At 10:14 p.m., the bond shatters. Three years of waiting end when Chase steps onto the ceremonial platform and claims another Luna before every wolf who matters, leaving her publicly rejected in the white dress she chose herself. Torchlight paints Ironvale Pack in gold and shadow as she falls, and the bond refuses to die. Now the rejected mate faces a pack that watched her humiliation—and a choice: keep waiting for a man who chose another, or fight back against the mate bond itself.

My Mate Claimed Another Luna at Our Bond Ceremony Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 p.m. on the night I had waited three years to claim.

I stood at the ceremonial platform in the white dress I'd chosen myself—simple, no lace, because Chase once said he hated fuss. Torchlight painted the assembled Ironvale Pack in shades of gold and shadow. Every wolf who mattered was here. Chase's mother stood at the front, her chin high. The Beta and Gamma flanked the platform. Warriors lined the clearing's edge. I could smell pine smoke and night air and the faint residue of the healing ward I'd reinforced that morning, still humming at the tree line.

Chase stepped onto the platform. He wore the ceremonial Alpha cloak. His jaw was set. He did not look at me.

My wolf stirred—anxious, uncertain. I told her to wait. This was it. Three years of invisible labor, of mending warriors and sustaining wards while his mother assigned me laundry duty and called me "not Luna material" in front of the pack house staff. Three years of watching Chase take credit for ward-patterns I designed in my worn leather journal at two in the morning. Tonight it ended. Tonight he would mark me, and the pack would finally see what I'd been all along.

Chase's hand did not reach for mine. It hung at his side.

"I, Chase Wagner, Alpha of Ironvale," he said, voice carrying across the silent clearing, "reject you, Juliette Reynolds, as my mate."

The bond didn't break cleanly. It ripped.

Silver wire through my chest, tearing from sternum to spine. The mark on my neck—the half-formed thing we'd carried for three years, waiting for this ceremony to complete it—went cold. Not numb. Cold, like someone had pressed ice directly against the artery. Then hollow. Empty. A door slamming shut in a room that had never been furnished.

I couldn't breathe. My knees hit the ceremonial ground. The dirt was damp. Torchlight blurred. Pain flooded every nerve—not sharp, but vast, a tide that kept coming. My wolf let out a single sound inside my chest, high and keening, like something dying. Then she went still. Not silent. Still. Like she'd stopped mid-motion and couldn't remember how to move again.

Someone was ascending the platform. Penny Cruz. She wore red—bold, deliberate red—and her smile was rehearsed. She stopped beside Chase, tilted her neck, and his teeth found the junction of her throat and shoulder without hesitation. The mark bloomed dark against her skin. He pulled back and said, loud enough for every wolf to hear, "My true Luna."

Penny's gaze found mine. She was smirking. She wanted me to see it.

Chase turned to the pack. "Juliette was never strong enough to be Luna," he said. His voice was steady. Practiced. "Ironvale needs strength. Ironvale needs a leader who can stand beside me, not behind me."

The pack stood in absolute silence. Not one wolf spoke. Not one voice rose in protest. I scanned the faces—warriors I'd healed after border skirmishes, wolves I'd mended when they came back torn and bleeding, the Gamma whose shoulder I'd reset twice. They looked at the ground. At the torches. At Chase. Not at me.

My wolf was a whisper now, barely there. The cold scar on my neck throbbed with every heartbeat.

I stood.

It took effort. My legs shook. The clearing tilted once, then steadied. I did not look at Chase. I did not look at Penny. I walked past the silent pack, past the warriors who would not meet my eyes, past the Beta who shifted his weight and said nothing.

I went to the eastern ward-stone.

It stood at the tree line, half-buried in moss, humming faintly with the energy I'd poured into it every week for three years. I pressed my palm flat against its surface. The stone was warm. It recognized me. It had always recognized me, even when the pack didn't.

I severed the ward.

The protective barrier fractured across the tree line—light cracking like glass, dimming in visible waves. I felt it drain from the territory, from the soil, from the wolves standing fifty yards behind me. Someone gasped. A warrior stumbled. The bond I'd sustained alone for three years, the one Chase had taken credit for in every diplomatic meeting, every border negotiation, every summit—gone.

I turned and walked toward the pack border. Barnaby was waiting at the edge of the clearing, golden coat pale in the torchlight. He fell into step beside me without being called. His warmth was the only steady thing left.

I crossed the border. The fractured ward crackled faintly behind me, still breaking. I did not look back.

---

The motel room smelled like disinfectant and old carpet. I paid the clerk in cash—three years of carefully saved money, kept separate from the pack accounts, because some part of me had always known I might need it. The key was plastic. The bed was narrow. Barnaby curled at the foot of it, his head on his paws, watching me with dark, worried eyes.

I sat on the edge of the mattress. The cold scar throbbed. My wolf was still barely a whisper, curled somewhere deep inside my chest where I couldn't reach her. The room was silent except for the hum of the air conditioner and Barnaby's breathing.

I pulled the worn leather journal from my bag and opened it on my lap. Three years of ward-patterns, healing records, injury logs, defensive formations. Every entry in my handwriting. Every design signed with my initials, not his. I'd kept it all. Not because I thought I'd need it. Because it was mine, and I wouldn't let it disappear.

I turned to a blank page and began to write. I didn't know yet exactly why. I only knew I wouldn't let three years of invisible labor vanish with the bond.

My hand was steady. The pen moved across the page. Outside, the night was quiet. Ironvale's fractured ward was still breaking, and I was here, alone, with my dog and my records and the cold scar of a bond that had never been worth keeping.

I wrote until my hand cramped. Then I kept writing.
