After My Mate Killed Our Son

9.4 / 10.0
Her twenty-fourth birthday brings no gift—only the agonizing snap of a mating bond as Elias ascends before the Shadowvale Pack, ending five years of waiting in one ceremonial heartbeat. But the bond's fracture is merely the prelude. When she loses their son, the devastation cuts deeper than any mark. Now, suspended between a shattered mate and a pack that turned away, she faces an impossible reckoning: what remains of her loyalty, her love, and her will to endure the wreckage.

After My Mate Killed Our Son Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on my twenty-fourth birthday.

I knew the exact moment because I was watching the clock above the Great Hall doors when Elias mounted the dais. The Shadowvale Pack filled every bench, every corner. Candlelight made the stone walls glow. I stood in the third row, hands folded, heart hammering against my ribs. Tonight. After five years, tonight he would finally complete the mark.

Elias's voice carried across the hall. Formal. Ceremonial.

"I, Elias, Alpha of Shadowvale, reject you, Wrenlee Parker, as my mate."

The half-mark on my neck went cold first. Then hollow. Like someone had scooped out the warmth and left ice in its place.

My wolf collapsed inside me.

Not slowly. Not with warning. One breath she was there—a second consciousness I'd carried since sixteen—and the next breath there was nothing. Just a void where she used to live. The silence was so absolute I couldn't breathe around it.

"—and claim Lila Robinson, whose wolf is dying, as my chosen mate. Only the Luna bond can save her."

The room blurred. My knees threatened to buckle. I pressed my palm flat against my sternum—the old habit, the one I never noticed until later—and forced air into my lungs. Every syllable of his vow burned like silver in my veins. The half-mark throbbed with each heartbeat, a cold ache that radiated down my spine.

Lila stepped onto the dais. She wore white. She leaned into Elias's side with practiced fragility, one hand pressed to her chest as if her wolf were struggling even now. The pack murmured. Sympathetic. Approving.

I looked at Helena in the front row. Elias's mother. The woman who had called my bloodline Omega-grade in front of visiting Alphas. She nodded once. Satisfied.

The pack's eyes found me. Waiting.

I could feel it—the expectation. The collective held breath. They wanted to see me break. To cry. To beg.

I reached for the glass of wine on the bench beside me. My hand did not shake. I raised it high enough for the candlelight to catch the crystal.

"Congratulations," I said.

My voice did not crack. Did not waver. It carried across the hall clear and final.

Then I turned and walked toward the doors.

The pack parted. No one spoke. No one moved to stop me. I kept my spine straight, my steps even. The cold half-mark pulsed with every footfall. The void where my wolf used to be screamed in silence.

I did not look back.

I pushed through the Great Hall doors and kept walking. Past the pack house. Past the training grounds. Past the border markers I had crossed five years ago believing I was coming home.

The night air bit at my skin. I made it to the tree line before my knees finally gave out.

I knelt in the dirt and pressed both hands against the ground. The half-mark burned cold. My wolf was gone. Five years. Five years of warming his bed, healing his warriors, running his household. Five years of waiting for him to finish what he started.

The nausea hit in waves. I curled forward, forehead against the earth, and tried to remember how to breathe without her.

A branch snapped behind me.

I looked up. Cressida Bell stood at the edge of the clearing. She was one of the pack warriors. I had stitched a gash across her ribs two months ago after a rogue skirmish. She stared at me for a long moment, her face unreadable.

Then she knelt.

Not the involuntary kind. The deliberate kind.

"You shouldn't be out here alone," she said quietly.

I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. "I'm fine."

"You're not." She stayed kneeling. "Let me walk you to the border. Your brother's pack is an hour north."

"I'm coming back tomorrow," I said. "I have things in the pack house."

Cressida's jaw tightened. "Then I'll come with you."

I shook my head. "You don't have to—"

"Yes," she said. "I do."

She helped me to my feet. We walked in silence to the main road where I had left my car. She waited until I was inside, engine running, before she stepped back.

"Be careful tomorrow," Cressida said through the window.

I nodded. I did not ask what she meant.

I drove to a motel thirty miles south. Paid cash. Locked the door. Sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall until the sun came up.

The half-mark stayed cold.

My wolf stayed silent.

At nine in the morning, I drove back to Shadowvale. I parked outside the pack house and walked through the front door with my shoulders back.

Lila was waiting in the foyer.

She smiled. Soft. Sympathetic.

"Wrenlee," she said. "I'm so sorry. I know this must be hard."

I looked at her. At the white dress she still wore. At the way she positioned herself at the top of the stone staircase—between me and the hall that led to the room where I had kept my things for five years.

"I just need to get my belongings," I said.

"Of course." Her voice was gentle. Practiced. "Take all the time you need."

I moved toward the stairs.

Footsteps echoed from the hall below. Heavy. Familiar.

Elias appeared at the base of the staircase.

He looked up. Saw me. Saw Lila.

Lila's eyes met mine for a single, crystalline second.

Then she screamed and threw herself down the stairs.
