Now he strolls back into her life—casual, affectionate, blind to the wounds he left. His homecoming comes with a cruel twist: she must wait on the woman who took her place. Each polite smile masks a simmering rage, each question about the past tightens a noose around his comfortable new world. Diana holds secrets that could unravel him, and tonight, the obedient wife is done. The mystery isn't why he left—it's what she'll do now that he's home.

My Husband Forced Me to Serve His Mistress at Dinner Chapter 1

Julien came home on a Tuesday.

I heard the front door at 7:12. I heard his voice before I saw him.

"Diana! Darling, I'm home!"

He said it like he'd been gone for a weekend. Like he'd flown to Boston for a meeting and made it back for dinner. Not five years. Not Paris. Not the night I lay on a hospital floor in my own blood, calling his number again and again.

I closed the ledger on my desk. I didn't get up right away.

From the study, I heard heels on the marble. Two sets of steps. His were heavy and sure. Hers were light and careful, like someone trying not to break anything she planned to own.

"Diana?" he called again. A little less warm this time.

The house was spotless. I kept it that way. But there were no flowers in the hall. No roast in the oven. No candles. Nothing that said welcome back. I wanted him to notice that first.

I stood, smoothed my black jacket, and picked up the manila folder.

He was in the kitchen when I walked in. Julien Griffin. Heir to the Griffin real estate empire. He looked tan and rested. His Italian suit was open at the collar. His hair was slicked back, the same way it was on our wedding day. An overnight bag sat at his feet.

Behind him stood a slim woman in pale pink silk. Estrella Simmons. I knew her face from photos. Paris cafés. Swiss ski lodges. Always leaning on his arm like she might faint.

"There she is," Julien said. He spread his hands and smiled. "My sweet Diana."

I didn't smile back. I didn't look at her. I walked to the counter, opened the folder, and set the papers in front of him. My attorney's card was clipped to the top.

"Divorce agreement," I said. "Everything is filled out. You only need to sign."

His smile stuck. Then it slipped.

"What is this?"

"It's been ready for two years. I was waiting for you to come home."

He laughed. He ran both hands through his hair. "Diana. Come on. I just walked in the door."

"I know. I heard."

He looked at me then. Really looked. At the suit. At my face. I think he expected tears. Or yelling. Five years ago, he would have gotten both. I would have cried, asked where he'd been, and then thanked him for coming back.

Now I just waited. The way I wait for a family that shows up late to a viewing. Calm. Patient. Nothing left to rush.

Julien picked up the papers and tore them in half. The sound was loud in the quiet kitchen.

"We are not doing this," he said. "We're adults. We'll work through it like adults." He tossed the halves on the counter. "I know you're hurt. But I made sacrifices too. You think Paris was easy for me?"

Behind him, Estrella made a small sound. She pulled a lace handkerchief from her clutch and pressed it under her eyes. I smelled lavender. Her eyes were completely dry.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered. "I never wanted to cause trouble."

"You're not trouble," Julien said quickly. He touched her shoulder, then turned back to me. "Estrella's still recovering. She'll stay in the guest suite. Temporarily."

Temporarily. He said it like a favor.

I remembered our wedding night. He held my face in his hands. "You'll never have to worry about anything," he said. "I chose you. I'll keep choosing you."

I glanced at Estrella's hand. Her right index finger was tapping her clutch. Fast. Impatient. Her face stayed soft and sad.

I gathered the torn halves. I lined up the edges. I put them back in the folder and closed it.

"I'll have a new copy printed by morning," I said.

"Diana—"

I walked past him. Up the stairs. I closed my bedroom door. It made a soft click. That was all.

I didn't cry. I sat on the bed and looked at my hands. The nails were short and clean. The palms were rough and hard. Five years of oak caskets and steel tables will do that.

He used to say I'd never have to lift a finger.

Rachel Vance's office sat thirty floors above Midtown. Morning sun hit the glass and made everything too bright.

She slid a fresh folder across her desk. "New copy. Notarized. He can tear it. Paper's cheap."

"He will."

"Let him." Rachel leaned back. She used to be a prosecutor. She smiled like someone who'd already read the ending. "Where do you want it served?"

"Griffin Enterprises has a board meeting Thursday. Ten a.m."

Her eyebrow went up. "In front of the board."

"In front of everyone."

"That's not just legal pressure. That's a public hit. His investors will talk."

"I know."

She studied me for a second. Then she nodded and made a note. "Done. It's airtight. He can drag it out. He can't stop it."

I stood to leave. She raised one finger.

"One more thing." She pulled a thin document from her drawer. "Eleanor Griffin's advance directive. Signed three years ago. Julien was still in Europe."

I took it. I knew the signature. Sharp and slanted, like her voice.

"She named Bradley Funeral Services," Rachel said. "Sole memorial provider. It's filed and locked. Nobody in that family can override it."

I read the line twice. My mother-in-law had never said one kind word to me. She called my father's business morbid. She left me off every guest list in Manhattan.

And yet.

"How's her heart?" Rachel asked.

Far below, a siren wailed. Thin. Then gone.

"Bad," I said. I slipped the document into my bag. "But she's Julien's mother. Not my problem anymore."

I was wrong about that. I just didn't know it yet.
