My Fiancé Humiliated Me, So I Married His Brother

The Hart penthouse breathes old money—polished wood, aged wine, a fortune three generations deep that never needs to announce itself. I walk in beside Julian, my grandmother's emerald pendant resting against my collarbone, worn on purpose so Reuben Hart will see the one link to the woman who raised me. Then Julian humiliates me in front of everyone. So I marry his brother. Now the Hart dynasty is at war, and the man who threw me away is learning exactly what he lost.

Chapter 2

I went back to Jensen's building three nights in a row.

The first night, I arrived at eleven. He was waiting in his study. Same desk. Same cold light from the lamp. He gestured to the chair across from him.

"Sit."

I sat.

He slid a single sheet of paper across the desk. "Your proposal. In writing."

I read it. The language was precise. Clinical. A marriage of legal convenience. No cohabitation required. Separate finances. Full autonomy over personal affairs. Dissolution terms clearly defined.

"You wrote this fast," I said.

His eyes didn't leave my face. "I had time to think about it."

I picked up the pen he'd placed beside the paper. "I have conditions."

"I assumed you would."

I wrote them in the margin. No public displays of affection unless strategically necessary. No interference in my academic pursuits. No questions about my past with Julian.

Jensen read what I'd written. His expression didn't change.

"Two conditions of my own," he said.

I waited.

"You don't contact Julian directly. Not calls. Not texts. Nothing."

"Done."

"And if you're in danger — any kind of danger — you tell me immediately."

I hesitated. "That's vague."

"It's non-negotiable."

I studied his face. The hard line of his jaw. The wheelchair positioned precisely behind the desk. The way his fingers rested flat against the wood, controlled and still.

"Fine," I said.

He pulled out a second document. Thicker. Legal letterhead. "Standard prenuptial agreement. My lawyers prepared it this afternoon. Read it carefully."

I read every word. It was fair. More than fair. Almost generous. I signed on the last page.

Jensen signed below my name. His handwriting was sharp and efficient.

"We'll marry in two weeks," he said. "Private ceremony. Hart family estate in the Hamptons. Immediate family only."

"Julian will—"

"Julian will be in the city. At The Plaza. Expecting you."

I blinked. "You already planned this."

"I planned for multiple scenarios." He closed the folder. "This was always the most likely."

I didn't know what to say to that. I stood. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet."

I left before he could explain what he meant.

The second night, I brought questions. Logistics. What would we tell people. How we'd handle the press. Where I'd live.

Jensen answered everything with the same calm precision. We'd tell people the truth — a version of it. That we'd grown close over recent months. That the connection was unexpected but genuine. The press would speculate. Let them.

"You'll keep your apartment," he said. "Use it whenever you want. But you'll have rooms here. For appearances."

"Separate rooms."

"Of course."

I looked around his study. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Dark wood. A telescope by the window. "You read a lot."

"Yes."

"What kind of books?"

He wheeled back slightly. Gestured to a shelf on the left. "Science. History. Philosophy."

I walked over. Ran my fingers along the spines. Stopped.

*Wonderful Life* by Stephen Jay Gould. First edition.

I pulled it out carefully. The dust jacket was pristine. "You have this."

"I do."

"Why?"

"Because it's brilliant."

I turned. He was watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

"I've read this twelve times," I said quietly.

"I know."

Something shifted in my chest. Small. Unfamiliar. I put the book back. "I should go."

He didn't argue.

The third night, I didn't plan to come at all. But my apartment felt too empty. Too quiet. I drove across the city without deciding to.

Jensen opened the door himself this time. No assistant. No housekeeper.

"You're early," he said.

"I wasn't planning to come."

"But you did."

I stepped inside. He closed the door. We stood in the hallway. The silence stretched.

"Are you afraid of him?" Jensen asked.

I didn't pretend not to understand. "No."

"Then what are you afraid of?"

I met his eyes. "That this won't work. That I'll still be trapped. Just in a different cage."

He moved closer. The wheelchair made no sound on the hardwood. "This isn't a cage, Elora. It's a door. What you do with it is your choice."

I believed him. I don't know why. But I did.

Two days later, Julian called. I let it ring. He called again. And again. On the fourth call, I answered.

"Where have you been?" His voice was sharp. "The wedding coordinator needs final numbers. You're not returning anyone's calls."

"I've been busy."

"Busy with what?"

I looked at the contract on my kitchen table. Jensen's signature next to mine.

"Julian," I said quietly. "We need to talk."

The line went silent.

Then: "Talk about what?"

I closed my eyes. "Not over the phone. Meet me tomorrow. The café on Fifth. Two o'clock."

"Elora—"

I hung up.

That night, I went to the fitting one last time. The seamstresses had repaired the gown. It hung on the mannequin like a ghost.

Laylah was there. Of course she was.

She smiled when I walked in. Sweet. Innocent. "Elora. I'm so glad you came. Julian wanted me to help finalize the details."

I looked at her neck. My grandmother's emerald pendant rested against her collarbone.

Something inside me went very still. Very cold.

"That's a beautiful necklace," I said.

Her hand flew to it. "Oh. Julian gave it to me. For the charity auction. I told him I'd return it after, but he insisted—"

"It's not his to give."

Her smile faltered. "What?"

Julian appeared in the doorway. "Elora. You're late."

I turned to him. "I want the pendant back."

His expression hardened. "We've been over this. Laylah needs it. You're being selfish."

"It belonged to my grandmother."

"And now it's serving a good cause. Stop being dramatic."

I looked at Laylah. At the pendant. At Julian's hand on her shoulder.

Then I looked at the wedding dress.

"Take it off," Julian said suddenly.

I blinked. "What?"

"The dress. Take it off. You don't deserve to wear white."

The seamstresses froze. One of them made a small sound.

Julian stepped forward. "I said take it off."

I didn't move.

He reached for the zipper. I stepped back. His eyes flashed. "You're embarrassing yourself. Again."

I looked at the seamstresses. At Laylah's wide, false eyes. At the pendant gleaming against her throat.

Then I unzipped the dress myself. Let it pool at my feet. Stood there in my slip in the cold fitting room.

Julian's jaw tightened. "Get dressed. We'll talk about this later."

I picked up my clothes. Walked out.

I drove home in my slip and coat. Sat in my apartment in the dark.

Then I called Jensen.

He answered on the first ring.

"It happened again," I said. My voice was flat. Empty.

Silence.

I told him everything. The pendant. The dress. The seamstresses watching.

When I finished, the silence stretched long. Then Jensen's voice came through the line. Low. Controlled. But something underneath it made my skin prickle.

"It won't happen again."

I pressed my thumb against my bare collarbone. "How can you promise that?"

"Because in two weeks, you'll be my wife. And no one touches what's mine."

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in years, I felt something that wasn't pain.

I felt safe.
