Chapter 2

The ambulance lights painted the house red and blue. I watched them from somewhere far away. Voices moved around me. Hands touched my arms, my neck, checking things I couldn't name. Someone cut my shirt open. I heard a sharp intake of breath.

"Jesus. When was the surgery?"

"Four days ago. County General."

"She should still be in post-op. What the hell is she doing at home?"

I tried to answer, but my mouth wouldn't work. The sky tilted. Then I was moving, strapped to something that rolled, and Grayson's face appeared above me. His lips were moving. I couldn't hear the words over the ringing in my ears.

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them again, the ceiling was white. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead. My chest felt tight, wrapped in fresh bandages that pulled with every breath. An IV line ran into my left arm. The room smelled like antiseptic and floor wax.

A doctor stood at the foot of my bed, talking to someone outside my line of sight.

"Stage III invasive ductal carcinoma. Double mastectomy performed at County General four days ago. No reconstruction. No follow-up oncology scheduled. No insurance on file. We've stabilized the sutures, but she's severely anemic. She's going to need transfusions, wound care, and immediate oncology consultation."

Grayson's voice. Low and hollow. "Why wasn't she at the military hospital?"

"You'd have to ask her that, Commander."

"I'm asking you."

A pause. "The military hospital requires active dependent status and proof of coverage. If she wasn't on your insurance—"

"She was. She is."

"Then someone dropped her from the system, or she couldn't access the paperwork. County General doesn't ask questions. They just treat who comes through the door."

Silence.

"How long has she been sick?"

The doctor's tone flattened. "The pathology report indicates the tumor was at least eighteen months old. Maybe longer. She would have known for a while."

I turned my head toward the window. The sky outside was gray. I wondered what time it was. What day.

Footsteps approached the bed. Grayson's face appeared at the edge of my vision. His uniform was wrinkled. His eyes were red.

"Elena."

I looked at him. I didn't speak.

"I didn't know," he said. "I swear to God, I didn't know."

I reached for the call button clipped to the bed rail. My fingers were slow, clumsy. I pressed it twice.

A nurse appeared within thirty seconds. Middle-aged. Tired eyes. I recognized her from my post-op visits to County General. Diane.

"Mrs. Walker?" she said.

My voice came out thin and dry. "I don't want him in this room."

Diane looked at Grayson. Then back at me. "Understood."

Grayson stepped forward. "Elena, please—"

"Sir," Diane said. Her tone was polite and immovable. "You need to leave."

"She's my wife."

"She's my patient. And she just asked you to go."

Grayson's jaw worked. His hands curled into fists at his sides. For a moment I thought he might argue. Might pull rank. Might do what he always did when someone told him no.

But he didn't.

He looked at me one more time. Then he turned and walked out.

Diane waited until the door clicked shut. Then she adjusted my IV line and checked the bandages without comment.

"You want water?" she asked.

"Tea," I said. "If you have it."

"I'll find some."

She left. The room was quiet. I closed my eyes and let the silence settle over me like a blanket.

Grayson didn't leave the hospital.

I knew because Diane told me. She brought me tea in a paper cup the next morning and said, "Your husband's still in the waiting area."

I sipped the tea. It was too sweet, but I didn't say anything.

"He slept in one of the chairs," she continued. "Didn't go home. Didn't change clothes. Just sits there."

I set the cup down on the bedside tray. "Okay."

Diane studied me for a moment. Then she nodded and left.

The second day, a different nurse mentioned it. Younger. Sympathetic.

"He's still out there," she said while changing my dressings. "He asked if you were okay. I told him I couldn't say."

"Good," I said.

She bit her lip. "He looks pretty rough."

I didn't answer.

On the third day, Diane brought me soup and sat in the chair by the window.

"He's eating from the vending machines," she said. "Hasn't showered. Hasn't left except to use the bathroom. People are starting to stare."

I ate a spoonful of broth. It tasted like salt and nothing.

"Do you want me to tell him something?" Diane asked.

I looked at her. She had kind eyes. The kind that had seen too much and still chose kindness anyway.

"No," I said.

She nodded slowly. "All right then."

That night, I lay awake and stared at the ceiling. My chest ached. The morphine drip kept the worst of it at bay, but there was a deeper pain the drugs couldn't touch. It sat in the hollow where my daughter used to live. Where my marriage used to live. Where I used to live, before I gave it all away for a man who couldn't be bothered to answer the phone.

I thought about Grayson in his plastic chair. Unwashed. Unfed. Waiting.

I wondered if he thought this was penance.

I wondered if he thought three days in a waiting room could balance three years of silence.

I turned onto my side, careful of the sutures, and closed my eyes.

He could wait as long as he wanted.

I had nothing left to give him.
