Chapter 5

Nora Vance called me three days after I sent the email.

"I'm in," she said. No preamble. No questions about payment. Just those two words.

We met at a coffee shop in Brooklyn. She was younger than I expected. Early thirties. Dark hair pulled back. Laptop bag slung over one shoulder. She ordered black coffee and sat across from me in the back corner booth.

"Tell me what you need," she said.

I slid a folder across the table. Arthur's medical records. The timeline. The five-hour gap.

"I need the hospital surveillance footage," I said. "From the day he died. Specifically the corridor outside his room."

Nora opened the folder. Scanned the pages. Her expression didn't change.

"You think someone deleted it," she said.

"I know someone deleted it."

She looked up. "How?"

"Because the hospital told me the cameras malfunctioned that afternoon. All of them. On the same floor. At the same time." I leaned forward. "That's not a malfunction. That's a cover-up."

Nora closed the folder. "If they deleted it properly, there's nothing to recover."

"And if they didn't?"

She smiled. Small. Sharp. "Then they left breadcrumbs."

It took her four days.

She called me at midnight. I was sitting at my kitchen table with Arthur's Moleskine notebook open in front of me. I'd been trying to write. The page was blank.

"I got it," Nora said.

"The footage?"

"Fragments. Whoever deleted it knew enough to access the system, but not enough to scrub it clean. They left metadata. Timestamps. Partial frames."

"Can you recover the actual video?"

"Some of it," Nora said. "Enough."

I closed the notebook. "Send it to me."

"I'm sending you a secure link. Password protected. Don't open it on a network you don't control."

The link arrived two minutes later.

I opened my laptop. Disconnected from Wi-Fi. Used my phone as a hotspot. Typed in the password.

The video player loaded.

Grainy footage. Black and white. The hospital corridor outside Arthur's room. Timestamp: 11:43 PM.

A figure in scrubs walked into frame. Tall. Male. Face angled away from the camera. He swiped a badge at Arthur's door. The lock disengaged. He stepped inside.

The timestamp jumped. 11:51 PM.

The same figure exited. Walked back down the corridor. Disappeared around the corner.

Eight minutes.

I played it again. Paused on the badge swipe. The image was blurred, but I could make out part of the ID: a hospital logo, a partial name.

I zoomed in. Enhanced the contrast.

The name resolved into clarity.

*Dr. Brendan Payne.*

I stared at the screen.

Then I called Elliot Raines.

"I have the footage," I said. "I need you to walk me through what happens next."

Elliot was quiet for a moment. Then: "You need to go to the police. And you need a lawyer who specializes in medical malpractice and wrongful death."

"I have a lawyer," I said.

"Good. Call him. Now."

I hung up and dialed Marcus Webb.

He answered on the second ring. "Siena. It's one in the morning."

"I need you," I said. "Arthur was murdered."

Silence.

"Say that again," Marcus said slowly.

"Someone injected something into his IV line. I have surveillance footage. I have medical records. I have a timeline." My voice was steady. Flat. "I need you to help me build a case."

"Jesus," Marcus breathed. "Who?"

"Dr. Brendan Payne. Arthur's attending physician."

"Why would he—"

"I don't know yet," I said. "But I'm going to find out."

Marcus was silent for a long moment. Then: "Send me everything you have. I'll start making calls."

I hung up. Forwarded him the secure link. Then I sat back and stared at the frozen image on my screen.

Dr. Payne's blurred face. His hand on the door.

Eight minutes.

I thought about Giana's smile. About Ethan's detached expression when he told me to apologize. About the five-hundred-thousand-dollar question I hadn't asked yet.

Who paid him?

My phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.

*Ms. Roberts, this is Charleigh Mitchell. I hope it's okay that I'm reaching out. I've been making some calls. Talking to people who worked on the production. People who've worked with Ethan before. There's a pattern. I think you should know about it.*

I stared at the message.

Then I typed: *Tell me everything.*

Another text arrived within seconds. This one from Ethan.

*Siena, I know you're grieving. I want to make things right. I've reinstated your original script. Giana's credit has been removed. You have full creative control again. Please call me.*

I read it twice.

Then I deleted it.

I didn't respond.

I opened a new document on my laptop and titled it: *Evidence.*

I started typing.

Timeline. Footage. Medical records. Witness statements. Every piece I had. Every piece I was going to find.

I typed until the sun came up.

And I didn't stop.
