Chapter 3

The penthouse Trevor thought I didn't know about had floor-to-ceiling windows facing the East River. I learned that from Marcus Chen's report, not from a confession. I pictured it anyway, the way you can't help touching a bruise—Aleah curled on the arm of some obscenely white sofa, Trevor pacing in front of the glass with his phone in his hand, the city lights making him look important in a way his balance sheets no longer did.

I didn't need to picture the conversation. I got the transcript three weeks later, word for word, in a dead man's voice from a recorder sewn into calfskin.

"She's not stupid, Trevor." Aleah's breathy hospital voice was gone here, replaced by something flatter, faster. "She's already pulled capital. If she pulls the company too, I'm done. We're done."

"She won't." A pause, ice against glass. "She still thinks this is a marriage."

"Make her think something worse, then. Give the world a reason to look away from you and at her instead."

That was the night they built it—photographs, a hired man, a hotel room, a headline. Aleah knew a photographer, someone who'd shot for a gossip blog before getting quietly blacklisted for selling unauthorized candids; discreet enough, hungry enough. Trevor knew a man through a contact three degrees removed from his own name, the kind of arrangement he was certain could never be traced back to Scott Group letterhead.

I didn't know any of this yet, the week the idea took shape in that borrowed penthouse. I only knew what Marcus Chen's report told me about a leased two-bedroom, and a name on a subsidiary account, and a gut feeling I'd learned not to argue with anymore.

So I went to the hospital.

Aleah was being "monitored," though the cardiologist's notes Marcus had pulled showed nothing wrong with her heart that a stress test couldn't have ruled out in twenty minutes. I brought a box wrapped in the boutique's signature ivory ribbon, a handwritten card tucked under the bow. *For your recovery. No hard feelings between us—only Trevor's to sort out.* I'd practiced the handwriting to look sincere. It wasn't hard. I've spent a decade writing things I didn't mean into contracts other people signed.

The bag inside was real—limited edition, waitlisted for eight months, the kind of thing a twenty-three-year-old with a taste for other women's husbands would recognize instantly and never think to question. Sewn into the lining, beneath a seam no factory inspector would ever find suspicious, was something considerably cheaper and far more valuable. Voice-activated. Three weeks of battery. I'd learned about it from Marcus, who'd learned about it from a man who used to do surveillance for divorce attorneys before Diane Whitfield hired him full-time.

I handed the box to a nurse at the station, said it was a gift for Ms. Morales, and left before anyone could ask me anything I didn't want to answer. I told no one. Not Diane. Not Marcus. I simply went home, opened my ledger, and waited the way I've always waited—still on the surface, working underneath.

The dinner came ten days later.

Trevor chose the restaurant—a private room at a place on the Upper East Side with a wine list longer than the lease on our marriage. Candles. My favorite Burgundy, a bottle he'd once memorized the name of to impress my father, back when impressing people still cost him something. He wore the gray suit I'd bought him for our fifth anniversary. He held my chair. He apologized—for the slap, for Aleah, for "losing himself," the whole performance so smooth it might have worked on the woman I was three years ago.

I let him believe it was working now.

"I want us to try," he said, refilling my glass before I'd finished it, his hand steady in a way that should have told me everything. "I know I don't deserve it. But I want to try."

"Okay," I said, and drank.

The restaurant's warmth thickened around the edges of my vision faster than wine should. Twenty minutes, maybe less. The candlelight smeared into long gold ribbons. Trevor's face swam closer, concerned, gentle—a stranger wearing my husband's features.

"You've had too much," he was saying, to me, to the maître d', to no one. His hand closed around my elbow, guiding me up, out, through a doorway that seemed to tilt sideways as I passed through it. I remember thinking, with the last clear thread of my own mind, that I should be frightened.

I wasn't. Somewhere underneath the fog, some cold, patient part of me was still counting—still filing this moment away, dated and cross-referenced, one more brick in a wall I'd been building for weeks without him knowing.

The last thing I registered was his voice, low and practiced, murmuring an apology to a stranger for his wife who'd simply had too much to drink.

Then the room went dark, and I let it.
