After His Mistress Murdered Our Daughter, My Husband Begged Me Back

His voice cuts through the house like he still owns it. "Elena!" She doesn't turn. Her hands grip the counter—standing alone still costs her. Surgical drains pull with every shallow breath, bandages damp beneath her shirt. Then the door slams. After his mistress murdered their daughter, her husband fled into that other woman's arms. Now he's returned, begging her back as if grief can be undone by a single word. But she is no longer the woman who once answered to his call—and some betrayals are beyond forgiveness.

Chapter 3

He started with the records.

I know because Diane told me later. She said a man in a wrinkled uniform sat in the hospital's public records office for six hours straight, pulling files, making calls, writing things down in a small notebook with a pen that kept running dry.

I was three floors up, sleeping through morphine, while Grayson Walker finally did the math.

The county hospital had everything. Elena Walker, patient. Laylah Walker, patient. Dates, diagnoses, billing statements. The kind of paperwork that tells the whole story if you're willing to read it.

He read it.

The diner wages came first. Overnight shifts. Eleven dollars an hour. The direct deposits into my account, small and irregular, showing up between the four hundred dollar transfers from his account like punctuation marks in a sentence that didn't make sense. He would have seen how I stretched it. How I paid the electric bill one month and skipped it the next. How Laylah's prescriptions showed up as recurring charges right up until they didn't.

Then the experimental treatment estimate. Two hundred thousand dollars. The number the oncologist had written on a referral form that I kept in a folder I carried everywhere, the folder I showed to three different financial assistance offices and two different charities before I understood that no one was going to help us.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

And then, in the same twelve-month window, the wire transfers. His account to Renata's training fund. The Colorado facility. The equipment. The coaching fees. The travel. The apartment near the training center that he'd called a business expense.

Two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars.

I imagine him sitting there with those two numbers. Side by side. Not moving for a long time.

---

The phone records were worse.

Seventeen calls. I know the exact number because I counted them myself, sitting in that hospital hallway at two in the morning, watching my battery die and not caring.

Seventeen calls over four hours. The night Laylah's fever spiked to 104 and her oxygen levels dropped and the attending physician pulled me aside and said we need to discuss what happens if she doesn't stabilize.

Every call went to voicemail.

Grayson's military account flagged a restaurant charge that night. Not his card. Renata's. But the GPS data from his phone put him at the same location. A place in Georgetown with a wine list and low lighting. Forty minutes from the hospital.

Forty minutes.

I had carried Laylah six blocks in the rain because I couldn't afford the ambulance. I had checked her in at the county ER with forty-three dollars in my wallet and a Ziploc bag of her medications. I had called her father seventeen times while she burned up in a hospital bed.

He was forty minutes away. At dinner.

---

The flashbacks come to me even now, even when I don't want them.

Laylah's weight in my arms. She was seven, but she felt lighter than she should have. Her head against my shoulder, her breath shallow and fast, her fingers curled into my jacket. The rain came down hard and I walked faster and she said, Mama, are we almost there, and I said, Almost, baby, almost, and I didn't let myself run because I was afraid of falling.

In the hospital room, on the third night, she asked me in a small voice that broke something permanent inside me: Why doesn't Daddy answer?

I told her Daddy was very far away. I told her the signal was bad. I smoothed her hair back from her forehead and I lied to my dying child because the truth was too heavy for a seven-year-old to carry.

The surgery was supposed to save her.

I stood in the hallway and prayed to a God I wasn't sure I believed in anymore while they took her back. And then the lights went out.

Not a flicker. Not a brief outage. A full blackout. The monitors flatlined into silence. Somewhere behind the OR doors, I heard shouting. Urgent, controlled, professional shouting. The kind that means something has gone wrong and everyone knows it.

The backup generators kicked in after ninety seconds.

Ninety seconds is a very long time.

She made it through the surgery. She died eleven days later anyway. Her small body had simply run out of fight.

I was holding her hand. The room smelled like antiseptic and the cheap lavender lotion I'd bought at the hospital gift shop because she liked the smell. Her fingers went slack in mine at 3:17 in the morning.

I sat there until the sun came up.

No one called to check on us. No one came.

---

Three floors below me, Grayson was learning all of this for the first time.

I didn't feel sorry for him.

I just felt tired. The specific, bone-deep tiredness of a woman who has been carrying something alone for so long that she has forgotten what it felt like to put it down.

I turned toward the window. The Seattle sky was the color of old dishwater.

Outside, it had started to rain.
