My Husband Used Our Rent Money on His Mistress Chapter 1

The fluorescent lights in Conference Room B buzzed like wasps trapped in a jar. I sat in the back row, arms crossed tight over my chest, trying to look like I was paying attention to the slide deck. I wasn't. I was counting seconds between contractions of pain.

Three months postpartum. Three months since I'd given birth in a hospital room with peeling linoleum while Jett texted his boss about a Monday deadline. Three months of nursing every two hours through the night while he slept in the guest room because the baby's crying 'disrupted his focus.' Three months of my body doing things I couldn't control—milk letting down when I heard any baby cry, engorgement turning my chest into a battlefield twice a day.

I pressed my forearm against my ribs. The pressure helped. Not much. Just enough.

Up front, Jett stood beside the projector in his crisp Oxford shirt and navy slacks, gesturing at a slide about 'Operational Excellence and Workplace Standards.' His voice carried that smooth confidence he used in meetings—the one that made people lean forward and nod. Beside him, Malayah Griffin perched on the edge of the table in a pencil skirt and heels, legs crossed, taking notes on a leather portfolio I'd seen in his car last week.

Malayah. The director's niece. That's what everyone called her. She'd been hired six weeks ago as the new administrative supervisor for our floor. Jett had made the introduction himself at a staff meeting, his hand resting on her shoulder. 'Mr. Reynolds wanted someone he could trust in this role,' he'd said. 'Someone with a strong understanding of operational standards.'

I'd smiled and nodded with everyone else.

I knew the truth. I'd known since I found the receipts in his jacket pocket—dinner at Canlis, a weekend at the Edgewater Hotel, a Burberry scarf that cost more than our grocery budget. I'd known since I heard him on the phone in the garage one night, voice low and warm in a way it never was with me anymore. 'No one knows, babe. It's safer this way.'

I'd said nothing. I'd folded the receipts back into his pocket and gone to bed.

That's what I did. I stayed quiet. I kept things smooth.

Jett advanced the slide. 'As part of our renewed commitment to professionalism,' he said, 'we'll be enforcing dress code standards across all departments. No exceptions.'

Malayah nodded, pen poised over her portfolio.

My blouse was damp under my arms. I'd leaked a little that morning while getting dressed and hadn't had time to change. The fabric clung to my skin, wrinkled across the stomach I was still trying to shrink back down. I looked around the room. Margaret Yuen sat two rows ahead in a faded sweater. Dave Holloway wore a Seahawks polo. Half the guys on the production floor were in company-issued shirts with oil stains on the cuffs.

Jett's eyes scanned the room. They landed on me.

He paused. His expression didn't change, but something tightened around his mouth.

'Edith,' he said. 'Can you stand up for a second?'

The room went quiet. Twenty faces turned toward me.

I stood slowly. My chest throbbed.

'Your blouse,' Jett said. He gestured vaguely at me, not quite meeting my eyes. 'It's not appropriate for a professional environment. Wrinkled. Damp. This is exactly the kind of thing we're talking about.'

I looked down. The fabric was wrinkled. It was damp. Because I'd been up since four a.m. with a screaming infant. Because I was still nursing. Because my body was doing things I couldn't stop.

I looked back up at him. My husband. The father of my child.

He looked at Malayah. She nodded, lips pressed together like she was trying not to smile.

'I think,' Jett said slowly, 'this is a good teaching moment. Edith, you're going to stand outside and copy the employee handbook by hand. All of it. Consider it a refresher on workplace standards.'

Someone coughed. Margaret Yuen stared at her lap.

'It's thirty-eight degrees outside,' I said quietly.

Jett shrugged. 'Then you'll work quickly.'

Malayah handed me a stack of paper and a pen. Her fingers were warm. Her nails were perfect—glossy red ovals. She smelled like jasmine and something expensive.

'Don't come back in until you're done,' she said.

I took the paper. I walked out.

The rain hit me the second I stepped through the glass doors. Cold, sharp, relentless. I stood under the awning for a second, then moved into the open. There was a bench bolted to the concrete. I sat down, set the stack of paper on my lap, and opened the handbook.

The words blurred. I started copying.

Inside, through the glass, I could see them all. Jett at the projector. Malayah beside him, arms crossed, watching me. Margaret Yuen looking away. Dave Holloway scrolling his phone.

My chest ached. The pressure built and built until I felt something give—a hot rush of release I couldn't stop. Milk soaked through the thin cotton of my blouse in two dark spreading circles. I looked down. The fabric clung to my skin, translucent and obscene.

I kept writing.

Jett's hand rested on Malayah's shoulder. She leaned into him slightly, said something that made him smile. He didn't look at me once.

I wrote until my fingers cramped. The rain soaked the pages, turned the ink into bleeding rivers of blue. I copied every word. Every policy. Every rule.

When I finished, I stood up. Water ran down my back. My blouse stuck to my ribs. I walked back inside, set the ruined stack of paper on Malayah's desk, and went to the women's restroom.

I changed into the spare shirt I kept in my locker. I locked myself in a supply closet during lunch and nursed my baby with shaking hands. Then I went back to my desk.

Jett passed me in the hallway at four-thirty. He didn't say anything. Didn't look at me.

That night, after he fell asleep in the guest room, I sat at the kitchen table with my engineering notebook open in front of me. The same notebook I'd used to write the formula that won him Employee of the Year. The same notebook I'd filled with calculations and solutions while he slept.

I turned to a blank page.

At the top, in my tight, precise handwriting, I wrote one word.

Evidence.
