Chapter 1

The garage at Scott Group headquarters empties out by eight. By nine, on a Tuesday, it's just me, the hum of fluorescent tubes, and the echo of my heels against concrete. Trevor skipped tonight's board meeting. Fifth one in a row. I used to make excuses for him in my head—traffic, a headache, a call that ran long. I stopped making them somewhere around the third.

I pressed the fob and my SUV blinked awake, headlights cutting twin cones through the dark. I was three steps from the driver's door when a shape lurched into the light.

Aleah Morales. I knew her name before I knew her face—twenty-three, an intern in acquisitions, the kind of girl who laughed a half-second too long at things Trevor said in meetings. She clutched her chest, staggered, and folded against my hood like something out of a soap opera. Her breathing came in these theatrical little gasps, too rhythmic, too controlled for a woman actually dying.

"Help," she wheezed. "Please—my heart—"

I didn't move for a second. Something in me, some old cold instinct, noticed how carefully she'd angled herself to land in the glow of my headlights and not in the shadows six feet to her left. I called 911 anyway. I knelt beside her anyway. Whatever she was doing, I wasn't going to be the woman who let a girl die on a technicality of suspicion.

Trevor arrived in under four minutes.

Not from the elevator that led up to our floor. From the other one—the private one that served the residential tower next door, the one where Scott Group leased a two-bedroom penthouse for "visiting clients." I watched him come through those doors already knowing, in some buried, humming part of my chest, exactly what that meant.

"Move," he said, not to me. To the security guard. He dropped to his knees beside Aleah like a man in a movie, cradling her face in his hands. "Maya—Aleah. Aleah, look at me."

"Trevor." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "She stepped in front of the car. I braked in time. I didn't hit her."

He didn't look up. "Not now, Maeve."

"I'm telling you what happened."

"I said not now." His jaw was tight, his eyes wet in a way that had nothing to do with me. Two paramedics pushed past, a gurney rattling over the concrete. One of the security guards, a heavyset man named Otis who'd worked the garage for six years and always said good evening to me by name, wouldn't meet my eyes.

Trevor pulled out his phone before the gurney had even cleared the doors.

I knew the account he opened. I'd built the spreadsheet that fed it—three million dollars, ring-fenced eight months ago for Abraham's bypass and Stella's kidney procedure, money I had personally moved between accounts at two in the morning so it would clear escrow before their surgical date. I watched his thumb move across the screen. I watched the transfer field populate. I watched him type Aleah Morales – emergency medical compensation into the memo line like he was paying a parking ticket.

"Trevor." One word. I didn't raise my voice.

"She could have died, Maeve." He still wasn't looking at me. "Because of you."

The confirmation screen flashed green. Transfer Complete. I watched three million dollars—his parents' hearts, their kidneys, their remaining years—vanish into an account that, I would later learn, was six weeks old and linked to a Manhattan penthouse lease neither Abraham nor Stella knew existed.

I said nothing. There was nothing left to negotiate with a man who had already made his choice, standing over a woman clutching a performance of a heart attack while paramedics carted her toward an ambulance she probably didn't need.

My face, I imagine, did not move at all.

That night, in the penthouse that still smelled like Trevor's cologne, I took out the ledger. Not a metaphor—an actual leather notebook, cracked spine, mother's handwriting still faintly visible on the inside cover where she'd written my name at seven years old, before I inherited the habit of keeping it. Every kindness. Every cruelty. Dated, cross-referenced, filed like evidence because that's exactly what it was.

I drew one line under Trevor Scott. Then I photographed the wire confirmation, forwarded it to an email address with no name attached to it, and sat very still in the dark for the better part of an hour.

Then I picked up my phone and typed: best divorce attorneys, Manhattan, discretion guaranteed.

By morning I had a name—Diane Whitfield—and by noon I had pulled eighteen months of subsidiary accounts I had never bothered to audit because I trusted my husband with the parts of the business I didn't watch. A fifteen-thousand-dollar-a-month "client hospitality suite." Jewelry. A leased Mercedes. I printed every page, locked them in my office safe, and made two calls.

Diane Whitfield answered on the second ring. "Tell me everything," she said, "from the beginning."

Marcus Chen, the investigator she recommended within the hour, was blunter. "Give me forty-eight hours," he said. "I'll give you a paper trail you can build a case on."

He delivered in forty-six. Six months, the report read. Shell company. Traceable to Trevor Scott's personal holdings.

I closed the folder, and I made the first call of what I understood, with perfect clarity, was no longer a marriage to save—but a war to win.
