Chapter 5

Marcus met me in a parking lot off Lexington, engine running, like we were trading something illegal. Maybe we were.

"It's clean," he said, handing me a small drive. "Forty-seven minutes. You want the summary or you want to just listen?"

"I'll listen."

He nodded like he understood, though I don't think anyone could have. I waited until he pulled away before I plugged the drive into my dashboard. I didn't drive anywhere. I just sat there, hands on the wheel, engine off, and pressed play.

Trevor's voice came first, loose with champagne. "Once the shares transfer, I don't need the board's permission for anything. That's the beauty of it."

Aleah, laughing. "And your parents?"

"My parents." A pause, ice in a glass. "They're deadweight, Lee. Two old people who've outlived their usefulness. Once the trust restructures, they're gone. Attorney says it's easy to backdate a signature if you know who to pay."

She laughed again. Suggested a name. He wrote it down—I could hear the pen.

I listened to all forty-seven minutes once, then I played it again, straight through, my face doing nothing at all. When it ended the second time, I drove to Diane's office. I didn't cry on the way. I hummed something instead, low, without meaning to, until I caught myself at a red light and stopped.

"That's your husband," Diane said when I gave her the transcript I'd already typed by hand, word for word.

"That's a stranger," I said. "He just happens to have Trevor's voice."

---

Abraham called two nights later. I almost didn't answer—unfamiliar hour, unfamiliar dread—but I did.

"Come for dinner Sunday," he said. No hello. "Bring nothing. Just come."

He didn't ask about the photos. A cousin of Stella's had shown him, apparently, some blog post with my face stretched across it, and he hadn't asked if it was real. That silence told me more than any question could have.

Stella opened the door herself Sunday evening, before I'd even knocked twice. She took both my hands in hers, the way she has since the week I came home from the hospital fifteen years ago, thin and grateful and certain I owed the world an explanation for still being alive.

She looked at me for a long moment. Just looked.

"I know you," she said.

That was all. No question about the man in the hotel room, no mention of the headlines. Four words, and somehow they held more than a hundred questions would have.

We sat at their table for four hours. Roast chicken, the good wine Abraham saves for people he trusts. I didn't tell them everything. Not yet. But something in my chest loosened, just slightly, the way a stitch loosens before it's ready to come out entirely. I wasn't carrying it alone in that house. Not for four hours, anyway.

---

Trevor announced his press conference on a Tuesday. Two days' notice, splashed across a release Priya Anand had clearly polished herself—wounded husband, betrayed by his wife's infidelity, exercising his right as CEO to protect the company's integrity. I read it twice at my desk, checking the date, the time, the location. Scott Group headquarters. The same lobby where I'd once negotiated our first joint venture.

I called Diane.

"He's giving us a stage," she said.

"He's giving himself one," I said. "He just doesn't know yet whose name is on the marquee."

We set a date. His.

---

The night before, I drove to Abraham and Stella's with a small speaker and a request so simple it barely sounded like one.

"I need you to listen to something," I said, at their kitchen table, the same table we'd eaten at four hours long just days before.

Abraham didn't ask what it was. He folded his hands and nodded, the way he does before signing anything he already suspects will cost him.

I pressed play.

Forty-seven minutes. Trevor's voice, loose and certain. Aleah's laugh, sharpening every few minutes into something colder. My parents. Deadweight. Backdate a signature. Once they're no longer useful.

Abraham didn't move. Not his hands, not his jaw, not even the small tremor that usually lives at the corner of his mouth when he's holding something back. He sat through all forty-seven minutes like a man watching a house burn down from the inside, knowing there was nothing left worth saving, only the shape of what used to stand there.

When it ended, the kitchen was so quiet I could hear the refrigerator hum.

Stella reached across the table first. She didn't say anything dramatic. She just took my hand, the way she always has, and didn't let go—not when Abraham finally exhaled, long and low, not when he stood and walked to the window and stood there with his back to both of us for a full minute, not for a long time after that.

"Tomorrow," Abraham said finally, still facing the glass, "is going to be very different than my son thinks it will be."

Stella's hand tightened around mine. I didn't say anything. I didn't need to. Some debts, I was starting to understand, get repaid in silence.
