Chapter 4

As soon as my mother-in-law's eyes fell on me, she just grunted her acknowledgment and casually tossed my gift onto the pile of presents. She had never thought highly of me because she always believed I wasn’t good enough for her daughter and I was just a man without ambition.

Morgan gave her a jade bracelet with a flattering smile. My mother-in-law immediately wore it on her wrist in delight and kept praising him over and over again.

"Morgan! You're so kind. I really like a jade bracelet. They're good for one’s health."

Then, she glanced at me and scoffed, "Unlike some people, who look gloomy all the time. That kind of people is bringing bad luck with their gifts."

At that moment, Sandra noticed the children and she instinctively let go of my arm and rushed over. "Adam, Anna, did you miss Mommy?"

She then knelt and pulled the two children into her embrace as she said this.

Morgan stood by the side while watching them with a gentle smile. He was like a devoted husband. He naturally reached out and kissed Sandra on the cheek.

She patted his chest as if dusting off imaginary specks and asked softly, "Was the flight tiring for you? Was Adam and Anna being good children?"

As if suddenly remembering my presence, her real husband, hurriedly took the little boy by the hand and led him over to me.

Then she introduced him, "Regan, this is Adam. He is the older brother."

The boy looked almost identical to Morgan. His resemblance with his father was about ninety percent while his ten percent likelihood resembled Sandra, with the same thin lips and big eyes as her.

The little boys gave me a disdainful look and said, "You're so ugly. You're not as handsome as my dad at all."

Then he turned to Sandra and pouted, "Mommy, you promised me a big gift for my tenth birthday. What is it?"

Instead of addressing the boy's rudeness toward me, Sandra hesitated slightly before saying, "Mommy already has it prepared. However, you must be polite. This is Uncle Regan. Say hello to him quickly."

The boy lifted his chin arrogantly and said, "I know who you are. You're that useless guy. You stole my mom away from us. We don’t like you. Get lost!"

Sandra froze the moment she heard that and just when she was about to scold him, Morgan stepped in and said, "Sandra, children don’t always mean what they say. Don’t be too harsh on him. He barely gets to see you so it’s only natural he’s upset."

Guilt flashed across Sandra’s face. She quickly knelt, stroked the boy’s hair and coaxed him, "Adam, be a good boy. From now on, Mommy can be with you more often."

The boy nodded and a pleased smile spread across Sandra's lips and she straightened up and walked away with Morgan. Then, right before they walked out the door, she turned back and waved at me with a cheerful smile as if nothing had happened.
