Chapter 1

I woke up and didn't know where I was.

Not in the disoriented, half-asleep way. I mean I looked at the bedroom ceiling and felt genuinely, completely blank. The curtains were pale gray. The pillow beside mine had a dent in it. Somewhere in the apartment, something smelled like tea.

I sat up slowly. My body knew the room. My feet found the floor without looking. But my chest was quiet in a way that felt wrong — like a house where all the furniture has been removed and you keep reaching for chairs that aren't there anymore.

My mother was at the kitchen table.

Gloria Perkins doesn't startle easily. She was sitting very still, both hands wrapped around a mug, and when I walked in she looked at me the way you look at someone you've been waiting for. Not with relief. With something more careful than that.

There were papers on the table beside her cup. A pen. And a gold band I didn't recognize at first.

"Sit down, Natalie," she said.

I sat.

She told me everything. Quietly, in order, without softening it. Anthony Griffin — my husband of five years, apparently — had given me something the night before. An experimental compound. Developed in his own lab. It targeted the neural pathways associated with emotional memory. He had filed for divorce before dawn.

I listened. I kept waiting for something to break open inside me. Nothing did.

When she finished, I reached across the table and picked up the gold band. I turned it over once. Then I set it beside the papers.

"Okay," I said.

Gloria's knuckles went white around the mug.

I walked through the apartment after that. I don't know what I was looking for. Evidence, maybe. Some version of myself I could recognize.

There were photographs everywhere. Me and a man with dark eyes and a careful smile, on a beach, at what looked like a work event, in front of a Christmas tree. I picked one up and studied his face the way you study a stranger's face in a crowd. Good-looking. Composed. Nothing.

On the bookshelf I found a card in my own handwriting. Our third anniversary, based on the date. I read every word. The handwriting was mine — I knew that from the shape of my lowercase e's — but the feeling behind the words belonged to someone I had no access to. Someone who had loved this man so completely she'd written it down and saved it.

I set the card back exactly where I found it.

From the doorway, my mother watched me. She didn't say anything. She just stood there with her mug and her carefully neutral face, and I understood without being told that she was giving me the space to find my own footing. I was grateful for that.

She drove me to a chapel that afternoon.

It was small and over-decorated — white flowers on every surface, candles that cost more than they should have. There was a woman in a wheelchair at the altar. Jolene Riley, my mother told me quietly as we stood at the back. Anthony's childhood friend. The reason for all of it.

Anthony stood beside her in a dark suit. He looked like a man performing the most important moment of his life for an audience he needed to believe him.

I watched. A woman in a wheelchair, a man with his jaw set tight, a minister reading words about love and sacrifice. The guests were crying. Someone had brought an actual string quartet.

Anthony turned and saw me.

I could see what he expected. I could read it in the way his breath caught, the way his hands stilled. He expected devastation. He expected me to fall apart in the back of his wedding chapel and give him the confirmation that what he'd done had mattered.

I tilted my head slightly.

"The staging is almost convincing," I said. Not loudly. Just clearly.

The woman next to me inhaled sharply. Anthony's face did something complicated.

I turned and walked out.

My mother fell into step beside me. At the door, she put her hand on my shoulder once — brief, warm, certain — and then we walked to the car in the thin afternoon light.

She made pasta that evening. We sat at her kitchen table and she asked how I was feeling.

I thought about it honestly. Fork halfway to my mouth, actually thinking.

"Fine," I said. "Not pretending-fine. Actually fine. And I think that's the strangest part."

She was quiet for a moment. "The person who would have been devastated," she said, "loved him very much."

I turned that over. Set it down gently.

"Can I have more rice?"

She got up and served me more rice. We ate. Outside, it had started to rain.

I went back to work the following Monday.

Melissa Cross was at her desk when I arrived. I watched her face go through four or five expressions in about two seconds — surprise, confusion, a kind of fascinated discomfort. She'd clearly been expecting something. Red eyes, maybe. Distraction. The visible wreckage of a woman whose husband had just married someone else.

I set my bag down, opened my laptop, and pulled up the quarterly report I'd drafted Thursday night.

By noon, Melissa had told at least three people that it was like watching a completely different person wearing my face.

Across the open-plan office, my supervisor Diane Coleman looked up from her desk. She watched me for a long moment. Then she opened a new document and began to type.
