Chapter 3

MAYA'S POV

Ethan opened the folder again and stared at my signature on the receipt. It was still Friday night, and Leo slept against my knee as Ethan laid the proposed settlement on the hallway table.

"That's all you have to say?" Ethan asked.

I skimmed the financial provisions: a furnished condominium, a trust fund, and a monthly allowance. Then I drew a line through those offers on my copy.

"I don't want these," I said. "My lawyer will send your lawyer a response."

"Aren't you going to read the terms?" Ethan asked, his voice strained with an unfamiliar hesitation. "The apartment is fully furnished. The allowance will let you live comfortably without working."

"I don't need your money, and I don't want your real estate," I said evenly. "I'm taking my documents, my clothes, and the things Leo made for me."

Ethan's brow furrowed. He glanced from the crossed-out offers to my face. In four years, I had watched him end arguments by reminding me who paid the bills. This time, I wasn't asking him to pay for anything.

"Maya, don't be ridiculous," he muttered, though the sharpness in his tone lacked its usual bite. "You have nothing outside this family."

"Then you have nothing to worry about." I put the sewing kit away, lifted Leo, and carried him to bed.

On Saturday morning, I was wheeling my suitcase toward the stairs when I heard gossip drifting from the second-floor linen closet.

"Mrs. Ellis said Maya's moving out today," one of the junior maids whispered. "Miss Sienna's luggage is already being moved into the master bedroom."

"It was bound to happen," the other replied. "She was never a real fit for Mr. Blackwell anyway."

A toy clattered onto the floor behind me.

Leo stood near the corner, his small hands clutching the straps of his green dinosaur backpack. His face was stark white, his chest heaving as he stared at the two maids. Before they could answer him, he bolted down the staircase. I left my suitcase on the landing and followed.

"Daddy!" Leo shouted, his voice cracking as he skidded into the dining room where Ethan was sipping his morning coffee. "Are you making Mommy leave?"

Ethan set his cup down and frowned. "Leo, lower your voice. Maya is leaving because she has her own life to live."

"No!" Leo ran up to the table, tears spilling over his lower eyelids. "She's my mommy! Why are you kicking her out?"

"We've discussed this," Ethan said in a measured, dismissive tone. "Maya is not your biological mother. Sienna is back now. She will take care of you, take you to school, and buy you whatever you need."

"I don't want Sienna!" Leo cried, his small shoulders shaking violently. "Mommy didn't leave me. You're making her leave!"

Ethan's face darkened. "That's enough. Go to your room."

Leo wiped his face on his sleeve and headed upstairs. I caught up with him on the landing and knelt beside him.

"I'm leaving this house, not you," I said. "We can still talk."

He nodded without looking at me and went into his bedroom. I gave him a moment, then finished packing. Twenty minutes later, I rolled my suitcase through the front doors.

Ethan asked for my house keys as I crossed the foyer. I unclipped them from my car key and left them on the console. I didn't look back at the family portraits. Four years of quiet service and swallowed pride ended the moment I shut the door behind me.

I loaded my suitcase into the trunk of my modest sedan, started the engine, and began driving down the long, winding driveway toward the estate's main gate.

As I approached the private access road, a sudden rustle in the back caught my eye in the rearview mirror.

A pile of jackets on the floorboard shifted.

I hit the brakes immediately, shifting the car into park.

I turned around and pulled back the jacket. Leo was curled behind the passenger seat, clutching his dinosaur backpack. His little green rolling suitcase was wedged beside him under the jackets.

"Leo?" I gasped, my heart stopping for a fraction of a second. "What are you doing here?"

"Don't send me back," he begged, tears immediately welling in his eyes as he grabbed my wrist. "Please, Mommy. I put my quilt and pencils in my suitcase. I won't eat a lot. Just take me with you."

A profound ache tightened in my throat. I unbuckled my seatbelt, reached into the back, and pulled him into a tight embrace.

"Sweetie, you can't sneak into cars like this. It's dangerous," I whispered, stroking his hair until his frantic breathing slowed.

I had never adopted Leo. Whatever rights a lawyer might be able to establish, I couldn't assume I had authority to drive him away over Ethan's objection. I would not give Ethan grounds to claim I had hidden his son.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Ethan's number.

He answered on the second ring, his voice clipped. "What is it, Maya? Did you forget something?"

"Leo is in my car," I said directly. "He hid in the backseat before I pulled out. I'm stopped at the end of the main driveway. Come get him."

There was a brief pause, followed by the sound of a chair scraping back. "Stay right there."

Five minutes later, Ethan's black SUV pulled up beside my sedan. He stepped out, his expression thunderous as he yanked open my rear door.

"Get out of the car, Leo," Ethan commanded, reaching in to grab the boy's arm.

Leo screamed, threw his arms around the base of my front seat headrest, and locked his fingers together in an unbreakable grip.

"No! I'm not going back with you!" Leo shrieked, kicking wildly at the air. "I'm going with Mommy! I hate that house!"

"Leo, let go right now!" Ethan snapped, trying to pry the boy's fingers loose.

Leo only gripped tighter, his face turning crimson from exertion. "I won't! If Mommy leaves, I'm going with Mommy!"

Ethan straightened up, his chest rising and falling with sharp irritation. He looked at me sitting in the driver's seat, his eyes cold and full of contempt.

"You really turned him against me, didn't you?" Ethan sneered.

"I called you the second I found him," I replied coldly. "I didn't ask him to get in this car."

Ethan scoffed, checking his watch with obvious disgust. "Fine. Let him stay with you tonight. One night in whatever cramped place you can afford, and he'll understand what life looks like without my money."

"Are you giving permission for him to stay with me tonight?" I asked, keeping my voice perfectly steady.

"Take him," Ethan said coldly, stepping back from the door. "He'll be begging to come home by breakfast tomorrow."

"Put it in a text," I said. "One overnight visit. You can collect him at nine tomorrow morning. I'll send the address before we leave."

Ethan rolled his eyes, but his confirmation arrived while he was still beside my door. I sent the Kingsley estate's address and told him we would be attending a family event there. He glanced at the screen.

"A guest address. How resourceful. Nine tomorrow, Maya."

I saved the exchange, then helped Leo into the booster seat I used for school runs. I buckled him in, took his quilt from the suitcase before securing it in the trunk, and checked the red allergy pouch in his backpack.

Only then did I drive through the gate. For twenty minutes, Leo held his quilt in the backseat while houses gave way to pine trees and open country roads.

Then, the highway gave way to a private, four-lane paved boulevard flanked by ancient oak trees and high stone walls that stretched for miles.

The car slowed as we approached a towering set of black wrought-iron gates bearing the golden crest of a roaring lion. Beyond the barrier lay the sprawling expanse of the Kingsley estate, hundreds of acres of manicured lawns, private gardens, and a grand limestone manor rising against the morning sky.

Two security guards in crisp black uniforms stepped forward from the gatehouse.

Leo pressed his nose flat against the glass of the window, his eyes wide with utter shock.

The lead guard glanced at the license plate, touched the brim of his cap with a respectful nod, and spoke into his radio.

"Gate clear. Miss Kingsley has returned home."

The massive iron gates slowly swung inward.

Leo turned to me, his small mouth open in total disbelief.

"Mommy..." he whispered, his voice trembling with awe. "Why does that guard know your name?"
