After Finding My Husband in My Best Friend’s Bed Chapter 1

The closet smelled like dust and old wool. I pulled out a box of winter scarves, then another full of photo albums I hadn't opened in years. Ethan was at his conference in Boston. Or that's what he told me Thursday night when he kissed my forehead and said he'd be back Saturday evening. I had the apartment to myself and a long list of things I'd been putting off. The storage closet was at the top.

I shoved aside a stack of his college textbooks and my hand hit something hard. I pulled it out. A camcorder. Old, boxy, covered in a thin layer of grime. I didn't recognize it. We didn't own a camcorder. I turned it over in my hands, frowning, then carried it to the bedroom and plugged it into the television.

The screen flickered. Grainy footage appeared. A bedroom. Bright afternoon light slanting through sheer curtains. White linen sheets tangled across a mattress. And then I saw him.

Ethan.

Shirtless. Laughing. His hair messed up the way it gets after he runs his hands through it. He was lying on his side, propped up on one elbow, looking at someone just off camera. Then the camera shifted and I saw her.

Raven.

My best friend since eighth grade. Raven Hughes. She was wearing one of Ethan's shirts—I recognized it, the blue one with the frayed collar—and nothing else. She leaned over and kissed him. He pulled her down into the sheets. They were both laughing.

I stopped breathing.

The camera kept recording. Ethan turned toward it, grinning, and said something I couldn't hear. Then his voice came through clearly, casual and easy, like he was talking about the weather.

"I will never truly fall in love with Sasha."

Raven giggled. The sound was bright and careless. The screen went black.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the empty television. My hands were still holding the remote. I could feel my heartbeat in my throat. I pressed rewind and watched it again.

This time I didn't look at them. I looked at the room. The angle of the window. The particular shade of the linen—cream, not white. The framed print above the headboard, some abstract watercolor Raven bought at a street fair in Brooklyn. I knew that room. I had slept in that room two summers ago during a girls' weekend at Raven's place. That was her guest bedroom.

I pressed pause on Ethan's face mid-laugh and studied it. He looked happy. Relaxed. Like he had nothing to hide.

I ejected the tape, put the camcorder back in the closet exactly where I found it, and closed the door. I walked to the kitchen, poured myself a glass of water, and drank it standing at the counter. The apartment was silent. Outside the window, the city moved along like nothing had changed.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I just stood there and thought.

Ethan came home that evening a little after seven. I heard his key in the lock, then his voice calling out, warm and familiar.

"Sash? I'm home."

He walked into the kitchen carrying a grocery bag, still wearing his weekend conference clothes—dark jeans, a sweater I bought him last Christmas. He set the bag on the counter and kissed my forehead.

"I stopped for pasta stuff," he said. "Thought I'd make you dinner. How was your day?"

"Good," I said. "Cleaned out the storage closet."

"Oh yeah?" He pulled out a box of linguine, a jar of marinara, fresh basil. "Find anything interesting?"

"Just old junk," I said. "Nothing worth keeping."

He smiled and started filling a pot with water. I watched him move around our kitchen—our kitchen, the one we picked out together when we renovated two years ago—and I felt like I was watching a stranger. Every gesture I used to find endearing now looked like performance. The way he hummed under his breath. The way he touched my shoulder as he passed. Choreography.

We sat down to eat and he asked about my week. I told him about a new client, a penthouse renovation in Tribble. He listened and nodded and asked follow-up questions. He was good at this. He always had been.

Halfway through the meal, I set down my fork and looked at him.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course." He reached across the table and took my hand.

"Have you ever loved anyone else?"

He didn't hesitate. Not even for a second. He set down his wine glass, leaned forward, and cupped my face in both hands. His eyes locked on mine.

"Only you," he said. "Always you."

I searched his face for a crack. A flicker. Anything. There was nothing. He was flawless.

"I love you too," I said.

He smiled, kissed me gently, and went back to his pasta.

That night, Ethan fell asleep within minutes, his breathing deep and even beside me. I lay awake staring at the ceiling. The streetlight outside cast a thin line of yellow across the wall. I could hear the distant hum of traffic, the occasional siren.

I thought about the camcorder. I thought about Raven giggling. I thought about Ethan's face when he lied to me at dinner—so smooth, so certain.

This wasn't a mistake. This wasn't one drunken night. This was a system. An architecture. Two people working together, for years, to make a fool of me.

I turned my head and looked at Ethan's sleeping face. He looked peaceful. Innocent.

I made a decision then, silent and cold and final.

I would not confront them yet.

First, I would learn everything.
