Chapter 5

The restaurant was small. Warm. Tucked into a West Village side street where the cobblestones still looked old and the streetlights threw soft gold onto brick.

I arrived first. Semaj had offered to come, but I'd said no. If I was doing this—and I was doing this—I needed to walk in alone.

Nathaniel was already at the table.

He stood when I approached. Not a performance. Just the automatic courtesy of someone who'd been raised a certain way and never questioned it. He was tall. Dark hair. Good suit, but not the kind meant to announce itself. His handshake was firm without being a test.

"Jolene," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"Thank you for the invitation."

We sat. A waiter appeared with water and menus and disappeared again. The silence that followed wasn't uncomfortable. It was just silence.

Nathaniel looked at me with calm, unhurried attention. Not assessing. Not cataloging. Just looking.

"Semaj says you've been reading," he said.

"I have."

"Anything good?"

I blinked. It was such an ordinary question. The kind people asked when they actually wanted to know the answer.

"Poetry, mostly," I said. "I'm working through Mary Oliver. Again."

He smiled. "'Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?'"

I felt something shift in my chest. Not panic. Not the old tightening. Just surprise.

"You know her work."

"My mother kept a collection on the nightstand," he said. "I grew up hearing those lines at breakfast."

The waiter returned. We ordered without looking at the menus—he'd clearly been here before, and I trusted his judgment more than my own right now. When the waiter left, Nathaniel leaned back slightly and regarded me with that same steady attention.

"Window or aisle?" he asked.

"What?"

"On long flights. Window or aisle."

I stared at him. "Window."

"Why?"

"I like watching the ground fall away."

He nodded as though I'd said something important. "I'm aisle. I don't like feeling trapped."

"That's fair."

We talked through dinner. He asked what I would do with a completely empty Saturday. I said I'd probably walk until I got lost, then find my way back. He said he'd spend it at a used bookstore in Brooklyn that sold records in the basement. He asked if I preferred coffee or tea in the morning. I said coffee, black. He said the same.

He did not ask about Los Angeles. He did not ask about Adrian. He did not reference my history, my family, or the fact that Semaj had clearly told him enough to know I'd survived something.

He just asked about me. The version of me sitting across from him right now. And he listened to the answers like they mattered.

By the time dessert arrived—something chocolate I didn't remember ordering—I realized my shoulders had dropped. My hands were loose in my lap. The old reflex—the one that made my chest tighten around men I didn't know, the one that turned my breath shallow and my palms cold—hadn't surfaced once.

I was just having dinner with someone I found genuinely interesting.

This, I thought, is what it was supposed to feel like all along.

When the check came, Nathaniel paid without ceremony. We walked outside together. The street was quiet. A few people passing. The sound of a piano drifting from an open window somewhere above.

"Can I drive you home?" he asked.

"Semaj is picking me up. But thank you."

He nodded. Slipped his hands into his pockets. "I'd like to do this again. If you would."

I looked at him for a long moment. He didn't look away. Didn't rush me. Just waited.

"I'd like that," I said.

He smiled. It reached his eyes. "Good."

Semaj's car pulled up to the curb. Nathaniel opened the door for me, waited until I was settled, then stepped back and raised one hand in farewell.

As we pulled away, Semaj glanced over.

"Well?"

I watched the city lights blur past the window. "He asked me what I'm reading."

Semaj's mouth quirked. "And?"

"And he actually wanted to know the answer."

Semaj said nothing. Just reached over and squeezed my hand once.

I leaned my head against the window and closed my eyes. For the first time in longer than I could remember, I felt something unfamiliar and tentative uncurling in my chest.

It felt like hope.

---

Adrian got the report six weeks later.

He was in his office. Derek set the folder on the desk without a word and stepped back. Adrian opened it.

The first page was a society announcement clipped from a Manhattan magazine. The photograph showed Jolene in a simple black dress, her hair loose, her smile unguarded. Nathaniel Harvey stood beside her, his hand resting at the small of her back. They were mid-laugh at something off-camera. The caption read: *Harvey-Wallace Engagement Announced*.

Adrian stared at the photograph.

He did not move. Did not blink. Just stared at the image of a woman he had believed was dead, alive and laughing in another man's arms.

Then he stood. Took his jacket from the back of the chair. His voice, when he spoke, was very quiet.

"Have the jet ready in an hour."

Derek hesitated. "Sir—"

"One hour, Derek."

Derek nodded and left.

Adrian stood alone in the office, the photograph still open on the desk. He looked at it one more time. Then he walked out and did not look back.

---

The restaurant was upscale. Discreet. The kind of place where privacy was purchased along with the meal.

I was seated with Nathaniel, Semaj, and two of Nathaniel's associates—something about a development project in Brooklyn. The conversation was easy. I was half-listening, my attention drifting, when the air in the room shifted.

I looked up.

Adrian was crossing the dining room in four strides.

He stopped in front of our table. His face was pale. His eyes locked on mine with an intensity that would have pinned me to the chair a year ago.

Now I just looked at him.

"You're alive," he said. His voice was raw. "You're coming back with me."

I set down my water glass. Folded my hands in my lap. Looked at him with the polite, distant courtesy I might show a stranger who'd mistaken me for someone else.

"I think you have the wrong table," I said.

Semaj's chair scraped back. He was on his feet before Adrian could respond, his hand closing around Adrian's arm with the calm efficiency of someone removing an obstruction.

"Let's go," Semaj said quietly.

Adrian tried to pull free. "Jolene—"

"She's done talking to you," Semaj said. He walked Adrian toward the door. Adrian resisted for half a second, then let himself be moved.

Nathaniel had not risen from his seat. He sat perfectly still, his hands resting on the table, his gaze tracking Adrian through the glass as Semaj deposited him on the sidewalk outside.

Adrian turned back toward the window. His eyes found mine one last time.

Nathaniel leaned forward slightly. His voice was conversational. Calm. But it carried.

"Touch her again," he said, "and I'll dismantle everything your family has built—starting with you."

Adrian stared at him. Then at me. I did not look away. I did not flinch.

I simply turned back to the table and picked up my fork.

When I glanced up again, Adrian was gone.
