Chapter 3

I read everything.

I sat at the kitchen table with the tablet in front of me and I read every single word.

Eighteen months of messages. The early ones were careful—professional language with just enough warmth underneath to be deniable. By month three, they weren't careful anymore. Pet names. Inside jokes. The specific shorthand of two people who have stopped pretending they're something else.

I kept reading.

There was a photo. An ultrasound. The kind of grainy black-and-white image that looks like static until you find the shape inside it. Brinley had sent it with three words: *It's happening, P.*

Phillip had replied within four minutes: *I'll take care of everything.*

I looked at that exchange for a long time. The refrigerator hummed. A cab honked somewhere below the window.

Then I scrolled to the wire transfers.

Three hundred thousand dollars. Not moved all at once—that would have been sloppy, and whatever else Phillip was, he wasn't sloppy. It came out in careful increments over eleven months. Eight transfers. Each one routed through a shell account and landing, finally, in a property transaction registered under the name Arian Rivera.

Brinley's brother.

A condo. Bought and paid for. Clean title.

I found the performance reports in a separate folder. Organized by fiscal quarter. My numbers—the accounts I had sourced, the contracts I had closed, the clients I had brought in and kept—all of it logged under Brinley Rivera's employee ID. Quarter after quarter. Methodical. Thorough.

He had been thorough about this. I had to give him that.

I created three encrypted backups across three separate cloud accounts, each with a password he would never guess because none of them referenced anything we had ever shared. Then I went to the printer in the home office, printed every document, and sealed the physical copies in a manila envelope.

I wrote nothing on the outside.

By 5:45 AM I was dressed. Coffee, black. Desk chair. I opened my laptop and started building the dossier.

---

The following week, I was very pleasant to be around.

At the office I smiled at the right moments. I answered emails promptly. I sat in two team meetings and contributed exactly the amount a person contributes when nothing is wrong.

Brinley was in the Tuesday meeting. She sat two seats down from me and took notes on her laptop and once, when I made a point about Q4 projections, she nodded along like she was hearing it for the first time.

I nodded back.

At home, I ate dinner across from Phillip and answered his questions in short, even sentences. He told me about a conference call that had run long. He asked if I wanted to order Thai. I said sure. He poured himself a scotch and talked about something else and I watched his mouth move and felt nothing except a very clear, very focused sense of direction.

He noticed nothing.

Of course he didn't. He had never really been watching me.

During the days, I worked. I cross-referenced every wire transfer date against Phillip's corporate expense calendar—the one synced to the company server, the one I still had access to. The embezzlement trail was clean and unambiguous. Date, amount, account. Eight times.

I found my original fellowship application in the HR system. Still there. Timestamp intact. I had submitted it four months before Brinley's application existed. I documented the discrepancy, screenshotted the metadata, and added it to the dossier.

The dossier was getting thick.

---

I met with the attorney on a Thursday morning, in an office on Park Avenue with a view of nothing interesting. She was efficient and unsentimental, which was exactly what I needed.

We drafted a separation agreement. The terms protected my financial interests and established my independent claim to the marital assets before any corporate recovery proceedings could create complications. She explained the timeline. I asked three questions. She answered them clearly.

I signed where she indicated.

I packed over two evenings while Phillip was at the office. I was careful about it. Clothes I would actually need. My documents. My laptop. A small box of things from the bedroom closet shelf that were mine before he ever existed.

The last thing I took was the framed photo from my office bookshelf. Me and David Hamilton at my university graduation. I'm twenty-two in the picture. My uncle has his hand on my shoulder and he's looking at me like I've already done something worth being proud of.

It had been sitting in plain sight for years.

Phillip had never once asked who the man was.

I wrapped it in a sweater and set it in the bag.

The furnished apartment was on the fourteenth floor of a building in Midtown. I had rented it under my own name and paid the first three months in advance. It was quiet. Clean. The windows faced east.

I set the photo on the windowsill.

Then I sat down at the desk, opened the dossier, and thought about The Plaza Hotel.

The annual gala was six weeks away.

Six weeks was enough.
