When His Mistress Took My Place

9.6 / 10.0
The wife once cherished Tuesday mornings—cartoon reruns, her grandmother's market errands, a rhythm that felt like home. Now those hours belong to a leather-bound registry, a gold-spined book Sebastian insisted upon, where every entry documents their marriage's slow decay. Across the table, his mistress—barely twenty-four, polished, deliberate—watches. Each signature erases another piece of a shared history. As the wife records this quiet unraveling, she must decide: hold onto a ghost of what they were, or confront the woman who has taken her place. A modern romance of betrayal, self-reclamation, and the courage to walk away.

When His Mistress Took My Place Chapter 1

Tuesday mornings used to mean something. Coffee and cartoons when I was seven. Farmers markets with my grandmother when I was twelve. Now Tuesday means the registry.

I sat at the dining table and opened the leather-bound book. Black cover, gold spine. Sebastian had it custom-made. He thought that was funny.

The woman across from me was maybe twenty-four. Pretty, in a polished, effortful way. Her hands rested on her stomach—six months along, maybe seven. She recited her information the way you'd read from a form. Name: Cassidy Hale. Phone number. Email. Due date: March 11th.

I wrote it down. My handwriting was neat. It was always neat.

From the kitchen doorway, Sebastian watched us. He was in a gray shirt, sleeves pushed up, mug in hand. Not reading anything. Not doing anything. Just watching, with that faint half-smile he wore when he was entertained by something small.

Cassidy glanced at him once. He gave her nothing back. She looked down at her lap.

I capped the pen and closed the book.

"Thank you," I said. "Someone will be in touch."

She left without making eye contact with either of us. The elevator doors closed. The penthouse went quiet again.

Sebastian finished his coffee and set the mug in the sink. He didn't say anything to me. There was nothing to say. This was just Tuesday.

I sat at the table a moment longer, my hand resting on the cover of the registry. Outside, Manhattan was bright and cold. Forty-three floors below, yellow cabs moved in tight lines. People walked fast, heads down, breath fogging in the November air.

Nobody up here was moving at all.

---

Two days later, he told me about the necklace.

We were at breakfast. I'd made eggs. He was on his phone, thumb scrolling, fork moving to his mouth on autopilot. I was drinking my chai and reading nothing, just watching the steam rise from the cup.

"I'm giving that old diamond thing to Diana," he said. Still looking at his phone. "The one from your grandmother. It's been sitting in that drawer for years. Seems like a waste."

I put my cup down.

The necklace was nineteenth century. Diamond center stone, sapphires around it in a starburst setting, the kind of piece that jewelers photographed carefully and spoke about in low voices. My grandmother had worn it to every important occasion of her life. She put it around my neck the week before she died. Her hands had been cold but steady, and she'd said, *You keep this. This is yours.*

It was the only thing in this entire apartment that was actually mine.

"It's worthless sentimentality taking up drawer space," Sebastian added, like he was doing me a favor by clarifying.

His phone buzzed. He picked it up, stood, walked toward the hallway. The conversation was already over for him. It had barely been a conversation at all.

I sat very still. The eggs were getting cold. The steam from my chai had stopped rising.

Something moved behind my eyes—a hairline fracture, thin as a paper cut. I pressed my fingers flat against the table and breathed.

I said nothing. He was already gone.

---

That night I went to get ready for bed and found the master bedroom door closed.

Through it, I could hear music. Low, unhurried. A woman humming along to something I didn't recognize.

I stood in the hallway for a moment. Then I knocked once, lightly, more out of reflex than hope.

The door opened four inches. Diana Voss looked at me from the gap. She was wearing my silk robe—the ivory one, the one my grandmother had given me the same Christmas as the necklace. Her dark hair was loose. She looked at me the way you look at a delivery person who's come to the wrong floor.

"Sebastian said you'd need the guest room," she said. And closed the door.

I stood in the hallway with a pillow under my arm.

I went to the dresser first—the one in the hallway, the narrow one—and opened the jewelry drawer. Empty. Of course it was empty. I took the velvet box anyway, the one that had held the necklace, and carried it with me to the guest room.

The couch was small. I made it up without turning on the light. I lay down and pulled the blanket to my chin and held the empty box against my chest with both hands.

The ceiling was white. The city hummed forty-three floors below. Through the wall, I could hear Diana's music, faint and continuous.

Three years. I had been bending for three years—quietly, carefully, without drama, without a sound anyone could point to. I had told myself that bending was the same as surviving. That surviving was the same as love.

Something broke. Not loudly. Not with tears or a gasp or any of the sounds grief is supposed to make. Just a clean, internal snap—the way a green branch finally gives after a long winter.

I lay still until the sky outside the window turned gray, then pale, then light.

Then I got up, showered, dressed, and made one phone call.

Conor answered on the second ring.
