Chapter 5

The food industry newsletter hit my inbox at six in the morning.

The headline was splashed across the top in bold black letters: *Chef Travis Webb Stuns at Exclusive Private Preview.*

I scrolled down. Dominic Voss, the venture capitalist backing the entire operation, had hosted an intimate dinner the night before for twenty top-tier investors and critics. The lead photograph showed Travis standing at the head of a candlelit table, holding a crystal wine glass. He looked polished and radiant in a tailored black jacket. Beside him, Voss had an arm slung over his shoulders, grinning like a proud father.

According to the article, Travis had held the room captive. He told charming stories about his "creative journey" and spoke at length about his "deep, sacred respect for American culinary heritage." Voss had stood up during the main course to give a toast. He called Travis "the rare visionary who bridges the soul of the past with the ambition of tomorrow."

The table had given him a standing ovation.

I read every single sentence twice. My pulse was completely flat. My coffee went cold on the counter, but I didn't care.

I looked at the date at the bottom of the article. The public launch was tomorrow night. Friday, seven o'clock, at a two-story glass venue in SoHo.

I picked up my phone and called Maxwell.

"Did you see it?" I asked when he picked up.

"I did," Maxwell replied, his voice calm and dry. "Let him climb a little higher, Soleil. The higher he goes, the louder the snap."

"Is everything set?"

"Everything is locked in," Maxwell said. "I'll see you tomorrow morning."

Thursday night, the apartment was completely dead.

I had already moved my clothes and personal belongings into a small sublet in Brooklyn earlier that afternoon. The closets were bare. The hangers sat empty on the rods. All that remained was my single leather carryall sitting by the front door.

I walked into the kitchen for the last time.

I pulled a single skillet from the stove and turned the gas flame to medium-low. From a small brown grocery bag, I took out half a chicken breast, two sprigs of fresh tarragon, a knob of butter, and a shallot.

It was my father's recipe. The very first one he taught me when I was nine years old.

I melted the butter. The pan hissed softly, filling the dark kitchen with the scent of sweet cream and toasted herbs. As I cooked, my father’s voice echoed in my head, soft and steady: *Never rush the pan, Soleil. If you force the heat, you lose the sweetness. Respect the craft.*

I seasoned the meat with coarse salt and cracked pepper. I basted the cutlet with a spoon, over and over, until the crust turned a deep, golden amber.

I didn't plate it for a photo. I didn't care about angles or ring lights.

I sat alone at the kitchen table with a fork and a glass of tap water. I ate in silence. The crust was crisp, the meat tender and fragrant. It tasted like home. It tasted like Sunday afternoons in my father’s sunlit house.

For seven years, I had handed my family's soul to a man who thought food was just a shortcut to fame. But as I swallowed that last bite, I knew something for certain.

He had the notebook. But the hands, the palate, and the lineage were mine.

I carried my plate to the sink. I washed it with warm water, rinsed it clean, and dried it with a towel. I set the plate back inside the cupboard and shut the cabinet door.

I picked up my bag from the floor. I didn't leave a note on the island. I didn't take a lingering look around the living room.

I walked out into the hall, pulled the door shut behind me, and let the lock click into place.

Friday morning came with a pale, overcast sky.

I sat at the long conference table in Maxwell's office. Dean Allen's legal representative sat across from us, tapping a stack of stapled folders.

Maxwell laid the master evidence file flat on the polished wood.

"Here is the package," Maxwell said, counting the items off one by one. "Exhibit A: the timestamped comparison video and side-by-side photo analysis. Exhibit B: Dean Allen's sworn, recorded video deposition verifying historical lineage. Exhibit C: certified documentation from the federal archives proving the Edwards collection is protected cultural property."

He tapped a blue-backed legal document.

"And here is the filed lawsuit for intellectual property theft, commercial fraud, and damages. Plus the immediate cease-and-desist order."

Maxwell looked up at me over his reading glasses.

"We had our back-channel contacts reach out to two of Dominic Voss’s primary co-investors two hours ago," he added quietly. "Once their legal counsel saw our filings, they called an emergency meeting. They are pulling their funding before Travis finishes his keynote."

In the corner of the room, Priya sat with her arms folded over her chest. She had flown in from Chicago the night before just to be here. She hadn't said a word all morning, but her dark eyes were blazing.

The room went quiet.

Priya stood up and walked over to my chair. She placed both hands firmly on my shoulders, leaning down until her cheek brushed mine. She squeezed my hand tightly.

"Your father would have stood up when you walked in today, Soleil," she said softly.

My throat tightened, but I didn't let a single tear spill over. I looked at the legal folder bearing my family's name.

"Thank you, Priya," I said.

I took a slow, deep breath, stood up, and slipped into my black coat.

"Let's go," I said.
