# Chapter 2: The Alliance Treaty

## The Treaty Ceremony

The Grand Ballroom of the New York Metropolitan Hotel gleamed with crystal chandeliers and polished marble. I smoothed my midnight blue gown, a strategic choice—elegant yet powerful, like the pack I'd helped build.

"The Lycan Ambassador is impressed with your trade proposals," Beta Crawford murmured, his voice carrying an unusual note of respect. "He's agreed to exclusive rights for our territory."

I allowed myself a small smile. "The timber exchange will triple our revenue within a year."

"Your father would be proud," Crawford added, a rare compliment from him. "You've negotiated better terms than any Alpha's daughter could expect."

The mention of my father sent a familiar pang through my chest. I'd abandoned the Silver Moon Pack for Rhett, and now stood on my own merits. Father had died disappointed in my choice. Today, I would prove he'd been wrong about Rhett's potential—and mine.

I spotted Rhett across the room, his broad shoulders draped in a tailored tuxedo that emphasized his Alpha physique. My heart quickened despite my frustration with him. Seven years together, and he still made my pulse race.

But as I approached, his bored expression dampened my enthusiasm.

"Rhett," I greeted him with a smile that felt forced. "Ambassador Chen wants to discuss the final terms before signing."

"Can't you handle it?" He didn't bother looking up from his phone. "You've been doing all the talking anyway."

I swallowed my hurt. "This is your moment. The pack needs to see their Alpha leading."

With visible reluctance, he pocketed his phone. "Fine. Let's get this over with."

The ceremony began with traditional Lycan formalities. I stood beside Rhett, guiding him through each protocol while maintaining my perfect diplomatic mask. When Ambassador Chen raised the ceremonial goblet for the toast, I felt a surge of pride. This treaty would cement our pack's future.

"To the Nexus Pack," Chen announced, his voice carrying across the hushed ballroom. "May your territory prosper under—"

Rhett suddenly stiffened beside me. His eyes glazed over—the telltale sign of receiving an urgent mind-link. I recognized the expression immediately.

"Rhett?" I whispered, alarm creeping up my spine.

His breathing quickened. "Violeta," he gasped.

## The Suicide Threat

Before I could react, Rhett's face contorted in panic. "She's standing on the bridge over rogue territory," he blurted, loud enough for nearby representatives to turn. "She says she can't handle the pressure anymore."

"Rhett, keep your voice down," I hissed, glancing apologetically at the stunned faces around us.

But he was already moving, his movements jerky and uncontrolled. "She's going to jump," he said, his voice cracking. "She says no one understands what she's going through."

The room fell silent as Rhett's body began to change. His bones cracked, fabric tore, and within seconds, a massive black wolf stood where my mate had been.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Lycan representatives backed away, their faces masks of shock and disapproval.

"Alpha Wagner!" Ambassador Chen's voice cut through the chaos. "Control yourself!"

But Rhett was beyond reason. The wolf form lunged toward the exit, sending chairs crashing and dignitaries scattering.

"I'm sorry," I called after him, though he was already gone. "He—he wouldn't—"

The damage was done. I watched in horror as years of careful diplomacy crumbled before my eyes.

## The Humiliation

For two hours, I smoothed ruffled feathers and made desperate apologies. "The Alpha has been under tremendous pressure," I lied smoothly. "Please understand."

But the looks in their eyes told me they didn't understand. They saw weakness—a pack with an Alpha who couldn't control himself or his mate situation.

"The treaty remains valid," Ambassador Chen finally conceded, though his smile had cooled considerably. "But perhaps the Nexus Pack should focus on internal stability before expanding further."

I nodded, swallowing the humiliation. "Of course. We appreciate your understanding."

By the time I returned to the pack house, exhaustion weighed on me like chains. All I wanted was to find Rhett, demand explanations, and somehow salvage what remained of our reputation.

But when I reached our private quarters, I froze in the doorway.

Rhett sat on our bed—our bed—cradling Violeta in his arms. Her face was tear-streaked, her delicate body trembling against his chest.

"There, there," he murmured, stroking her hair. "You're safe now."

"Parker," he acknowledged without looking up. "Violeta needs rest. She almost did something terrible."

I stood motionless, watching another woman in my place, being comforted in my bed by the man who refused to mark me as his mate.

"Did you even consider what you were doing?" I asked quietly.

Rhett finally looked up, his expression hardening. "She needed me."

"And what about what I needed?" The words escaped before I could stop them.

He didn't answer. He didn't need to. His choice was clear.

As I turned to leave, Violeta's eyes met mine over Rhett's shoulder. For just a moment, her tears vanished, replaced by something cold and calculating.

She wasn't the fragile victim she pretended to be.

And I was beginning to realize just how dangerous that made her.
