Chapter 2

By the third morning, I had learned the rhythm of the communal hall.

Five a.m., the floor was mine. I moved the mop in long, even strokes, working from the far wall toward the door, the way Mabel had taught me to clean anything—start from the place you can't retreat to and work your way out. The hall smelled like last night's supper and woodsmoke. By six-thirty, pack members would filter in for breakfast, stepping over the wet sections without looking down, without looking at me.

Ivory arrived at seven.

She didn't need to be there. The kitchen staff handled breakfast service. But she came anyway, in a pale silk robe, her hair loose, and she stood at the head table and talked to whoever was nearest in the warm, easy voice she used for pack members whose names she'd bothered to learn. And once—just once—her hand lifted to her neck. Slow. Deliberate. Her fingers rested over Emmett's mark the way you rest a hand over something valuable in a crowd.

She wasn't looking at me when she did it.

She didn't need to be.

I wrung out the mop. I noted it. I filed it next to everything else I was cataloguing and kept moving.

Deep under the numbness, something shifted. Not grief. Something colder. Something that had edges.

---

The summons came that afternoon.

A pack Omega—younger than me, eyes fixed on the floor—delivered it in a folded note. *Report to the Luna suite. Linen reassignment. Three o'clock.*

I went.

The door was open when I arrived. I stepped inside and stopped.

I recognized the room. I had lived in it for two years before the rejection, back when Emmett had allowed me the suite as a gesture toward the ceremony that was always coming soon. I knew the angle of the afternoon light through the west window. I knew the exact height of the vanity mirror.

What I didn't recognize was any of it.

My books were gone. The shelf where I'd kept them held glass bottles and a row of Ivory's perfumes, arranged by height. Mabel's photograph—the one from her fifty-fifth year, the one where she was laughing at something off-camera—was gone. In its place, a small framed mirror. The wolfhound's worn leather lead, which I'd hung on the hook beside the wardrobe door, was gone.

Ivory was sitting at my vanity.

Not her vanity. Mine. She was sitting at mine, running a brush through her hair with the unhurried ease of someone in a room that had always been theirs.

"Lauren." She met my eyes in the mirror without turning. "The linen closet needs reorganizing. New assignments are on the list by the door." She set the brush down. "Oh—and the wolfhound. I had him relocated to the outer territory. Pack space efficiency. We needed the kennel area for storage."

The cold moved through my chest like a slow tide.

"Where in the outer territory," I said.

She smiled. It was a pleasant smile. "I'm sure he'll be fine."

I left without the linen list.

Deep in the hollow where Sera used to live, something shoved hard against the dark—a sharp, furious pulse that ran all the way down to my palms. I pressed my hands flat against my thighs as I walked and kept my face still.

---

I found him at dawn.

I had a labor rotation at the eastern boundary fence—clearing deadfall, which meant I had legitimate reason to be near the perimeter. I walked the outer ward line in the gray pre-light, and I found him sixty meters past the rogue ward boundary, in the frost-stiff grass on the wrong side of the wards.

He'd been large for his breed. I'd pulled him from a trap on the outer territory edge when I was fifteen, and he'd grown into a big, quiet animal who slept across my feet and growled at anyone who came to the door without knocking first. He had growled at Ivory from the first day she walked into the pack house. I had thought it was just his nature.

I crouched in the dirt beside him and stayed there for a long time.

The light came up gray and slow. Somewhere behind the tree line, birds started. I didn't move.

When I stood, my knees were stiff and my hands were steady.

I walked directly to Emmett's office.

His door was open. He was at his desk, reviewing something, and he looked up when I appeared in the doorway with the expression of a man who has already decided the category of the interruption before he hears it.

"Why," I said. Just the one word. I wasn't shouting. I wasn't crying. I was asking.

Something moved across his face—not guilt, not quite. More like inconvenience.

"This isn't the channel for—"

"Why." Again. Flat.

He set down his pen. And then the Alpha tone came down like a hand on the back of my neck—that specific pressure, that vibration in the floor, that command that bypassed argument and went straight to the spine.

"You will not raise your voice in this office." His voice was even. "You will go to the main hall. You will find Luna Ivory. You will kneel before her and address her correctly."

My body moved.

I felt it happen—my legs carrying me back down the corridor, into the hall, to where Ivory stood with two pack members near the fireplace. I felt my knees bend. I felt the floor come up to meet me.

"Luna," I said.

The word came out of my mouth in my own voice.

Ivory looked down at me with that same pleasant smile, and her hand went to her neck again—slow, deliberate, right at the mark.

And inside the hollow, inside the absence, inside the locked room where Sera had been silent for three days—something slammed against the walls so hard I felt it in my back teeth.

Not grief. Not fear.

Something that had been waiting a long time to be given a reason.
