# Chapter 3: The Point of No Return

## The Royal Guard Offer

I stared at the polished silver emblem in my hand, its weight far heavier than its size suggested. The Lycan King's royal insignia—a mark of highest honor among our kind.

"Alpha Wagner," the messenger had said with genuine respect, "your combat skills have impressed the Royal Court. The Lycan King personally requests your service in the Royal Guard."

I'd watched Rhett's face light up with pride—a glimpse of the man I'd fallen for seven years ago. For one breathtaking moment, I thought he might actually see the opportunity for what it was: validation of everything we'd built together.

"The Royal Guard?" Rhett had echoed, his fingers tracing the emblem's intricate design.

"A position of immense prestige," I'd added quickly, unable to keep the excitement from my voice. "This could secure our pack's future for generations."

But then his expression had shifted, that now-familiar shadow of obligation crossing his features. "When would I need to leave?"

"Immediately," the messenger replied. "Training begins next month in the Capital Territory. The position requires full dedication—no distractions, no divided loyalties."

I knew what that meant. No Violeta.

Rhett handed the emblem back without hesitation. "I can't accept."

The messenger's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Alpha Wagner, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Lycan King himself—"

"Thank you for the offer," Rhett interrupted firmly. "But I have responsibilities here that can't be abandoned."

I felt something crack inside me—not just disappointment, but the shattering realization that the man I'd built an empire for was willing to throw it all away.

"Rhett," I whispered later when we were alone. "Do you understand what you just rejected?"

"Violeta's condition requires my presence," he replied flatly. "She can't travel, and she needs my Alpha aura to stabilize."

"And what about what I need?" The words escaped before I could stop them.

He didn't answer.

## The Ultimatum

The pack's war room felt suffocating as I paced between the tactical maps spread across the long table. Financial reports lay scattered beside combat projections—seven years of careful planning now threatened by one man's weakness.

"Enough," I finally said, my voice echoing against the stone walls.

Rhett lounged in his chair at the head of the table, scrolling through his phone with bored indifference. Beta Crawford and the other ranking officers sat in tense silence, their eyes darting between us.

"I've spent seven years building this pack from nothing," I continued, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me. "I've negotiated treaties, trained warriors, managed finances—all while you've been distracted by her."

"Parker," Rhett warned, finally looking up. "You're overstepping."

"No." I straightened my spine and let my Alpha bloodline surge through my veins. When I spoke again, my voice carried the unmistakable resonance of an Alpha tone—a power I'd inherited from my father but rarely used.

"You will choose," I declared, the words vibrating with authority. "Either you fulfill your duties as Alpha of this pack, or you continue your obsession with Violeta. But you cannot have both."

The room went deadly silent. Even Crawford looked shocked—not at my words, but at my tone. No one had heard me use my full Alpha voice before.

Rhett flinched as the command hit him, his eyes flashing gold in response. For a moment, I thought he might actually listen.

"The pack faces financial ruin if you miss the next Alliance meeting," I pressed, relentless now that I'd found my strength. "The timber exchange will collapse. Our territory will be vulnerable. Is that what you want?"

## The Choice

Rhett stood slowly, his massive frame tense with anger. "You think you can command me? With your Alpha tone?" He laughed bitterly. "You've always been like this—cold, calculating, thinking of power and profit above everything else."

"That's not true," I protested, but he cut me off.

"Violeta needs me to survive," he said flatly. "She has no one else. You don't need anyone—you never have. You're too strong for your own good, Parker."

His words hit like physical blows. Each one carefully chosen to wound where I was most vulnerable.

"Is that really what you think?" I asked quietly, my voice barely above a whisper.

"It's what I know." Rhett's expression hardened. "You built this pack because you could—because it was a challenge. Not because you cared about the people in it."

I stared at him, this stranger wearing my mate's face. "And Violeta? You care about her?"

"Yes," he said simply. "She needs me in a way you never have."

In that moment, something inside me died—the last fragile hope that the man I'd loved still existed somewhere beneath the obsession.

"So that's your choice?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

Rhett nodded once, his eyes never leaving mine. "It always has been."

As I turned to leave the war room, I caught sight of Crawford's satisfied smirk from the corner of my eye. This wasn't just about Violeta anymore. The pack was fracturing beneath us, and I was the only one who could see it.
