Chapter 3

That night I burned the letter.

I'd been writing it for three weeks. Draft after draft, each one longer than the last, trying to find words that would make him understand what he'd done. What it felt like to be used. To be convenient. To watch him adjust another woman's blanket with hands that had never touched me that gently.

But there was nothing left to say. He wouldn't understand because he'd never wanted to. And I didn't need him to anymore.

I held the pages over the kitchen sink and watched them curl into ash. The smoke alarm didn't go off. I'd removed the battery two days ago.

Then I called Semaj.

"Tomorrow night," I said. "I-10 overpass. Have someone at the drainage point near the Sixth Street bridge at eleven."

Silence on the other end. Two seconds. Long enough for him to understand everything I wasn't saying.

"I'll be there myself," he said.

I hung up. Transferred the last account—the small one Adrian had never known existed, the one my mother set up when I turned eighteen. Packed nothing. Everything that mattered was already gone.

I looked around the house one last time. Five years of my life in these rooms. I felt nothing.

I picked up my keys and left.

---

The freeway was empty at 10:40 PM.

I took the on-ramp at Alameda, merged into the center lane, and accelerated to exactly sixty-five. The overpass stretched ahead, lit orange under the sodium lights. Beyond it, darkness. The river below was a black ribbon cutting through the city.

I'd calculated this three times. Speed. Angle. Entry point. Marco had replaced the brake lines, but I wasn't going to need brakes.

My hands were steady on the wheel. My breath was even. I hummed under my breath—that same song I couldn't place, the one that had been following me for days.

At 10:47, I cut the wheel hard right.

The car hit the barrier at forty degrees. Metal screamed. The airbag exploded into my chest. Glass shattered. For one weightless second I was airborne, the city spinning below me in a smear of gold and black.

Then the river came up to meet me.

The impact punched the air from my lungs. Water poured through the broken windows, cold and black and faster than I'd expected. I fumbled for the seatbelt. My fingers were numb. The car was sinking nose-first, tilting forward, the dashboard filling with water.

I got the belt loose. Shoved the door. It wouldn't move. The pressure. I braced my feet against the center console and pushed with everything I had.

The door gave.

I kicked free of the car and swam. Up. I thought it was up. The water was black in every direction. My lungs burned. My coat dragged at my shoulders. I clawed toward what I hoped was the surface.

I broke through gasping.

The current pulled me downstream. I didn't fight it. I let it carry me, treading just enough to keep my head above water, until the lights of the Sixth Street bridge came into view.

I dragged myself onto the concrete embankment at 11:34.

Semaj was already there.

He didn't say a word. Just pulled me up, wrapped a blanket around my shoulders, and walked me to the car. The engine was running. The heat was on. There was a duffel bag in the back seat—the one I'd packed three weeks ago and left in his apartment. Dry clothes. My mother's photograph. My grandmother's ring. My passport.

I peeled off my soaking coat and changed in the back seat while he drove. North. Away from the city. Away from Adrian. Away from everything.

I didn't look back.

---

Adrian got the call at midnight.

I know because Semaj's contact in the LAPD sent him the report later. Security arrived at the overpass at 12:14 AM. They found the barrier destroyed. Skid marks. Broken glass scattered across two lanes. And far below, in the black water, the car.

Adrian ordered divers immediately.

They worked through the night. Floodlights turned the river white. I pictured him standing on the bank in his suit jacket, hands in his pockets, watching them surface again and again with nothing.

They recovered my purse at 3 AM. Waterlogged, the leather split down the seam. My phone at 4:30, the screen shattered. Fragments of the steering column. One shoe—the left one, the heel snapped clean off.

They did not find a body.

By dawn, the divers were exhausted. The current was too strong. The visibility too poor. The lead diver surfaced one last time and shook his head.

Adrian stood there until the sun came up.

Semaj's contact said he didn't move for hours. Just stood on the bank staring at the water, his face blank, his hands clenched at his sides. When his security team finally convinced him to leave, he walked to his car like a man who'd forgotten how his legs worked.

Something behind his eyes had cracked.

I was three hundred miles away by then, wrapped in a blanket in the passenger seat of Semaj's car, watching the desert scroll past in shades of gray and gold.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in five years, I slept without dreaming.
