Chapter 3

I slid onto the hand-stitched leather seat of the Maybach and pulled the heavy door shut.

The soft mechanical latch clicked into place, sealing out the street and cutting off Tyler's frantic shouting mid-syllable. The quiet inside the cabin was instantaneous, thick, and insulated from the chaos left behind on the sidewalk.

Julian Thorne sat beside me in a tailored charcoal suit, his broad shoulders relaxed against the dark upholstery. He set aside his tablet, picked up a sleek thermos from the center console, and poured a stream of clear, steaming liquid into a porcelain cup.

He offered it to me. "Drink. Your throat sounds raw."

I took the cup between both hands. The warmth seeped through my cold fingers, steadying the tremor that had started in my knuckles the moment I walked out of the house. I took a slow sip. It was warm water with lemon and honey.

Julian watched me over the rim of his own glass, his sharp gray eyes missing nothing.

"You took your time," Julian said, his deep baritone measured and calm. "Though I suppose dismantling a three-year marriage requires a few extra minutes."

"I had to make sure the foundation was completely burned before I walked out," I replied, setting the cup into the recessed holder.

Julian’s lips curved into a faint, appreciative tilt. "Good. Half-measures only invite vermin back into the house."

He reached into his breast pocket, retrieved a pair of rimless reading glasses, and set them on the bridge of his nose.

"I've been tracking the literary voice of Ghostwriter E for three years, June," Julian said smoothly, turning his gaze back to me. "Ever since *The Velvet Hour* made waves at Sundance."

My pulse ticked upward. "You knew back then?"

"Tyler Mercer doesn't possess the emotional depth to write an authentic character beat if his life depended on it," Julian said with calm certainty. "His dialogue has always been hollow, bloated vanity. But the structure of that film—the subtext, the quiet grief, the way the dialogue cut directly to the bone without wasting a syllable—that wasn't him. It was you."

"The industry believed him," I murmured.

"The industry believes whatever story comes wrapped in an established last name and thirty million dollars in marketing," Julian replied. "I don't. I know real genius when I read it. And I don't invest in figureheads."

Through the tinted rear window, I saw Tyler sprint through the iron front gates of our property. His tuxedo shirt was unbuttoned, his hair disheveled, and his face twisted with frantic rage as he waved his arms at the car.

The driver pressed the accelerator.

The Maybach surged forward with effortless power, leaving Tyler standing in a cloud of exhaust at the curb. He choked on the fumes, stumbling backward as we turned onto the main boulevard and accelerated into traffic.

Julian didn't even bother looking back. He reached forward and tapped a button on the center dashboard display.

A call connected instantly.

"Mr. Thorne," a crisp, authoritative male voice spoke through the encrypted sound system.

"Marcus," Julian said. "Execute the copyright enforcement package."

"Understood, sir. The formal cease-and-desist notices and copies of the federal registration have just been transmitted. We notified Mercer Productions, the completion bond company, CAA, and the four lead equity partners attached to *Broken Soles*."

"The financing status?" Julian asked.

"Completely frozen," Marcus replied without hesitation. "The completion bond company and the lead equity partners have frozen further disbursements pending resolution of the underlying intellectual property dispute. The project cannot be greenlit, budgeted, or staffed. If Tyler Mercer shoots one frame of film, he exposes himself to enhanced statutory damages and an emergency federal injunction."

"Excellent work," Julian said. "Keep the pressure absolute."

He ended the call with a single touch.

Before the screen could go dark, my phone began to vibrate violently against my thigh. The screen flashed with Tyler's contact photo.

I swiped the icon and switched it directly to speakerphone.

"June!" Tyler’s voice exploded through the car speakers, cracked with hysteria. "What the fuck did your attorneys just send to my production office? The bond company just froze our pre-production escrow! The studio head from Sony is demanding an emergency meeting! Call your lawyers right now and retract the claim!"

In the background of the call, I heard the sharp, frantic clatter of high heels against hardwood floor, followed by the heavy slam of an office door.

Evelyn's shrill voice cut through the background static. "Tyler! Stop shouting at that ungrateful valley girl! Put the phone down!"

"She locked the funding, Mom!" Tyler yelled away from the receiver. "The bond company flagged the copyright dispute!"

"Let her sue," Evelyn snapped, her voice carrying that trademark arrogance that had suffocated me for three years. "She has no capital, no industry allies, and no money to fight a protracted federal lawsuit against the Mercer estate. She thinks filing a piece of paper makes her an author? In this town, money talks, and she doesn't have a dime."

A second voice chimed in—soft, theatrical, and laced with venom.

"Tyler, darling, don't let her hold you hostage," Chloe said, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "She's doing this out of jealousy because she saw us together at the gala. She thinks she's indispensable, but nobody cares about a nameless ghostwriter. We don't need her third act anyway. We can hire a seasoned script doctor to finish the climax by tomorrow afternoon."

"Chloe is right," Evelyn commanded through the line. "We have the Cinema Guild Gala tonight. The reclusive head of the Thorne conglomerate will be there looking for prestige acquisitions. We'll pitch him the concept directly, secure replacement funding under a private equity deal, and leave this little girl to drown in legal debt."

Tyler took a deep breath, his voice regaining its condescending swagger as he spoke back into the phone.

"Did you hear that, June?" Tyler sneered. "You just burned your only bridge in Hollywood. You have until five o'clock to sign the release and hand over the third act. Otherwise, Chloe and I will replace you, finish the picture, and make sure your name is blacklisted from every writers' room from Burbank to New York."

I looked out the window at the passing palm trees under the bright California sun.

"Good luck at the gala, Tyler," I said evenly.

I tapped the screen and hung up.

A heavy silence settled over the luxury interior.

Julian gave a low, dry chuckle. He set his porcelain cup down and picked up a heavy, black leather portfolio from the side compartment. He opened it, revealing a thick contract bound in dark buckram, alongside a gold-embossed VIP credential.

He slid the documents across the leather console and into my lap.

"An independent production agreement," Julian said, his gray eyes locking onto mine with undisguised warmth and a sharp edge of intrigue. "Full greenlight autonomy, final cut approval, and a forty-million-dollar production budget financed directly through my private fund. You write the script, you choose the director, and your name sits alone on the title card."

I looked down at the contract. At the top of the title page, embossed in clean silver lettering, was the title of my life's work: *Broken Soles*.

Beside it lay the gold VIP badge for tonight’s Cinema Guild Gala, bearing the highest tier of industry clearance.

Julian leaned closer, resting his forearm against the console, his presence commanding the entire space.

"Tell me, June," Julian murmured, his voice rich with quiet challenge. "When you walk into that ballroom tonight, how do you plan to show up? As my invited creative partner... or as the studio head who brings the Mercer dynasty to their knees?"

I looked up from the contract and caught my reflection in the dark vanity glass above.

The tired, compliant housewife who had spent three years hiding in the shadows was gone. In her place were clear, unyielding eyes and a cold, razor-sharp focus.

A faint, dangerous smile touched my lips.

"I think," I said softly, "they've spent enough time standing."
