After His Mistress Murdered Our Daughter, My Husband Begged Me Back

8.8 / 10.0
His voice cuts through the house like he still owns it. "Elena!" She doesn't turn. Her hands grip the counter—standing alone still costs her. Surgical drains pull with every shallow breath, bandages damp beneath her shirt. Then the door slams. After his mistress murdered their daughter, her husband fled into that other woman's arms. Now he's returned, begging her back as if grief can be undone by a single word. But she is no longer the woman who once answered to his call—and some betrayals are beyond forgiveness.

After His Mistress Murdered Our Daughter, My Husband Begged Me Back Chapter 1

I heard his voice before I saw him.

"Elena!"

It cut through the house like a command. Sharp. Certain. The voice of a man who expected doors to open and questions to be answered without delay.

I was in the kitchen. My hands were braced on the counter because standing upright still took effort. The surgical drains pulled at my chest with every breath. The bandages underneath my loose cotton shirt were damp again—not bleeding, just weeping, the way the county hospital nurse said they would for another week at least.

I heard the front door slam. Footsteps in the hall. Two sets.

"Elena, where the hell are you?"

I turned slowly. Grayson stood in the kitchen doorway, and for a moment I forgot how to breathe. Three years. Three years since I'd seen him in person, and he looked exactly the same. Pressed uniform. Broad shoulders. That jawline I used to trace with my fingers on Sunday mornings when we were young and stupid and I still believed love was enough.

Behind him, Renata Ortiz leaned against the doorframe. She wore his late mother's diamond pendant. The one Patricia Walker had left for me in her will. The one Grayson gave to Renata instead because I "wouldn't appreciate it."

Renata's lips curved into something that wasn't quite a smile.

"You look tired," she said softly.

I didn't answer her. I looked at Grayson.

"Where's Laylah?" he said.

My hands tightened on the counter edge. The drainage tube on my left side pulled. I felt the sting all the way down to my ribs.

"I want to see my daughter," Grayson continued. His voice was louder now. Impatient. "I've been back in Seattle for two days. You didn't return my calls. You didn't answer the door yesterday. Whatever game you're playing, it's over. Bring her out here."

I stared at him. At the man I used to love. At the father who hadn't called once during Laylah's final hospitalization. Who hadn't answered when I begged him over the phone while our daughter's fever spiked to 104. Who sent me four hundred dollars a month while he paid for Renata's Olympic training facility and her luxury apartment in Alexandria.

"Laylah is dead," I said.

My voice didn't shake. It didn't rise. It was flat and factual, the way I used to deliver mission reports back when I wore a uniform that mattered.

"She's been dead for three years."

Grayson's face went blank. Then his eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"She died," I said. "Leukemia. You knew she was sick. I told you. I called you seventeen times in the last month of her life. You sent me to voicemail."

He shook his head slowly. "No. No, you're lying."

Renata stepped closer to him. Her hand touched his arm. Light. Familiar.

"Grayson," she murmured. "She's putting on a show. You know how she gets."

His expression shifted. I watched it happen in real time. Shock hardened into something colder. Contempt.

"You're doing this to punish me," he said. "You're hiding her. You want me to feel guilty for being overseas, so you're staging some sick—"

"She's dead," I repeated.

He crossed the kitchen in three strides. His hands clamped onto my shoulders. The pressure sent a white-hot flare of pain through my chest. I gasped. My knees buckled.

"Stop lying to me!" he shouted.

Then he shoved.

I hit the floor hard. My shoulder took the impact first, then my side. The surgical site screamed. I felt something tear. Warmth spread across my ribs, soaking into the bandages.

I didn't make a sound.

Grayson was already walking away. Through the kitchen. Through the back door. Into the yard.

I heard him before I saw what he was doing.

"Where is she, Elena? Where are you hiding her?"

I dragged myself upright. My hands left red smears on the tile. I stumbled to the doorway and looked out.

Grayson was in the garden. My garden. The small circle of stones I'd arranged myself because I couldn't afford a cemetery plot. The flowers I planted because Laylah loved daisies. The wooden marker I'd carved with a kitchen knife because a headstone cost two thousand dollars I didn't have.

He kicked the stones apart. They scattered across the grass.

"Grayson, stop—"

He ripped up the flowers. Fistfuls of roots and soil. He threw them aside and kept digging.

"This is insane," he was saying. "You're insane. You think I won't find her? You think I'll just believe—"

His boot connected with something small and ceramic.

It cracked.

Ash spilled across his hands. Gray and fine and unmistakable.

Grayson stopped moving.

He crouched slowly. His fingers touched the broken urn. He turned it over. I watched him read the engraving I'd paid for with tip money from the diner.

Laylah Marie Walker.

He looked up.

I was still standing in the doorway. Blood had soaked through my shirt now. It dripped onto the concrete step. My chest was flat under the loose fabric. The drainage tubes were visible through the cotton. The bandages were red.

Grayson's face went white.

"Elena—"

I didn't say anything.

His eyes moved from my face to my chest to the blood pooling at my feet.

"What—what happened to you?"

I looked at him. At the man who used to be my husband. At the father who came home three years too late.

"Cancer," I said.

Then my knees gave out, and the world went dark.
