My Fiancé Humiliated Me, So I Married His Brother

The Hart penthouse breathes old money—polished wood, aged wine, a fortune three generations deep that never needs to announce itself. I walk in beside Julian, my grandmother's emerald pendant resting against my collarbone, worn on purpose so Reuben Hart will see the one link to the woman who raised me. Then Julian humiliates me in front of everyone. So I marry his brother. Now the Hart dynasty is at war, and the man who threw me away is learning exactly what he lost.

Chapter 3

The call came at seven in the morning.

Julian's voice was cold. Clipped. "Pack a bag. You're leaving for a few days."

I sat up in bed. "Leaving where?"

"Montana. Victor Slade's property. You need time to think about what you've done."

My chest tightened. "What I've done?"

"Don't play stupid, Elora. Laylah's in the hospital. She lost the baby."

The room tilted. "What baby?"

"Our baby." His voice cracked. "She was pregnant. And you—" He stopped. Breathed hard. "Witnesses saw you follow her into the bathroom at Marea. Saw you grab her. She fell, Elora. She's devastated."

I pressed my palm flat against the mattress. "Julian, I haven't seen Laylah in two weeks. I wasn't at Marea. I was at the museum all afternoon. There are records—"

"Stop lying." The words hit like a slap. "A car will pick you up in an hour. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

The line went dead.

I sat there holding my phone. My hands were steady. That was the strange part. My hands were completely steady.

I packed a small bag. Jeans. Sweaters. My copy of *Wonderful Life*. I didn't know what else to bring for a punishment I didn't understand.

The car arrived exactly on time. Black sedan. Silent driver. We drove to Teterboro. Private plane. I'd flown on Hart family jets before, but never alone. Never like this.

The flight took four hours. I stared out the window at clouds that looked like glaciers. Tried calling Julian twice. Both calls went straight to voicemail.

We landed on a small airstrip surrounded by nothing. Mountains in the distance. Gray sky pressing down. A truck waited on the tarmac.

The driver was a woman in her fifties. Weathered face. Hard eyes. She looked me over once and said, "You're the city girl."

I didn't answer.

We drove forty minutes on dirt roads. The farmhouse appeared suddenly — low and dark against the hills. Smoke rose from the chimney. Chickens scattered as we pulled up.

The woman cut the engine. "Mr. Hart says you're here to learn some humility. I'm Mrs. Kowalski. You'll do what I tell you. No complaints."

She got out.

I followed.

The room she showed me was bare. Single bed. Thin blanket. A window that looked out at frozen fields. No heat except what drifted up from the wood stove downstairs.

"Dinner's at six," Mrs. Kowalski said. "You'll earn it."

She handed me work gloves and a coat that smelled like livestock.

The first day, I mucked stalls. My hands blistered through the gloves. The cold bit through my jeans. Mrs. Kowalski watched from the barn door, arms crossed.

"Faster," she said. "Spoiled girls work twice as hard here."

I didn't argue. Didn't explain. I shoveled manure until my shoulders screamed.

Dinner was thin soup and bread. I ate alone at a small table in the kitchen. Mrs. Kowalski sat across the room, knitting, watching me with something like satisfaction.

That night I tried calling Julian again. No answer. I texted: *Please talk to me. I didn't do what she said.*

The message showed delivered. Never read.

The second day was worse. Mrs. Kowalski woke me at five. Sent me out to chop firewood in the dark. My hands were already raw. The axe handle tore the blisters open. Blood mixed with splinters.

"You think you're special," Mrs. Kowalski said, appearing behind me. "Hurting that poor girl. She could've died, you know. The baby did."

I stopped mid-swing. "I didn't hurt anyone."

"That's what they all say."

She walked away.

I stood there holding the axe. My breath made clouds in the frozen air. I understood then. Julian hadn't sent me here to cool off. He'd sent me here to be broken.

I chopped wood until my arms went numb.

That night, I called again. Voicemail. I didn't leave a message.

The third day, Mrs. Kowalski sent me to repair a fence in the north pasture. The wire cut my palms. My fingers were too cold to grip the pliers properly. I worked for six hours.

When I came back, she looked at the fence and shook her head. "Sloppy. Do it again tomorrow."

I climbed the stairs to my room. Sat on the bed. Stared at my phone.

Julian's contact photo stared back. The two of us at his cousin's wedding. His arm around my shoulders. My smile wide and real.

I deleted the photo.

Then I opened my messages. Scrolled past Julian's name. Found Jensen's number.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

I thought about the emerald pendant. The wine-stained dress. The seamstresses' faces. Julian's voice: *You don't deserve to wear white.*

I thought about this room. This cold. This punishment for a crime I didn't commit.

I typed four words.

*Move the timeline up.*

I hit send before I could change my mind.

Sixty seconds later, my phone buzzed.

Jensen's reply was one word.

*Done.*

I lay back on the thin mattress. Pulled the blanket up to my chin. My hands throbbed. My shoulders ached. But something inside my chest—something that had been clenched tight for years—finally loosened.

I wasn't going to beg anymore.

I wasn't going to explain.

I was going to walk away.

And I was going to do it in a way Julian would never see coming.

The next morning, a different car arrived. Black sedan. Silent driver. Mrs. Kowalski stood on the porch, arms crossed, watching me load my bag.

"Mr. Hart says you can go," she said. No apology. No acknowledgment.

I got in the car without looking back.

The plane. The flight. The landing at Teterboro. I watched it all from somewhere outside my body.

Julian was waiting at my apartment when I arrived. He stood in the hallway, hands in his pockets, expression carefully neutral.

"You're back," he said.

I walked past him. Unlocked my door.

"Elora." His voice softened. "I know it was hard. But you needed time to think about your actions. Laylah's recovering. She's forgiven you."

I set my bag down. Turned to face him.

His eyes searched mine. "Say something."

I smiled. Small. Polite. Empty.

"Thank you for the trip," I said quietly. "It was very clarifying."

I closed the door.

That night, I didn't cry. Didn't scream. Didn't break.

I sat at my kitchen table and made a list.

Everything I needed to do in the next ten days.

Everything I needed to become.

At the top of the page, I wrote two words.

*Never again.*
