Chapter 4

The ceiling was wrong.

I knew that before I knew anything else—before the taste of metal on my tongue, before the weight pressed into the mattress beside me. Our bedroom ceiling has a water stain near the vent, shaped like a comma. This one was blank. White. A stranger's ceiling.

I turned my head slow, the way you'd turn a key in a lock you didn't trust. A man. Late twenties, maybe. Sleeping on his back with his mouth open, one arm flung across a pillow that wasn't mine. I didn't recognize him. My dress was twisted around my hips, the zipper still fastened at the top, my bra strap dug into my shoulder at an angle that told me someone had arranged this scene in a hurry and hadn't cared enough to get it right.

I sat up. The room tilted once, gently, then settled.

My hand went to my ear before my mind caught up with why. Nothing. No pearl, no familiar weight against my neck. I checked the other ear. Also bare. Stella's earrings—the first thing she ever gave me, fifteen years ago, still thin and trembling from a hospital bed—were gone.

I didn't cry. I didn't wake the stranger. I picked up my phone off the nightstand—2:47 a.m., the screen told me, in numbers so clean and ordinary they almost felt like a joke—and I started taking pictures. The rumpled sheets. The man's face, angled so it wouldn't look like I'd meant to. The empty nightstand where my earrings should have been. The room service tray by the door, untouched, a bottle of wine that wasn't the Burgundy Trevor had poured for me hours ago.

Then I got dressed in the dark, quiet as a thief in my own crime scene, and I left.

The clinic was four blocks north, the kind of place with hard plastic chairs and a nurse who didn't ask why a woman in a wrinkled cocktail dress was requesting a full blood panel at three in the morning. I told her anyway. Suspected drugging. I want everything documented—time, symptoms, missing personal items. She wrote pearl earrings, approx. value unknown, last seen 8:15 p.m. in a hand that didn't shake, even though mine, finally, had started to.

By four, I was on the phone with Diane Whitfield, sitting on a bench outside the clinic while the city exhaled around me, garbage trucks and taxi horns, life continuing on schedule like nothing had happened.

"Say that again," Diane said.

I said it again. She didn't ask me if I was okay. She asked me if I still had the clinic's case number. That was when I knew I'd hired the right person.

By eight, it didn't matter what I'd documented. The photos were already everywhere.

I saw the first one because my assistant texted it to me with three exclamation points and no context, thinking, I suppose, that I hadn't seen it yet myself. Then a second. A third. Blurred, grainy, timestamped—me and the stranger, arranged into something that looked, to anyone who hadn't lived it, exactly like betrayal. Priya Anand's fingerprints were all over the captions. Real estate mogul's wife caught cheating—sources say marriage has been crumbling for months, tanking company morale. My name, spelled correctly for once, trending by nine a.m.

Two brands emailed by noon to suspend our consulting contract, pending review. A woman I'd mentored for three years didn't return my call. Strangers I would never meet told me, in comment after comment, exactly what kind of person I was. I read it once, start to finish, the way you make yourself look at a wound before you bandage it. Then I closed the app and didn't open it again.

I went to work instead.

Diane's office became my second home that week. I sat in her leather chair in yesterday's clothes, drafting subpoena requests for hotel security footage, humming some old Ella Fitzgerald tune under my breath without noticing I was doing it until Diane glanced up from her legal pad.

"You do that when you're thinking," she said. Not a question.

"My mother used to sing it," I said, and didn't explain further. She didn't ask.

We subpoenaed the clinic's toxicology report. We filed for the hired stranger's payment records under attorney letterhead, careful and quiet, nothing that would tip anyone off before we were ready. I asked Marcus Chen to find the photographer—the one who'd apparently been blacklisted from two gossip sites for selling unauthorized candids and had, evidently, found new employment.

He called me on the third day, seventy-two hours almost to the minute since I'd woken up beside a stranger with my earrings gone.

"Found the payment trail," he said. "Routed through a shell account. Same one that's been covering the penthouse lease."

"Trevor's."

"Trevor's," he confirmed.

I wrote the date in my ledger. I wrote the amount, the account number, the connection. I didn't feel triumphant. I felt the way I imagine a surgeon feels, halfway through a long operation—steady hands, clear eyes, and no room yet to feel anything at all.
