My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Daughter

8.4 / 10.0
From my bench in the Southern District of New York, I stare down at Celeste Garza—cream-clad, head bowed, the woman my husband Gabriel has loved in secret for years. The child her luxury SUV struck was our five-year-old, Rosalina. My robes conceal a mother's trembling; the gallery sees only a judge. None suspect the defendant is family, or that Gabriel chose his mistress over our daughter. Gripping the mahogany, I brace for what comes next.

My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Daughter Chapter 1

The courtroom was dead quiet.

I sat high above them all at the heavy oak bench of the Southern District of New York. My black robes hid the way my body shook. Down at the defense table, Celeste Garza sat with her head bowed. She wore a soft cream knit sweater. She looked small, delicate, and entirely helpless.

No one in the crowded gallery knew that Celeste was my husband’s sister-in-law. No one knew she was the woman Gabriel had loved in secret for years.

And no one knew that the child she had hit with her luxury SUV was my five-year-old daughter, Rosalina.

I gripped the edge of the polished mahogany wood. My knuckles turned stark white.

"Please be seated," I said.

My voice sounded steady, but inside, I was already bleeding out.

My mind pulled me straight back to midnight.

The phone had buzzed on my nightstand. It was a video call from Gabriel. When I answered, I didn't see his face. I saw the cold, windy roof of a Manhattan high-rise.

Two men in dark coats held Rosalina by her arms over the sheer drop. Her little face was pale, wrapped in white surgical bandages from the crash. She was crying so hard she was choking on her own tears.

"Mommy!" her tiny voice crackled through the speaker. "Mommy, it’s cold!"

Then Gabriel stepped into the frame. His tailored coat was buttoned tight. His handsome face was completely blank.

"Acquit Celeste tomorrow, Julianna," he said. His voice was flat, like he was negotiating a property contract. "If you convict her, Rosalina falls."

"Gabriel, she's your daughter!" I screamed at the screen. I dropped to my knees on the hardwood floor. "Please, don't do this! Take me instead. Kill me! Just bring her inside!"

"Not guilty, Julianna. That is the only verdict."

"Gabriel—"

The screen went black. He cut the call.

Now, twelve hours later, I looked down at Celeste. She dabbed at a dry eye with a lace handkerchief. Beside her, her lawyer looked smug.

My hands trembled so badly under the wide silk sleeves that I had to press my palms against the bench. The law had been my entire life. I had built my career on honor, truth, and justice. My parents had died because rich people twisted the rules, and I had sworn I would never let corruption touch my court.

None of that mattered now. Only Rosalina mattered.

"In the matter of the State versus Celeste Garza," I said. My voice was a dry rasp. Every word tasted like ash. "On the charge of vehicular negligence... the court finds the defendant not guilty."

The wooden gavel came down with a sharp, sickening crack.

Whispers broke out across the gallery like a wave. The prosecutor stared up at me, his mouth slightly open in utter disbelief. Reporters scribbled frantically in their notebooks. Celeste gave a soft, theatrical sob of relief.

I didn't wait for the bailiff to dismiss the room. I stood up and pushed my chair back. I descended the bench, pushed through the heavy side door, and broke into a dead sprint.

I ran down the private back stairs. I ran across the cold concrete of the parking garage, my black robes billowing behind me like a shroud.

I sped all the way to Mount Sinai Hospital, running red lights, my heart pounding against my ribs.

I took the stairs three at a time up to Room 412.

"Rosie?" I gasped, throwing the door open. "Rosie, Mommy’s here!"

The room was silent.

The bed was stripped. The white mattress was bare. The monitors were turned off, their screens black.

I spun around. In the hallway, Diane Foster, the night nurse, stood holding a clipboard. When our eyes met, she flinched and looked down at the floor immediately.

"Where is she?" I demanded, grabbing Diane's arm. My fingers dug into her scrub top. "Where is my daughter?"

A doctor stepped out from an office down the hall. His face was grim and exhausted.

"Judge Stewart," he said softly. "You need to sit down."

"Where is Rosalina?" I screamed.

"Mr. Montgomery left three hours ago," the doctor said, his voice hesitant. "He received an emergency call from Mrs. Garza. Her son Angelo had developed a fever. Mr. Montgomery left to take medicine to their penthouse."

I stared at him. The air left my lungs.

"A fever?" I whispered. "Gabriel left Rosie alone for a fever?"

"She was heavily medicated after her leg surgery," the doctor continued, looking at his shoes. "She woke up disoriented. The nurses were busy with a code down the hall. Rosalina was calling for you. She got out of bed. She pushed through a propped-open maintenance door onto the rooftop terrace."

He paused. He swallowed hard.

"She fell four stories, Judge Stewart. She was dead before the paramedics reached her."

The world went mute.

My ears rang with a high, deafening whine. I didn't cry. I didn't breathe. I walked past the doctor, my legs moving on instinct. Down in the emergency wing, behind a faded blue curtain, a small gurney waited.

A white sheet covered the tiny shape.

I pulled the sheet back.

Rosalina looked like she was sleeping, except for the terrible purple bruising along her forehead and cheek. Her dark curls were still tangled.

I fell to my knees. I pulled her small, broken body against my chest and buried my face into her hair. It was cold. She smelled like antiseptic and baby soap, but the warmth was gone.

I opened my mouth to scream.

No sound came out. The agony was so massive it tore through my throat in total silence. A suffocating void consumed me. In the hallway outside, two passing nurses stopped dead in their tracks, staring into the room with wide, terrified eyes.

I grabbed Rosalina's small, limp hand and held it against my cheek.

After a long time, a young resident stepped inside. He touched my shoulder gently. "Ma'am... you have to let go now. We have to prepare her."

"No," I whispered.

I didn't let go for another hour.
