Chapter 4

Adrian did not eat for three days.

Derek noticed first. The untouched breakfast tray outside the office door. The coffee gone cold in its cup. The dinner reservation canceled without explanation—the first time in Adrian's adult life he had simply failed to appear somewhere he was expected.

On the third night, Derek found him in the dark.

The office was unlit except for the glow of the phone in Adrian's hands. He sat in the chair behind his desk with his shoulders curved forward, staring at the screen. Derek could see it from the doorway: a photograph. Jolene laughing at something off-camera, her hair catching the light, her eyes bright in a way Derek had never seen in person.

Adrian had taken it without her knowing. Some dinner months ago. Maybe a year. Derek didn't remember.

"Sir," Derek said quietly.

Adrian did not look up. His thumbs moved across the screen, scrolling to another photo. Then another. A catalog of moments she had never consented to being captured. Evidence of attention she had never received while she was alive to feel it.

"The divers are suspending the search," Derek continued. "The current's too strong. They're saying—"

"I know what they're saying."

Adrian's voice was flat. Unrecognizable. Derek had worked for this man for eight years. He had seen him negotiate hostile acquisitions, dismantle competitors, absorb bad news with the calm of someone who had never once doubted his capacity to fix what was broken.

This was not that man.

"Sir, you need to eat something."

Adrian's hands tightened on the phone. The screen went dark. He did not move to wake it.

"Get out," he said.

Derek hesitated. Then he stepped back into the hallway and closed the door.

Inside, Adrian sat in the dark for another four hours. He did not cry. He did not move. He simply held the phone in both hands and stared at nothing, the full weight of what he had done settling onto his chest like water, black and cold and rising.

In New York, Jolene woke at 2 AM in a bed that was not hers.

She sat up gasping, her hands fisted in the sheets, her heart slamming against her ribs. The room was unfamiliar. White walls. High ceilings. A window overlooking the city, the lights stretching out in every direction.

Semaj's penthouse. Manhattan. She was in Manhattan.

She pressed her palms to her face and breathed. In. Out. In. The shaking started in her hands and spread up her arms, her shoulders, her chest. Not grief. Not fear. Just the body's honest accounting of what she had asked it to do. Drive off a bridge. Sink into black water. Survive.

She had survived.

The door opened. Semaj stood in the hallway in sweatpants and an old college T-shirt, his hair sticking up on one side. He didn't ask if she was okay. He just crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed.

"You're shaking," he said.

She nodded. She couldn't speak yet.

He pulled her against his chest and held her there while the tremors worked their way through. She didn't cry. She just shook, her fingers twisted in his shirt, while he kept one hand on the back of her head and breathed slowly enough for both of them.

When it passed, she pulled back and wiped her face.

"I'm okay," she said.

He looked at her for a long moment. Then he nodded. "Yeah. You are."

---

In the morning he made coffee.

Black, no sugar. He set it in front of her without asking and sat down across the table with his own cup. The kitchen was full of early light, soft and gold, the kind of light that made everything feel possible.

Jolene wrapped her hands around the mug and breathed in the steam.

"Thank you," she said quietly.

Semaj shook his head. "You don't thank me for this."

They sat in silence for a long time. Outside, the city was waking up. Horns. Voices. The low hum of traffic. It sounded nothing like Los Angeles.

It sounded like safety.

---

That afternoon, Semaj made a call.

Jolene was in the other room, curled on the sofa with a book she wasn't reading. He stood by the window with his phone pressed to his ear, his voice low and careful.

"Nathaniel. It's Semaj."

A pause.

"I need a favor. My sister needs safety. She needs someone who won't make her smaller. I trust you with this."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Does she know I know what she's been through?" Nathaniel's voice was calm. Measured.

"She knows you know enough," Semaj said. "I told her you're a friend. That you're safe. That's all she needs right now."

"And does she want this, or is this for the family?"

Semaj glanced toward the living room. Jolene was staring out the window now, her arms wrapped around her knees.

"She wants a future that doesn't look like her past," Semaj said. "I think you can give her that. If you're willing."

A beat of silence.

"Tuesday evening," Nathaniel said. "There's a place in the West Village. Small. Warm. She won't feel watched."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet," Nathaniel said. "I haven't met her."

Semaj smiled faintly. "You will."

He hung up and stood there for a moment, looking out at the city. Then he turned and walked back into the living room.

Jolene looked up.

"You have a dinner Tuesday," he said. "If you want it."

She studied his face. Then she nodded once.

"Okay," she said.

Semaj sat down beside her. She leaned her head on his shoulder. Outside, the light shifted. The city hummed. And for the first time in five years, Jolene felt the possibility of something that did not require her to bleed for it.
