When My Husband Paid Men to Break Me Chapter 1

The chandeliers at The Metropolitan Club dripped light like melted diamonds. I stood near the marble column, holding a champagne flute I hadn't sipped from, watching Griffin across the ballroom. He leaned close to a woman in emerald silk. Too close. His hand brushed her bare shoulder. She laughed, tipping her head back, and he smiled the way he used to smile at me.

I looked down at my glass. The bubbles rose and popped. I counted them. One. Two. Three. It was easier than counting the minutes until I could leave.

"Mrs. Payne!" A photographer appeared at my elbow, camera already raised. "Just one shot for the society page?"

Before I could answer, Griffin materialized beside me. His hand settled on my waist like a brand. He pulled me close, his cologne sharp and expensive. "Of course," he said smoothly.

I tilted my head toward his shoulder. Smiled. The camera flashed.

Griffin's fingers dug into my hip. His mouth barely moved. "Smile wider. You look like a corpse. Try to be worth the dress."

The photographer lowered the camera. "Perfect! You two are magic together."

"Thank you," Griffin said. His hand dropped away. He stepped back, already turning. "Excuse me. Business."

I watched him walk back to the woman in emerald. She touched his arm. He laughed again.

The photographer was still talking. I nodded at the right moments. Said something polite. My face didn't move. Inside, I was doing math. Caroline's next treatment was forty-eight hours away. The invoice sat on my phone: $47,000. Griffin's assistant would wire it tomorrow if I stayed quiet. If I smiled. If I didn't make a scene.

So I smiled.

I left the gala at midnight. Griffin stayed. He always stayed.

The penthouse was silent when I got home. I kicked off my heels in the foyer and walked barefoot down the hall. My phone buzzed. A text from the hospital: *Caroline stable tonight. Resting comfortably.*

I stopped outside the living room. The lights were off, but I didn't need them. I knew exactly where it hung.

My mother's portrait.

She sat in a garden chair, her hands folded in her lap, her face soft and young. Younger than I was now. The artist had painted her in oils, every brushstroke careful. Her eyes were dark like mine. Her smile was small. Real.

I sank down onto the floor in front of it. The marble was cold through my dress. I pulled my knees up and pressed my forehead to the edge of the frame.

"I'm still here," I whispered. "I'm still holding on."

She didn't answer. She never did.

I stayed there until my legs went numb. Then I went to bed alone.

The next morning, I came back from the hospital before dawn. Caroline had been awake for a few minutes. She'd traced my knuckles with her thumb, her hand shaking. "You're dimming, sweetheart," she'd whispered.

I'd told her I was fine. I'd smiled. I'd lied.

Now I sat at the breakfast table, staring at my coffee. Griffin was already there, scrolling through his phone. He didn't look up.

"I have news," he said.

I wrapped both hands around my mug. "Okay."

"Melanie Ross is moving in."

The room tilted. I set the mug down carefully. "What?"

"Melanie. Daughter of an old family acquaintance. She needs a place to stay for a while." He sipped his espresso. Still didn't look at me. "She'll take the guest suite."

My mouth went dry. "Griffin. No."

He finally looked up. His eyes were flat. "No?"

"Her mother—" I stopped. Swallowed. "You know what her mother did. You know what happened to my family."

"That was years ago. Melanie's not her mother."

"Griffin, please—"

"Enough." He set his cup down hard. "You're being paranoid. And jealous. It's embarrassing."

"I'm not jealous. I'm asking you not to bring her here."

He stood. Buttoned his suit jacket. "She's moving in this afternoon. Be a gracious hostess, Liliana. Or I'll reconsider whether Caroline's next quarter of medical bills is a worthwhile investment."

He walked out.

I sat there. My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat on the table.

Melanie arrived at three. I heard the elevator chime. Heard her heels on the marble. I stayed in the bedroom. I couldn't look at her. Not yet.

But that evening, I had to pass her in the hallway. She was coming out of the guest suite, her luggage already unpacked. She wore a white cashmere sweater and jeans that cost more than my mother's funeral. Her perfume hit me first. Tuberose. Thick and sweet.

She stopped. Smiled.

I tried to walk past.

She leaned close. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Your mother couldn't hold on to a man either. Must be genetic."

Then she kept walking. Her heels clicked away down the hall.

I stood there. My hand closed around the silver locket at my throat. Inside was a dried petal from my mother's funeral wreath. I held it so tight the clasp cut into my palm.

I didn't move until I heard her door close.

Then I went back to my room and locked the door and sat on the floor with my back against it.

I didn't cry. I'd learned a long time ago that crying didn't help.

I just sat there in the dark and counted the hours until Caroline's next payment was due.
