Chapter 2

The doorbell rang at eight in the morning.

I was in the kitchen, packing Gracie's lunch. Turkey sandwich, apple slices, a juice box. Sullivan had already left for his early lecture. Gracie was upstairs brushing her teeth.

I opened the door.

Cassius stood on my porch holding a small velvet box.

For a moment, neither of us moved. He looked like he hadn't slept. His shirt was wrinkled. His eyes were bright and desperate.

"Mikayla." He said my name like a prayer. "I need you to listen."

I didn't close the door. Didn't step back. Just stood there and waited.

He opened the box. Inside was the ring. The original one. White gold band, single diamond, simple and perfect. The one I'd worn for six months before I threw it into a gutter on the worst night of my life.

"I kept it," he said. "I went back. I found it. I've had it cleaned every year. I knew—I always knew we weren't finished."

I looked at the ring. Then at him.

"Seven years ago," he continued, voice shaking, "I made a mistake. The worst mistake. I was young and stupid and I thought—" He stopped. Swallowed. "I thought I could fix everything later. I thought you'd wait. I thought—"

"You thought wrong."

He flinched. "I know. I know I did. But Mikayla, when I saw you at that park, when I saw your daughter, I realized—"

"She's not yours."

"I know. You said that. But it doesn't matter. Don't you see? It doesn't matter whose she is. What matters is that we had something real. Something that doesn't just disappear because time passed. You loved me. I loved you. That doesn't die."

I took the box from his hand.

His face lit up. Hope flooded his eyes like I'd just said yes to something.

I walked to the kitchen. He followed me to the doorway.

I opened the box. Took out the ring. Held it up to the light.

It was clean. Polished. Perfect. Like the last seven years had never happened.

I dropped it into the garbage disposal.

Cassius made a sound. Something between a gasp and a cry.

I flipped the switch.

The grinding was loud. Metal on metal. A high whine, then a crunch, then silence.

I turned it off. Looked at him.

"That sound?" I said. "That's what your apology is worth."

His face went white. "You—you can't—"

"I just did."

"Mikayla, please—"

"Leave."

"I came here to tell you—"

"Leave my house."

He stood there. Mouth open. Eyes wet.

I walked past him, opened the front door, and held it.

He didn't move for a long time. Just stared at me like I was something he'd never seen before.

Finally, he walked out.

I closed the door. Locked it. Stood with my back against it and watched through the window.

He stood on the porch. Staring at the door. His shoulders shook once. Then he turned and walked to his car.

I counted. Eleven minutes from the time I closed the door to the time his car pulled away.

Upstairs, Gracie called, "Mommy? I'm ready!"

I took a breath. Smoothed my hair. Walked to the stairs.

"Coming, sweetheart."

---

That night, Sullivan came home to find me in the living room moving furniture.

The sofa was three inches to the left. Then back. Then against the opposite wall.

He set his bag down. Looked at the room. Looked at me.

"Tea?" he asked.

"Sure."

He made it in the kitchen. Came back with two cups. Set mine on the side table—the one I'd just moved next to the window.

Then he sat on the floor. Opened his laptop. Pulled out a stack of papers.

I moved the armchair. Then the lamp. Then the bookshelf.

He graded papers. Typed something. Sipped his tea.

At ten-thirty, I sat on the sofa—now back against its original wall—and put my face in my hands.

Sullivan closed his laptop. Came and sat beside me.

He didn't ask what happened. Didn't ask what was wrong.

He just put his arm around me and waited.

"He came here," I said finally. "This morning."

Sullivan's arm tightened slightly. "I know."

I looked at him. "How?"

"Doorbell camera."

Of course. The camera Sullivan installed last year. The one I'd forgotten about.

"Why didn't you—"

"Because you handled it," he said quietly. "You always do."

I leaned into him. He smelled like coffee and old books.

"He's not going to stop," I whispered.

"I know."

"Sullivan—"

"I know."

We sat there until midnight. When we finally went upstairs, the furniture was exactly where it had started.

Across the city, in a hotel room that cost more per night than most people's rent, Cassius Harrison sat with a file folder open on the desk.

The private investigator's report. Twenty pages. Photographs. Financial records. Employment history.

Sullivan Fisher. Age thirty-six. Associate professor, University of Washington Computer Science Department. Salary: $78,000 per year. Vehicle: 2014 Subaru Outback. No criminal record. No family wealth. No trust fund. No hidden assets.

Cassius read it twice.

Then he smiled.

She settled, he thought. She was broken and desperate and she settled for the first kind man who offered her stability.

She's been performing happiness for seven years. Playing house with a nobody. Pretending it's enough.

But I know her. I know what she really wants. What she really deserves.

He closed the folder.

Outside, the city lights glittered. Distant. Cold. Beautiful.

He picked up his phone. Scrolled to the photo he'd kept as his wallpaper for seven years. Mikayla at twenty-two, laughing in the sun, her hair blowing across her face.

She's still mine, he thought. She just doesn't remember yet.

He'd make her remember.

Whatever it took.
