My Fiancé Humiliated Me, So I Married His Brother

The Hart penthouse breathes old money—polished wood, aged wine, a fortune three generations deep that never needs to announce itself. I walk in beside Julian, my grandmother's emerald pendant resting against my collarbone, worn on purpose so Reuben Hart will see the one link to the woman who raised me. Then Julian humiliates me in front of everyone. So I marry his brother. Now the Hart dynasty is at war, and the man who threw me away is learning exactly what he lost.

My Fiancé Humiliated Me, So I Married His Brother Chapter 1

The penthouse smelled like money. Not the new-money kind — no loud cologne or imported lilies screaming for attention. This was old money. Polished wood. Aged wine. The kind of wealth that didn't need to announce itself because it had been announcing itself for three generations.

I stood at Julian's side in the elevator, watching the numbers climb. My grandmother's emerald pendant rested against my collarbone. I'd worn it on purpose. Julian's father turned sixty tonight, and I wanted Reuben Hart to see me wearing the one thing that connected me to the woman who raised me. The woman who taught me that some things were worth more than their price.

Julian checked his phone. Again. He'd been doing that all week.

"You look beautiful," I said quietly.

He glanced up. Blinked. "What?"

"I said you look good. The suit."

"Oh." He pocketed the phone. "Thanks."

The elevator opened directly into the penthouse. Soft jazz. Low lighting. A hundred people in tailored clothes holding crystal glasses. Waiters moved through the crowd like ghosts. I recognized most of the faces — Hart Industries board members, family friends, the kind of people who summered in the Hamptons and wintered in Aspen.

Madelyn Hart spotted us first. She glided over, elegant in navy silk, and kissed my cheek. "Elora. You look lovely."

"Thank you, Mrs. Hart."

"That pendant," she said softly, touching the emerald with one finger. "Your grandmother had exquisite taste."

Something warm spread through my chest. "She did."

Julian was already scanning the room. His jaw tightened. I followed his gaze and saw her.

Laylah Munoz stood near the windows in a pale pink dress. Simple. Modest. The kind of dress that said *I don't belong here but I'm trying so hard.* Her hair was pulled back. No jewelry. She looked like a watercolor painting in a room full of oil portraits.

Julian hadn't told me she was coming.

"I'll get us drinks," he said, and walked away before I could answer.

I watched him cross the room. Watched him stop beside Laylah. Watched her face light up like he'd just handed her the sun.

Madelyn followed my gaze. Her expression didn't change, but something shifted in her eyes. "Excuse me, dear," she said quietly, and moved toward a cluster of guests near the fireplace.

I stood alone in the center of the room.

A waiter offered champagne. I took a glass and sipped it. It tasted like nothing.

Ten minutes passed. Julian was still talking to Laylah. Her hand rested on his forearm. Light. Casual. The kind of touch that looked innocent but wasn't.

I turned toward the terrace doors.

That's when she moved.

Laylah stepped forward with her wine glass. I saw it happening in slow motion — the glass tilting, the red wine arcing through the air, the cold splash against my chest and stomach. The liquid soaked through the white silk of my gown instantly, spreading like blood.

Gasps rippled through the nearby guests.

"Oh my God," Laylah breathed, pressing her hands to her mouth. "Elora, I'm so sorry. I didn't see you—"

Julian was beside her in seconds. Not beside me. Beside *her*.

"Are you okay?" he asked Laylah, gripping her shoulders.

She nodded, eyes wide and glistening. "I feel terrible. I'm so clumsy—"

"It's fine," Julian said quickly. Then he looked at me. His expression hardened. "Don't make a scene. You're embarrassing yourself."

I stood there, wine dripping onto the marble floor, my grandmother's emerald pendant sticky against my skin. A dozen people were watching. Madelyn Hart. Reuben Hart. Mrs. Morrison, the housekeeper, standing frozen near the kitchen doors.

Julian took Laylah's elbow. "Let me get you something to drink. You're shaking."

They walked away.

I didn't move. Couldn't move. My hands were steady, but something inside my chest was cracking open like a fault line.

A waiter appeared with napkins. I took them. Pressed them against my gown. The wine had already set.

"Miss Stephens," Mrs. Morrison said quietly, appearing at my side. "There's a powder room down the hall. I can bring you—"

"I'm fine," I said. My voice sounded normal. Calm. "Thank you."

I walked toward the terrace doors. The cold air hit my face like a slap. I pressed my back against the stone railing and closed my eyes.

Breathe. Just breathe.

That's when I heard his voice.

Julian. Around the corner. Low and intimate.

"...once we're married, she'll be nothing more than a name on paper. I'll make sure she lives like a ghost in that house. You're the one I want beside me — you know that."

Laylah's soft laugh. "You promise?"

"I promise."

I stood perfectly still. The emerald pendant was cold against my skin. My grandmother's voice echoed in my memory: *Some things are worth more than their price.*

I'd been wrong.

Some things weren't worth anything at all.

I waited until their voices faded. Then I walked back inside, spine straight, face composed. I found Madelyn Hart near the fireplace.

"Mrs. Hart," I said quietly. "Would you tell Reuben I said happy birthday? I need to leave."

She studied my face. "Of course, dear."

I didn't look for Julian. Didn't say goodbye. I took the elevator down, got in my car, and drove across Manhattan with wine-stained silk stuck to my skin.

Jensen Hart's building was all glass and steel. Private elevator. I'd been here once before, years ago, for a family dinner. I still remembered the code.

The elevator opened into a dark hallway. Soft light spilled from a doorway at the end. I walked toward it.

Jensen sat in his wheelchair behind a massive desk, reading something on a tablet. He looked up when I appeared in the doorway.

His eyes dropped to my ruined gown. Then back to my face.

"Elora."

I stepped inside. Closed the door behind me.

"I want to make you an offer," I said.

He set the tablet down slowly. "It's midnight."

"I know."

"You're covered in wine."

"I know that too."

Silence. He leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled, watching me with those cold, calculating eyes that had terrified boardrooms for a decade.

"What kind of offer?" he asked finally.

I lifted my chin. "Marry me."

The silence stretched. His expression didn't change. But something flickered behind his eyes — surprise, maybe. Or recognition.

"Sit down," he said quietly. "Tell me your terms."

I sat.
