My Husband Drugged Me to Protect His Mistress

Chapter 2

The private suite smelled like lilies and antiseptic, an expensive kind of fake. Aleah lay against a bank of silk pillows that Scott Group did not stock in its billing code, one wrist raised so the light caught the Cartier bracelet dangling there. She wasn't gasping anymore. She wasn't dying. She was glowing.

"Oh," she said, tilting her head as I walked in with the administrator, "I hope you're not too stressed, Mrs. Scott. Trevor worries about you."

I smiled at her the way I smile at difficult clients. Pleasant. Empty. "That's kind of him." I turned to the administrator, a thin man with a lanyard and tired eyes. "Can you walk me through the billing structure for this suite? I want to make sure it's coded correctly."

He blinked, caught off guard by the calm of it. Aleah's bracelet clinked as she lowered her arm, the honey in her expression curdling for half a second before she smoothed it back into place.

I read the nurses' badges while he talked. Renata. Priya. I filed the names the way I file everything—dated, cross-referenced, useless until it isn't.

Outside, in the corridor, the fluorescent lights hummed the same hum as the parking garage. Trevor was waiting by the elevator, arms crossed, jaw set in the expression he wears when he thinks he's already won.

"You didn't have to come," he said.

"I did." I held up my phone, the wire confirmation still open on the screen. Three million dollars. Emergency medical compensation. "I want it reversed. Every cent. Your parents have a surgical date in six weeks."

His face didn't change right away. That was the part that unsettled me—the pause before the cruelty, like he was deciding which version of himself to use. Then he stepped in close, closer than a hallway conversation calls for, and dropped his voice so low I had to lean toward it to hear him at all.

"You don't get to make demands."

"I'm not making a demand. I'm stating a fact. That money belongs to your father's heart and your mother's kidneys, not to a girl faking cardiac arrest for a Cartier bracelet."

The slap came fast. I didn't see his hand move so much as feel the world tilt sideways, a white flash behind my eyes, my cheek suddenly hot and singing. Down the hall, a nurse froze mid-step, a tray of syringes rattling once in her hands before she caught it.

Trevor straightened his tie. Actually straightened it, like a man composing himself after a difficult phone call rather than a man who'd just struck his wife in a public corridor.

"Hand over CEO authority," he said, "or I'll make sure you leave this marriage with nothing. Not a cent. Not your reputation. Nothing."

I pressed two fingers to my cheek. It throbbed under my hand, but somewhere underneath the pain there was something else, something colder and clearer, like water settling after a stone drops through it. I looked at him for a long moment—long enough that his confidence flickered, just slightly, like he couldn't read what was behind my eyes anymore.

Then I turned and walked away. I didn't say a word. I didn't need to. He would learn what silence like that meant soon enough.

---

Two weeks after I froze the capital flowing into his ventures, the cracks started showing in places Trevor couldn't charm his way past. Concrete didn't care about his tie or his jawline. Concrete needed money, on schedule, and the schedule had gone quiet.

I heard about the investor calls secondhand, the way I hear most things now—through people who still, out of habit, loop me into emails they shouldn't. Two major backers on the Hudson Yards annex wanted answers about projected returns. Simple questions. The kind I used to answer in my sleep, back when I still built every model myself.

Trevor couldn't answer them. He'd never learned to read a P&L statement, not really—he'd learned to nod at the right moments while an assistant briefed him in the elevator. On the call, from what I heard, he stalled with phrases like "we're optimizing the capital stack" and "the fundamentals remain strong," language with no numbers behind it, a suit with no man inside.

Afterward, according to his assistant—who still, out of old loyalty, texts me sometimes—he summoned two senior analysts and demanded a "summary" of the company's financial position. What came back, I later learned, was almost entirely my own work. Models I'd built. Projections I'd stress-tested at midnight over the last three years, repackaged into a slide deck with the Scott Group logo stamped across the top.

He emailed it to the investors himself. Called it his analysis. Took credit, the way he always has, for the architecture of something he never once understood.

I didn't feel triumphant when I heard. I felt something quieter, and far more useful. I opened my ledger and wrote the date, the wire transfer, the slap, the stolen work—each one its own small brick. I was building something now. Not a marriage. A case.
