My Groom Humiliated Me for His Mistress Chapter 1

The night of my engagement party, Manhattan glittered below us like spilled diamonds.

Three hundred guests filled the rooftop of the Aurelia. Champagne glasses clinked. A string quartet played beside the terrace pool, and the water glowed a soft, perfect blue.

Adrian Wells stood next to me in a charcoal three-piece suit. Seven years ago, he wore a thrift-store blazer with a torn lining. Tonight he looked like the man on the magazine covers. The visionary. The philanthropist. The CEO of Wells & Carter Group.

He tapped his glass. The crowd went quiet.

"Seven years ago, we slept on a mattress on the floor of a Brooklyn studio," he said. His voice carried easily. "The heat broke every January. We split one coffee a day. And this woman never once doubted me." He turned to me. "Emilia, everything I built, I built for you."

People sighed. Someone whistled.

He laced his fingers through mine. His hand was warm. I let myself believe it. Just for a moment.

My thumb found the inside of my left ring finger. A soda can tab used to sit there. He bent it into a circle on our fire escape and promised me the world. Now there was a diamond in its place. Heavy. Cold.

Then I heard the splash.

A woman screamed. I turned. Harlow Mendoza was in the pool. Her pale pink slip dress floated around her like petals. She was a fellow from our mentorship program. Twenty-three. Adrian's personal project. She flailed and gasped in water that barely reached her chest.

Adrian dropped my hand.

He didn't look at me. He vaulted over a low hedge, shoved past a waiter, and dove in. Suit, watch, everything.

The quartet stopped.

He came up with Harlow pressed against his chest. She clung to his neck, coughing, wet hair stuck to her cheek. She looked so small. So helpless. Over his shoulder, her eyes found mine.

She wasn't scared. She was watching.

Adrian carried her through the crowd. He walked right past me. Water dripped from his sleeve onto my ivory heels. He never glanced back.

Phones rose all around me. Little screens. Little red dots. By morning, that picture would be everywhere.

I stood there with my empty hand at my side, and I smiled. I still don't know how.

---

Back at our penthouse on Central Park West, I didn't take off my dress. I sat on the arm of the sofa and waited.

He came in after one. Dry shirt. Someone had brought him a fresh one.

"Is she okay?" I asked.

"She's fine. Just shaken." He fiddled with his cufflink. "Em, about tonight—"

"I want to break off the engagement."

His fingers stopped on the cufflink.

"You're upset," he said softly.

"I'm clear."

He crossed the room and knelt in front of me. He cupped my face in both hands. His eyes went wide and wet, like a hurt boy's. "She's a kid from the program. She can't swim. What was I supposed to do? Let her drown in front of the press?"

"The water was four feet deep, Adrian."

"She panicked." His thumbs stroked my cheeks. "Seven years, Em. You think I'd throw that away for an intern?"

I knew this face. I had trusted it through every bad loan and every sleepless night. My chest ached. I was so tired.

"We'll talk tomorrow," I said.

He kissed my forehead. "PR is going crazy. I'll handle it from the loft so I don't keep you up. Get some sleep, baby."

The elevator doors closed behind him.

---

I didn't sleep.

At 3:12 a.m., my phone buzzed. Vanessa Cole. Her husband sat on our board, and their building faced Adrian's downtown loft.

*Sorry to bother you. Isn't this Adrian?*

A photo. Adrian guiding Harlow into his lobby. His jacket around her shoulders. Her pink dress still dark and damp at the hem.

Another buzz.

*Our doorman knows his. Says he's keeping her overnight. To look after her.*

I set the phone face down on the glass table.

The penthouse was dark. Only the city lit the room, cold and silver. I didn't cry. I didn't throw anything. I sat very still and let myself think, really think, for the first time in seven years.

Who read every contract? Me.

Who built every financial model? Me.

Who signed where Adrian told me to sign, without asking why?

Also me.

Somewhere deep inside, something cold began to turn. Slow. Steady. Like an engine waking up.

---

At seven, I made a call.

"Julian Hayes."

"This is Emilia Carter. I need a full audit. Every joint venture, every contract, every filing I share with Adrian Wells."

A short pause. "How quiet?"

"He can't know."

"Is this a divorce, Ms. Carter?"

"We're not married. This is due diligence."

"Due diligence doesn't usually call at seven a.m."

"Then bill me extra."

He almost laughed. Almost. "I'll need access to everything. Personal records too, if they touch company money."

"You'll have it by noon."

"One more thing." His voice dropped. "When people ask me to look, they usually find something they wish they hadn't."

I traced the inside of my ring finger. The diamond caught the morning light.

"Then find it," I said.
