When My Alpha Let Me Bleed Out for His Luna Chapter 1

I chose red because white was for brides, and I was done being patient.

The dress was simple — fitted through the waist, skirt falling just below the knee, the kind of red that reads as a statement before you've said a word. I'd bought it three weeks ago in a small boutique two towns over from the human hospital where I'd spent the worst month of my life. The salesgirl had said it made me look powerful. I'd smiled and paid cash.

I stood outside the Ironveil Pack's grand hall and listened to the noise inside. Music, laughter, the low hum of important people performing importance. Three allied Alpha delegations. Griffin had pulled out every stop for this one. A Naming Ceremony for the heir — Miranda's boy, the child born the same night I was bleeding out on a frozen road sixty miles north of here.

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. My pulse was steady. My wolf stirred, faint and slow, like something turning over in sleep. She'd been like that for months now — present enough to remind me she was still there, too weak to do much else. The doctors called it terminal bond deterioration. I called it what it was: Griffin's mark, six years overdue, rotting us both from the inside out.

I had less than one moon cycle. I'd done the math a hundred times. The numbers didn't change.

I pushed open the hall doors.

The scent hit the room before I did. White jasmine and winter rain — my scent, the one that had made Griffin's wolf go feral the night we came of age, the one I'd spent six months learning to carry like a weapon instead of a wound. I watched it move through the crowd the way a stone moves through still water. Unmated wolves stiffened. Heads turned. A Delta near the entrance actually took a step back.

I kept walking.

The hall was beautiful, I'd give them that. Garlands of white flowers along the ceremonial tables, candles everywhere, the Ironveil Pack's crest hanging above the dais where Miranda stood in ivory silk, one hand resting on the edge of the table like she owned it. Because she did. She'd bought it with my blood.

I found Griffin before he found me.

He was standing at the dais, turned slightly toward Miranda, and then he wasn't. His head came around like something had yanked it, and his eyes found me across the entire length of the hall. I watched the color drain from his face. I watched his jaw lock. I watched his hands go very still at his sides — that particular stillness that every wolf in his pack had learned to read as the moment before the storm.

His wolf was clawing at him. I could see it in the way his shoulders had gone rigid, the way his nostrils flared once, twice. Six months without my scent, and now here it was, full force, in a room full of witnesses.

Good.

I walked to the dais and set the gift box on the table in front of Miranda.

"Congratulations," I said. "On the baby. On the title. On all of it."

Miranda's eyes were flat and careful. She didn't touch the box.

"Open it," I said pleasantly.

She didn't move. So I opened it for her.

The silver-plated mirror caught the candlelight. The burner phone sat beside it, still in its packaging. And on top, folded open to the relevant page, a printed copy of pack law with one clause highlighted in red: the provision allowing a chosen bond to be dissolved by Alpha decree, with the specific conditions listed in neat, bureaucratic language.

"A Chosen Luna Survival Kit," I said. "The mirror is so you can check your neck every morning. The phone is in case you need to reach your rogue contacts quickly. And the law — well. You should know your options."

The room had gone completely silent.

I turned slightly, addressing the allied Alphas at the ceremonial tables. I recognized Victor Hale of the Silverfang Pack in the front row, his expression carefully neutral.

"The rogue ambush on the upstate road," I said. "November fourteenth. The payment was made in three transfers from a shell account registered to a property management company Miranda Bishop incorporated in September of that year. The burner phone used to coordinate the attack made eleven calls to a known rogue mercenary named Cade Farrow in the two weeks prior. Farrow's surviving associate signed a written confession in exchange for Lycan King's clemency. I have copies of all of it."

I slid the manila folder across the table. It landed in front of Miranda with a soft, final sound.

"I survived," I said. "In case anyone was wondering."

Nancy Carroll hadn't moved from the head table. I glanced at her — just once, just long enough to see the careful composure on her face, the way she was holding herself very still, the way her eyes had gone cold and calculating. She was already thinking about damage control. She would be thinking about it for the rest of her life.

Then Griffin's Alpha tone hit the room like a wall.

"Everyone out."

It wasn't loud. It never needed to be. The command rolled through the hall with the weight of something physical, and the allied delegations were on their feet before they'd consciously decided to move. I heard chairs scraping, the rustle of formal wear, the low murmur of people who understood they were witnessing something they would be talking about for years.

I didn't move.

Griffin crossed the hall in ten seconds. His hand closed around my arm — not rough, but absolute — and I let him steer me out because fighting him in front of the remaining witnesses wasn't the point. The point had already been made.

The drive to the pack house took twenty minutes. Griffin didn't speak. His hands were white-knuckled on the steering wheel, and I could feel the effort it was costing him to hold his human form — the faint tremor in his jaw, the way his eyes kept shifting, the wolf pressing against the surface.

I looked out the window at the dark Hudson Valley woods and thought about nothing in particular.

The pack house was exactly as I remembered it. Sprawling, gated, the kind of old stone and timber that looked like it had grown out of the hillside. Griffin had Cole stationed at the front entrance before we'd even gotten out of the car. I counted two Deltas at the side gate, one more near the garden path.

He'd locked the place down. For me.

"You're staying," Griffin said. It wasn't a question.

"Am I."

"I'll mark you tonight. The bond will—"

"Your mark won't save me." I said it the same way I'd recited the bank transfer dates in the hall. Clean. Factual. "Not even if I wanted it."

He stared at me. I watched him search my face for something — an explanation, a crack, anything he could use. I gave him nothing.

"Then why—"

"Goodnight, Griffin."

The guest room he gave me was the best one in the house. Of course it was. I stood in the center of it for a moment after he closed the door, listening to the sound of him settling on the floor outside — the shift of weight, the quiet exhale of a man who had decided that proximity was the same as penance.

I went to the bathroom and took my first dose of medication from the bottles I'd tucked behind the skincare products in my bag. Counted the pills. Counted the days.

Twenty-six, maybe twenty-eight if I was careful.

I sat on the edge of the bed in my red dress and thought about everything I still had left to do.

I was just getting started.
