9.7 / 10.0
A blindingly bright carnival should be a place of pure joy, but for one mother, the sweet scent of popcorn and cotton candy hides a chilling threat. As Sullivan carries little Gracie through the laughing crowds, an unsettling mystery begins to unravel beneath their perfect family facade. In this tense romance novel, the domestic bliss they cherish is about to shatter, plunging them into a web of dark secrets and dangerous, high-stakes obsession.

His Wife Kidnapped My Daughter Chapter 1

The sun was too bright. That's what I remember thinking when I saw him.

Gracie was on Sullivan's shoulders, her small hands tangled in his hair, pointing at the carousel like it was the most important thing in the world. "That one, Daddy! The horse with the pink flowers!" Her voice was pure sugar and sunlight. Sullivan nodded, patient as always, and started walking toward the ticket booth.

I was holding two cones of cotton candy, the paper sticky against my fingers. The air smelled like popcorn and sunscreen. Families everywhere. Kids screaming with laughter. Music from the rides. It was perfect. The kind of day I used to think was impossible.

Then I saw him.

He was standing near the carousel exit, maybe thirty feet away. Frozen. Staring straight at me.

Cassius Harrison.

Seven years collapsed into nothing. The cotton candy slipped from my hand. I didn't notice until later that the pink one landed on my shoe.

He looked older. Thinner in the face. His hair was still perfect, still that same expensive cut. He wore a white button-down with the sleeves rolled up, dark jeans, sunglasses pushed up on his head. He looked like a man on vacation. Like someone who belonged here.

But his eyes. God, his eyes were wrong. Wide and red-rimmed and fixed on me like I was something he'd lost and just found in a gutter.

I couldn't move.

Sullivan turned around, Gracie still giggling on his shoulders. "Mikayla? You okay?"

I didn't answer. Couldn't.

Cassius started walking toward me. Fast. People moved out of his way without knowing why.

"Mikayla." His voice cracked on my name. "Mikayla, wait—"

I stepped back. Sullivan's hand was on my elbow in an instant, steadying me. Gracie's laughter stopped.

"Mommy?"

Cassius reached us. He was breathing hard, like he'd been running. His hand shot out and grabbed my arm. Not hard. But firm. Possessive.

"Is she mine?" His eyes flicked to Gracie, then back to me. "Is she mine? She has your eyes, she has—"

I looked down at his hand on my arm. The same hand that used to hold mine on cold nights. The same hand that signed a marriage license to someone else while my mother was dying.

I slapped him.

Open palm. Hard enough that my hand stung. Hard enough that heads turned all around us. A woman gasped. A kid pointed.

Cassius's head snapped to the side. He touched his cheek, stunned.

"She is not yours," I said. My voice came out flat. Cold. "She has never been yours. She will never be yours."

He blinked. His mouth opened. Closed.

"Remove your hand," I continued, "before my husband does it for you."

Sullivan was already moving. He didn't touch Cassius. Didn't need to. He just stepped between us, one hand settling on Gracie's leg where she sat on his shoulders, the other reaching back for mine. His body was a wall.

"We're leaving," Sullivan said quietly. Not to Cassius. To me.

I took his hand. It was warm and solid and real.

We walked away.

Behind us, Cassius called my name. Once. Twice. His voice got louder, more desperate. People were staring now. A security guard started moving toward him.

I didn't look back.

In the car, Gracie was quiet for a long time. Sullivan drove. I sat in the passenger seat and watched the highway roll past and tried to remember how to breathe.

"Mommy?" Gracie's voice was small. "Who was that man?"

I turned around. She was buckled in her booster seat, her little face worried, her hands twisted in her lap.

I unbuckled and climbed into the back beside her. Sullivan glanced at me in the rearview mirror but said nothing.

I smoothed Gracie's hair. It was soft and warm from the sun. "Nobody, sweetheart. Just somebody who got lost."

"He made you angry."

"A little bit. But I'm not angry now."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

She leaned into me. I wrapped my arms around her and pressed my face into her hair. She smelled like cotton candy and baby shampoo.

Sullivan's eyes met mine in the mirror. He didn't ask questions. He never did.

That night, after Gracie fell asleep in the hotel bed between us, I sat on the edge of the mattress and stared at nothing. Sullivan made tea from the little kettle in the corner. He set the cup in my hands and sat beside me.

"He's not going to stop," I said.

Sullivan was quiet for a moment. Then: "I know."

I looked at him. His face was calm. But something behind his eyes had changed. Something sharp and cold and final.

I didn't sleep that night. Neither did he.

By morning, I had my armor back on. Showered, dressed, face composed. Sullivan watched me brush my hair in the mirror and said nothing.

We flew home.

Back in Seattle, I went straight to the studio. Petra took one look at me and brought coffee without asking. I buried myself in fabric swatches and floor plans. Measurements. Angles. Things I could control.

The delivery came on a Wednesday.

Petra brought it to my desk, frowning. A bolt of fabric. Deep blue. Midnight blue. The exact shade I used to love in college. No card. Just a handwritten note on cream paper.

*You always said this color reminded you of the sky before a storm. I remember.*

I recognized the handwriting before I finished reading.

My hands didn't shake. I folded the note once, set it on the desk, and looked up at Petra.

"Refuse all future deliveries from unknown senders," I said. "Return them. Don't sign for them. Don't bring them inside."

Petra's eyes went wide. "Mikayla—"

"Please."

She nodded slowly. Took the fabric and the note and left.

I turned back to my drafting table. Picked up my pencil. Drew a straight line.

My hand was perfectly steady.

But I could feel him out there. Somewhere. Watching. Waiting.

And I knew, with the cold certainty of someone who had already died once and climbed back out, that this was only the beginning.
