Chapter 4

The café was near campus. Sullivan went there Thursdays between lectures. Same table by the window. Same black coffee. Same stack of papers to grade.

Cassius was waiting when he arrived.

Sullivan stopped. Looked at him. Then walked to his usual table and sat down.

Cassius followed. Pulled out the chair across from him without asking.

"Professor Fisher." He said it like the title was something small. "I thought it was time we talked."

Sullivan set his bag down. Opened it. Pulled out his papers.

"Man to man," Cassius continued. He leaned back in his chair. Relaxed. Confident. "About Mikayla."

Sullivan uncapped his pen. Started reading the first paper.

Cassius smiled. "I know this must be awkward for you. Finding out about us. About what we had."

Sullivan made a mark in the margin. Turned the page.

"Four years," Cassius said. "We were together four years. Lived together. Planned a whole life. You know how it is when you're young and everything feels—" He paused. "Infinite."

Sullivan circled a sentence. Wrote a note.

"I'm not trying to make trouble," Cassius said. His voice dropped. Sincere now. "I just think you should understand the depth of what we shared. The history. She was my first real love. I was hers. That doesn't just disappear because time passes."

Sullivan finished the first paper. Set it aside. Started the second.

Cassius's jaw tightened. "I know what you're thinking. That I'm the one who left. That I made my choice. And you're right. I did. Worst mistake of my life." He leaned forward. "But don't you ever wonder? About what she's not telling you? About whether she's really moved on or just—" He gestured vaguely. "Settled?"

Sullivan looked up.

Cassius stopped talking.

Sullivan's eyes were calm. Flat. The kind of calm that makes people nervous without knowing why.

"She chose me," Sullivan said quietly. "Every morning for seven years, she has chosen me. I don't wonder about anything."

He capped his pen. Stood. Picked up both coffee cups—his and Cassius's—and walked to the counter.

He paid for both. Left a tip. Came back.

Cassius was still sitting there. Frozen.

Sullivan picked up his bag. "Enjoy your coffee."

Then he left.

Cassius sat alone at the table. Hands shaking. Face hot.

Forty minutes passed before he could stand.

---

The gala was black tie. Mikayla's firm had a table near the stage. Their pro bono work—a community center redesign—was featured in the program.

I wore navy. Simple. Sullivan's favorite.

Petra leaned over halfway through dinner. "Don't look now, but guess who just walked in."

I looked.

Cassius. Tuxedo. Chaya on his arm in something red and expensive.

Petra swore under her breath. "How did he—"

"Kennedy connections," I said. My voice was steady. "It's fine."

It wasn't fine.

He worked the room. Shook hands. Smiled. Made his way slowly toward our table.

Sullivan's hand found mine under the table. Squeezed once.

Cassius stopped beside my chair. "Mikayla. You look beautiful."

I looked up. "Cassius."

"I didn't know your firm was involved tonight. What a coincidence."

"Yes," I said. "What a coincidence."

Chaya stood slightly behind him. Her smile was thin. Her eyes were on me.

Cassius gestured to the program. "Community work. That's so like you. Always thinking about others." He glanced at Sullivan. "You're a lucky man, Professor."

Sullivan said nothing.

Cassius turned back to me. "Remember that brownstone project in Brooklyn? The one we toured together? You had so many ideas. I still think about that day."

Petra kicked me under the table.

I smiled. Polite. Empty. "I don't."

Cassius blinked.

"Excuse me," I said. I stood. Walked toward the terrace.

He followed.

I knew he would.

The terrace was cold. City lights below. Music muffled behind glass.

I stood at the railing. Waited.

Cassius came out. Closed the door behind him.

"Mikayla, please. Just listen."

I didn't turn around.

"I know I hurt you," he said. His voice cracked. "I know I destroyed everything. But I need you to understand—I was young. Stupid. I thought I could fix it later. I thought—" He stopped. "I never stopped loving you."

I turned around.

His face was wet. Real tears. Genuine pain.

I felt nothing.

"Seven years," he whispered. "Seven years I've thought about you every single day. Wondered where you were. What you were doing. If you were happy. And then I saw you at that park and I realized—"

"Realized what?"

"That we're not finished. That what we had doesn't just end because I made a mistake. That you still—"

"I don't."

He froze.

"I don't hate you," I said. "I don't love you. I don't think about you. You are nothing to me. Less than nothing. You are a closed door in a house I burned down and walked away from."

His mouth opened. Closed.

"My mother died calling your name," I said. My voice was flat. Final. "She thought you were family. She thought you would help. That is the last time I will ever speak that sentence to you."

I walked past him. Back inside.

Sullivan was standing in the doorway. He'd been watching.

He didn't ask. Didn't speak.

He just draped his jacket over my shoulders and took my hand.

We left.

---

In the car, I stared out the window. Silent.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then: "I need to rearrange the bedroom."

Sullivan glanced at me. Then he turned the car around.

We drove to the 24-hour furniture store on the edge of town. Bought nothing. Just looked. Touched things. Walked the aisles until my breathing evened out.

At home, we moved the bed. Then the dresser. Then the nightstand.

Gracie appeared in the doorway at 1 AM. Pajamas. Sleepy eyes.

"What are you doing?"

"Rearranging," I said.

"Can I help?"

Sullivan smiled. "Sure, sweetheart."

She pushed the nightstand with both hands. Serious. Focused.

By two, the room was different. Better.

We all climbed into the newly positioned bed. Gracie in the middle.

She fell asleep first. Then Sullivan.

I lay awake and stared at the ceiling.

The furniture was in new places.

But the weight in my chest was exactly where it had always been.
