After My Husband Buried Me for His Mistress Chapter 1

The air outside the prison tasted like exhaust and old asphalt. I stood on the curb in clothes that didn't belong to me—gray cotton shirt, loose pants, shoes that rubbed blisters on my heels. Two years. Seven hundred and thirty days. I'd counted every single one.

A black sedan idled at the gate. The driver didn't look at me when I climbed in. He just pulled onto the highway and left the prison shrinking in the rearview mirror.

I reached for my phone. It felt strange in my hand. Too light. Too smooth. I'd forgotten what it was like to hold something that connected to the outside world.

The first notification made my chest tight. A news clip. Vera Lund—my protégée, the young agent I'd trained, the woman whose career I'd saved when she botched an interrogation in her first year—sitting across from a morning show host. Her makeup was perfect. Her suit was navy blue. She looked so polished.

"Were you surprised by Journey Clark's conviction?" the host asked.

Vera shook her head slowly. "Not really. Looking back, there were always signs. She was obsessive. Tunnel vision. I think we all just missed it."

I stopped the video. My hands were shaking.

I scrolled through the rest. My case files had been reassigned. The behavioral analysis unit had a new lead profiler. My name had been removed from commendations. Awards I'd won were now listed as "FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit, 2019" with no individual credit. They'd erased me like I was a typo.

I put the phone down and stared out the window. Trees blurred past. Exit signs. Billboards advertising things I didn't care about. The world had kept moving. It didn't wait for me. It didn't even notice I was gone.

Twenty minutes later, we pulled up to my building. The Park Avenue penthouse. Forty-third floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows. I used to stand at those windows with coffee in the morning and watch the city wake up.

I got out of the car. Walked to the lobby doors. Pressed my key fob against the reader.

Nothing.

I tried again. The red light blinked. Access denied.

Through the glass, I could see inside. The lobby was the same. Marble floors. Modern furniture. The elevator bank in the back. And past the front desk, through the open door to the mail room, I saw her.

Rosie Snyder.

She was wearing my cashmere coat. The cream one I'd bought in London three years ago. It fit her perfectly. She was arranging white lilies in a vase, humming something I couldn't hear through the glass. Behind her, Kylian's charcoal jacket hung over the armchair. My favorite chair. The one I used to curl up in with case files and tea.

I looked past her to the mantle.

My breath stopped.

The photograph. My parents on their wedding day. My father in his Bureau dress uniform. My mother laughing, flowers in her hair. I'd carried that photo everywhere. It had been in my bag the day they arrested me. I thought it was in evidence storage.

But there it was. Propped on the mantle like decoration. Like vintage art.

Rosie stepped back, tilted her head, adjusted the frame half an inch to the left.

I stood there on the street. Gaunt. Scarred. Wearing prison clothes. Locked out of my own life.

She turned and walked out of view. The lilies stayed on the table. My coat stayed on her shoulders. My father's face stayed on the mantle.

I stepped back from the glass. Turned. Walked to the curb. The sedan was still there. The driver looked at me in the rearview mirror.

"Motel," I said. "Cheapest one you know."

He drove me to a place off the highway. Forty dollars a night. Peeling paint. Neon sign with two letters burned out. I paid cash. Took the key. Walked up the outdoor stairs to room twelve.

The room smelled like cigarettes and mildew. The bedspread had stains I didn't want to identify. I sat on the edge of the mattress and opened my phone again.

Gerardo Snyder's name pulled up a dozen recent articles. Society pages. Charity galas. And one from last month: *Beloved Philanthropist Gerardo Snyder Battles Terminal Heart Condition*.

There was a photo. He was standing on a terrace. Ocean in the background. Hamptons estate. He looked healthy. Tan. Smiling.

Terminal.

Unfit for trial.

My father's killer was eating grilled fish and drinking wine on a terrace while I slept in a forty-dollar motel room.

I set the phone down. Stared at the wall. The crack in the plaster ran from the ceiling to the window frame. I traced it with my eyes. Followed it down. Down. Down.

Then I picked up the phone again.

I dialed a number I'd memorized in prison. A number I'd gotten from a contact who owed me a favor. A number that didn't exist in any directory.

It rang three times.

"Yes." The voice was low. Controlled. British accent.

Caspian Cole.

"I have a deal for you," I said.

Silence.

"I know you're looking for someone," I continued. "Your father's killer. Fifteen years of searching. You need a profiler. I'm the best you'll ever find."

"And what do you need?" His tone didn't change. No curiosity. Just calculation.

"Resources. Connections. Access." I paused. "I need to destroy some people."

Another silence. Longer this time.

"How soon can you start?" he asked.

"Now."

"Done."

The line went dead.

I sat there in the motel room. The neon sign outside flickered. Red. Dark. Red. Dark.

I opened a new message thread. Typed carefully.

*Mr. Armstrong's attorney: I would like to come home. I want to try again. Please let Kylian know I'm ready to be his wife.*

I read it twice. Made sure every word sounded broken. Submissive. Defeated.

Then I hit send.

The reply came in four minutes.

*Mr. Armstrong is willing to give you another chance. A car will pick you up tomorrow at nine.*

I put the phone down. Lay back on the stained bedspread. Stared at the ceiling.

I didn't feel anything. Not anger. Not fear. Not even hate.

Just a cold, clear certainty.

They thought they'd buried me.

They had no idea what they'd actually done.

They'd set me free.
