Chapter 2

My mother went into surgery at 8:14 in the morning.

I know the exact time because I was watching the clock above the nurses' station when they wheeled her through the double doors. She had squeezed my hand right before they took her. Her fingers were cold. She told me not to worry in the way mothers do when they are worried themselves.

I sat down in the waiting room and called Phillip.

He picked up on the second ring. His voice was warm, concerned, already apologizing before I finished the sentence.

"Emergency board meeting," he said. "Completely unavoidable. I'll be there as soon as it wraps, I promise. How is she?"

"She's in surgery."

"She's going to be fine. She's strong." A pause. Voices in the background—low, indistinct. "I'll be there soon, sweetheart."

He hung up.

I sat with the phone in my lap for a moment. The waiting room smelled like hand sanitizer and stale coffee. A TV in the corner was playing a morning news segment with the sound off. A man across from me was asleep with his mouth open.

I opened the location app.

We'd set it up two years ago, after Phillip got a flat tire on the I-95 and couldn't get a signal. Practical, we'd said. Just in case.

His blue dot was not at the office.

It was at a hospital. Lenox Hill. Forty blocks south.

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I told the nurse at the desk I'd be back within the hour, walked to the parking garage, and drove south.

---

Lenox Hill has a private wing on the fourth floor. Quiet. Carpeted. The kind of hallway where the lighting is softer and the rooms have actual doors instead of curtains.

I found the room by following the sound of his voice.

The door was open. Not wide—just a few inches. Enough.

Phillip was sitting on the edge of the bed. His jacket was off, folded over the chair beside him. He was leaning forward, one hand moving slowly through Brinley Rivera's hair while she lay back against the pillows with the particular stillness of someone who knows exactly how they look.

She had a small bandage on her forearm. That was it. A bandage the size of a playing card.

He murmured something I couldn't hear.

She laughed. Soft and low. She turned her hand over and covered his.

I stood in that doorway for forty seconds. Maybe less. Maybe more. I wasn't counting anymore.

I didn't feel the thing I thought I would feel. There was no heat in my chest, no surge of something sharp and breaking. What I felt was quieter than that. More final.

It was the sensation of a door closing.

Not slamming. Just—closing. The soft click of a latch.

I turned around and walked back to the elevator. I pressed the button. I rode down to the lobby. I walked to my car, started the engine, and drove back to Mount Sinai.

I was back in the waiting room in fifty-three minutes.

The nurse at the desk nodded at me like I'd never left.

---

My mother came out of surgery at 2:47 PM. The doctor said it went well. She was groggy and pale and she made a joke about the hospital Jell-O that didn't quite land, and I held her hand and smiled and told her she looked great.

Phillip never came.

He texted at 6 PM. Meeting ran long. So sorry. How is she?

I didn't reply.

---

I called Kayla from the hospital parking garage at 8 in the evening.

She picked up on the first ring.

"Talk to me," she said.

"The thing you explained at the birthday dinner," I said. "The phone thing."

A beat of silence. Then: "Yeah."

"Walk me through it."

She didn't ask why. She didn't say are you sure or maybe you should wait or let's talk about how you're feeling first. She just said hold on a second and I heard her sit down somewhere quiet, and then she started talking.

We were on the phone for ninety minutes.

I had stopped at a Best Buy on the way home and paid cash for a tablet. The kind of thing no one thinks about twice. I set it up on the kitchen table while Kayla walked me through each step, her voice steady and clear, nothing like the woman who'd been laughing over Croatian sunsets three days ago.

At 11:58 PM, the screen populated.

Phillip's secondary account. Messages. Photos. Transfer records. All of it loading in clean, quiet rows.

I didn't read anything yet.

I just sat there for a moment and looked at it.

The kitchen was very still. The refrigerator hummed. Outside, a siren moved through the city and faded.

"Hallie." Kayla's voice came through the phone, still on the table beside me. "You okay?"

"Yes," I said.

And I meant it. Not because nothing was wrong. But because I was finally, completely, holding the truth in my hands.

Now I could begin.
