passing, early in our relationship — "ancient history" was the phrase he used.

Ancient history had apparently just landed at Sea-Tac.

I set the phone down on the passenger seat. My hands were steady. That surprised me. I thought I'd be shaking.

Instead, I felt something cold and very clear settle into my chest, like ice water filling a glass.

I drove home. I did not pick up the dry cleaning.

---

The vitamin bottle was in the back of the medicine cabinet, behind his shaving kit. I'd noticed it three weeks ago — same label as my usual supplements, same white cap, but the pills inside were a slightly different shade. Ivory instead of white. I'd told myself it was a new batch. A different manufacturer. Nothing.

Today I picked it up and really looked.

The lot number on the back didn't match any product I could find online. The manufacturer's address resolved to a vacant lot in Zurich. I shook one pill into my palm and held it under the bathroom light. It was smooth. No score line. No embossed letters.

My vitamins had always had a small H stamped on one side.

These had nothing.

I put the pill back. I found a pair of latex gloves under the sink — left over from when I'd refinished the bathroom shelves last spring — and I put them on. Then I took the bottle, sealed it inside a zip-lock bag, and placed it in the inside pocket of my tote.

I did not cry. I did not sit on the bathroom floor.

I went to the kitchen, made coffee, and called Caleb.

"Hey." His voice was warm. Easy. "You okay?"

"Fine," I said. "Are you still at Canlis tonight? The reservation's at seven."

"Wouldn't miss it." A pause, and I could hear him smile. "Wear the blue dress. You look incredible in the blue dress."

"I will," I said.

I wore the blue dress.

---

Canlis sat above the ship canal, all glass and low light and the kind of quiet that costs money. I arrived ten minutes early and asked for a table with a view of the door. The hostess didn't question it.

I ordered sparkling water and watched the entrance.

Caleb walked in at seven-oh-two. He was in a charcoal suit, no tie, the top button open. He looked exactly like the man I married — tall, composed, the kind of handsome that made people glance twice. He scanned the room, found me, and his face opened into that slow, private smile he'd always saved just for me.

My chest pulled tight. I let it. Then I let it go.

He crossed the room and bent to kiss my cheek. "You wore it," he murmured.

"Sit down, Caleb."

Something in my voice made him pause. He straightened and looked at me — really looked — and for just a fraction of a second, something shifted behind his eyes. Then the smile came back, softer, concerned. "Everything okay?"

"Sit down."

He sat.

The waiter appeared. Caleb ordered without looking at the menu — he always did that, like he needed the room to know he belonged there. I waited until the waiter left.

Then I reached into my tote and set the zip-lock bag on the white tablecloth between us.

The vitamin bottle sat there under the candlelight, small and ordinary and devastating.

Caleb looked at it. His jaw didn't move.

"Sea-Tac Airport," I said. My voice was quiet. The couple at the next table couldn't hear me. "Tuesday the fourteenth. Tuesday the twenty-first. Tuesday the seventh." I folded my hands on the table. "Giselle Webb flew in from Frankfurt three weeks ago. You've picked her up three times. You told me you were in Bellevue."

The silence between us had weight.

"And those—" I nodded at the bottle "—are not my vitamins. The lot number is fake. The manufacturer doesn't exist. I've been taking them for at least six weeks."

Caleb's eyes finally moved from the bottle to my face. The candlelight caught the sharp line of his cheekbone, the careful stillness of his expression. He looked like a man choosing his next word the way a surgeon chooses a blade.

"Claire." Low. Measured. "Let me explain."

"I'm listening."

And I was. Every word. Every micro-hesitation. Every breath.

Because the man sitting across from me was a stranger wearing my husband's face, and I needed to know exactly how deep the lie went.
