You Kicked Me Out as Nobody, Why Is Your Son at My Family Estate? Chapter 1

I raised my husband’s son for three years.

I was the one who stayed beside Leo when he had nightmares, memorized every food he was allergic to, and sat on the bathroom floor when he cried because he could barely remember his dead mother.

Then my husband’s first love came home.

His mother placed her beside Leo and said, “Call her Mommy.”

Leo screamed, ran across the room, and buried himself in my arms.

My husband didn’t defend us.

He looked at me and said, “Stop confusing him. You were never his real mother.”

Two days later, he handed me divorce papers and told me to leave his house.

So I signed.

What he didn’t know was that I had just received the DNA results proving I was the missing daughter of one of the richest families in the country.

And when I drove away, his six-year-old son was hiding in my back seat.

MAYA'S POV

On Thursday afternoon, the kitchen smelled of sweet vanilla and warm sugar. I set a fresh batch of mini cupcakes onto the cooling rack, smoothing a swirl of light blue frosting over the top of the last one.

Sitting across from me at the kitchen island, six-year-old Leo swung his legs back and forth, clutching his school reading certificate like a prized trophy.

"Look, Mommy," he said, holding up a shiny gold star sticker the teacher had handed out that afternoon. "Mrs. Gable said this is for the Best Helper."

Before I could answer, he leaned across the counter, reached toward me, and carefully pressed the sticker right over my chest, flattening the edges against my linen apron.

"Why are you giving this to me?" I asked, laughing softly as I tapped the tip of his nose with a dab of leftover frosting. "You earned that star by helping the other children."

"Because whenever I forget my colored pencils or my gym shoes, you always bring them to school," Leo said with absolute seriousness. "Every single time. Other kids have drivers or nannies, but I have you."

"I only helped a little bit, sweetie."

Leo shook his head, hopped off his stool, and threw his arms tightly around my waist, burying his face in my apron. "No. You're the best Mommy in the whole world."

I stroked his soft brown hair, resting my chin against the crown of his head. Ethan and I had been married for four years. Leo had come to live with us at three, a year into our marriage, after Ethan obtained sole custody. For the three years since, I had bandaged scraped knees, stayed up through midnight fevers, and packed every lunchbox. He wasn't born from my body, but every beat of my heart belonged to him.

The heavy front door clicked open, followed by sharp voices echoing down the marble foyer.

"Set the luggage in the largest guest suite," Victoria's imperious voice rang out.

My mother-in-law walked into the dining room, her diamond-encrusted rings catching the chandelier light. Walking right beside her was Sienna Kingsley, Ethan's first love and the daughter of the family Victoria worshipped. She was not Leo's birth mother. She wore a tailored cream trench coat, her smile polished and radiant. Ethan followed a few steps behind them, loosening his silk tie with an exhausted, detached expression.

"You're back early," I said, untying my apron and placing the platter of cupcakes on the dining table.

Victoria didn't even look at me. Instead, she gestured sharply to the maid standing by the credenza. "Mrs. Ellis, move that setting to the far end of the table. Sienna will sit next to Ethan tonight."

The maid hesitated, casting an apologetic glance in my direction. My customary seat, the one I had occupied as Ethan's wife for four years, was right beside him at the head of the long mahogany table.

"Victoria?" I said, keeping my voice level despite the tightening in my chest.

"Don't make a fuss over furniture, Maya," Victoria cut in, waving a dismissive hand. She turned her attention to Leo, who had shrunk back toward my side. "Leo, come here. Look who came all the way back from Paris to see you. Sienna will be staying here often from now on. It's time you start calling her Mommy."

The room went completely silent.

I looked toward Ethan, expecting him to shut down the absurdity instantly. He pulled out a chair and signaled for wine. Mrs. Ellis set his dinner in front of him while I waited for an answer.

"Ethan?" My voice wavered slightly. "What is your mother talking about?"

Ethan cut into his steak without looking up. "Don't make a scene, Maya. Leo will have to adjust sooner or later to a woman truly suitable for the Blackwell family."

Every word felt like a physical blow against my chest. He said it so casually, as if discarding four years of marriage was nothing more than clearing an empty plate.

Sienna smiled, stepping forward with an oversized, glossy gift bag. She crouched to Leo's eye level, opened an expensive racing set, and lifted a sleek remote-control car from its box.

"I bought this special edition in France just for you, Leo," Sienna purred, holding the car out to him. "Do you like it? Come give me a hug and call me Mommy, and it's all yours."

Leo stared at the expensive toy, his small hands clenching into fists at his sides. His lower lip began to tremble, his big eyes turning bright red with unshed tears.

With a sudden shove, Leo knocked the toy out of her hands. The plastic cracked against the hardwood floor.

"No!" Leo screamed.

He spun around, bolted across the dining room, and leaped straight into my arms. He buried his face into the crook of my neck, clinging to my sweater with every ounce of strength in his tiny fingers.

"I don't want it!" he sobbed hysterically. "I already have a mommy! Maya is my mommy!"

"Leo!" Victoria snapped, her face twisting in anger. She glared at me as if I were vermin. "Look at what you've done to him, Maya. You've filled his head with complete nonsense. You're ruining Ethan's son."

"He's a child, Victoria," I said, wrapping my arms protectively around Leo's trembling back. "You can't just force a stranger on him and demand he erase me."

Ethan stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood. His face was dark with irritation. He walked over, grabbed Leo by the waist, and pulled him away from my arms with cold efficiency.

"Let go of him, Maya," Ethan commanded. He held the crying boy firmly by the shoulders, forcing Leo to look up at him. Ethan's voice held no warmth as he spoke directly to his son. "Maya is not your real mother. Stop confusing yourself."

The harshness in Ethan's voice shattered whatever remaining illusion I held about our marriage.

Leo thrashed in his father's grip, kicking wildly until he broke free. He didn't run to Sienna, nor did he look back at Ethan. He stumbled back to me, hiding behind my skirt and clutching my hand so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"Mommy..." Leo whispered, looking up through a blur of tears. His voice shook so hard he could barely get the words out. "If they don't want you anymore... will you still want me?"

A sharp ache tore through my chest, but I forced my expression to remain steady. I knelt on the floor, gently wiping the wet streaks from his cheeks with my thumbs.

"I will always want you," I told him, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. "And you never have to call anyone Mommy just because they tell you to."

I stood up, took Leo's hand, and walked him upstairs to his bedroom, ignoring Victoria's bitter complaints and Sienna's fragile, rehearsed sigh behind us.

After reading Leo three bedtime stories, I waited until he fell asleep. I couldn't face the bedroom I shared with Ethan tonight, so I went to the guest room down the hall.

The silence of the house felt absolute.

My phone vibrated on the bedside table. I picked it up and unlocked the screen.

It was a message from Harrison Kingsley. A month earlier, investigators tracing conflicting maternity records had contacted me. I had agreed to testing and met Harrison and his wife, Eleanor, in private. We had kept the inquiry confidential until an independent laboratory could confirm the first result.

*The independent test confirms it. You are our daughter. Welcome home, Maya. As we agreed, we will announce your return at the gala this Saturday.*

I looked down at the screen for a long time. For years, I had bent over backward to earn Victoria's approval and Ethan's affection, enduring their cold disdain because I thought love required sacrifice.

I glanced at the simple platinum wedding band on my left ring finger.

For the first time in four years, I didn't wonder how to fix the cracks in this house. I didn't care to explain myself to Ethan, and I didn't care what Sienna thought she was taking.

Without a single tear, I twisted the ring, slid it off my finger, and set it down on the cold glass of the vanity.
