My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress

9.3 / 10.0
Under the glow of the full moon, Lauren Ashford stood before the silent Shadowvale Pack in her ceremonial white dress, her wolf, Sera, singing with anticipation. She held hands with her fated mate, Alpha Emmett Voss, expecting a sacred union. Instead, Emmett uttered a devastating rejection that shattered their bond instantly. This ultimate betrayal left Lauren's mate mark frozen and hollow, changing her destiny forever.

My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 9:47 p.m. under a full moon, and I felt it happen inside my own throat.

Emmett's hands were still holding mine at the center of the ritual circle. His palms were warm. Ten years of waiting had brought me to this exact patch of moon-silvered grass, in a white ceremonial dress Mabel had helped me choose before her mind started slipping, with three hundred witnesses of the Shadowvale Pack ringed around us in silent formation. My wolf—Sera—was singing so loudly inside my chest that I could barely hear the officiant.

Then Emmett opened his mouth and said the wrong words.

"I, Emmett Voss, Alpha of Shadowvale, reject you, Lauren Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

Sera stopped singing.

The mate mark on the left side of my neck went cold first—a small, precise chill, like a fingertip of ice pressed just under my jaw. Then it went hollow. That's the only word I have for it. Like a door closing on an empty room. Like something had been living there and had just been told to leave.

I heard myself make a sound. It wasn't a word.

My knees hit the grass. The white skirt puffed up around me. Somewhere in the ring of witnesses, someone gasped—one gasp, quickly swallowed. No one moved.

Emmett let go of my hands.

He turned, walked three steps to the edge of the circle, and pulled Ivory Perez forward by the wrist. She was already dressed for it. That was the thing I noticed through the roaring quiet in my head—she was already wearing dark red, already wearing her hair up so her neck was bare. She had known. She had dressed for this.

Emmett bent his head to her throat and bit.

I felt it. Through the severed bond, through the hollow where my mark used to live, I felt the ghost of his teeth going into someone else's skin. My body jerked once on the grass. My hand went to my own neck, to the cold nothing there, and stayed.

Ivory made a small, satisfied sound. Emmett lifted his head. His mouth was red.

"Ivory Perez," he said to the pack, in the Alpha tone that vibrated through the ground under my knees, "is your Luna."

No one cheered. No one protested. Three hundred wolves stood in perfect silence, and I understood, kneeling in my own dress, that the silence was the answer. They had known too. Maybe not all of them. But enough.

Roland Ashby, Emmett's Beta, stepped into the circle. He did not look at my face. He hooked one hand under my elbow and lifted me to my feet like I was a chair being moved. My legs worked. That surprised me. I let him walk me out of the ring, past the front row of witnesses, past the officiant who was staring at the sky, past a boy of maybe fourteen who was crying without making a sound.

I didn't resist. I couldn't feel Sera anywhere. I reached inside for her the way you reach for a light switch in a familiar room, and my hand closed on nothing.

---

I woke on a cot in the basement.

Gray concrete walls. One high window, no glass, just bars. A folded gray shift on the floor beside the cot. My white dress was gone. I was in a plain slip I didn't recognize.

Roland was standing in the doorway with a piece of paper.

"Reassignment," he said, and set the paper on the cot. "Laundry at five. Kitchen prep at seven. Floors after supper. Omega quarters. You'll be told where to sleep tonight."

He paused. Not out of pity. Out of protocol.

"Formal grievance channel remains open to you," he said, the way a man reads a fire exit sign. "One audience per quarter."

Then he closed the door.

I sat on the cot with the paper in my lap and ran the last ten years through my head like a document. Every deferred date. Every explanation about pack politics. Every night he'd held my face in his hands and said, soon, soon. I looked for the error. I looked for the moment I should have known.

I didn't find one. He had been that good.

The cold hollow at my neck throbbed once and went numb.

I reached for Sera again. Nothing. Not silence—silence has a shape. This was absence.

I folded the reassignment paper into quarters. I folded it again. I put it under the cot.

Then I said his name out loud, once, very quietly, to see what my voice would do.

"Emmett."

It came out flat. No shake. No tears. Just the two syllables, laid down on the concrete like coins on a counter.

I thought: One audience per quarter.

I thought: The grievance protocol is a channel he cannot legally close without violating pack law in front of the Council.

I thought: He will close it anyway.

And somewhere far under the numbness, under the hollow, under the absence—something that wasn't quite Sera but wasn't quite me either shifted once in the dark.

Above me, through the high barred window, I heard the pack begin, at last, to cheer for their new Luna.
