Chapter 2

The screen of my tablet glowed with my own ruined face.

"Top trend nationwide," my assistant, Nora, said, her voice shaking from the edge of the sofa. "Three million shares in four hours."

Below the headline sat leaked screenshots of messages I never sent.

*Liam, please don’t leave the hotel room. I bought the watch you liked. If you don't answer in ten minutes, I'll crash my car into your lobby.*

"Fabricated timestamps," I said, setting my coffee cup down with a sharp clatter. "A sophomore in computer science could fake these."

"The public doesn't care about metadata, Evelyn," my father barked through the speakerphone on the marble counter. "The board of directors is in an uproar. Our stock dipped four percent at market open! Four percent!"

"Liam orchestrated this, Father. Sophia was paid off, and those logs are fake."

"I don't care if the Pope wrote them!" Father roared. "Your public humiliation is costing this family real capital. Three brand partners terminated their endorsements before breakfast. Call a press conference. Read the statement my PR team drafted."

"What statement?"

"Admit you had an episode," he ordered without hesitation. "Say wedding stress triggered an emotional breakdown, apologize to Liam and his child, and announce you're checking into a wellness clinic in Switzerland for six months."

A bitter laugh broke from my chest. "You want me to validate his lie?"

"I want the stock price to stop bleeding! You fix this today, or I freeze your voting shares."

The call cut off with a flat click.

Nora looked down at the Persian rug. "Evelyn... two of your closest friends from the country club just removed you from their group chats. The gala committee revoked your host badge, too."

"Let them." I stood up, smoothing the front of my charcoal silk trousers. "Cowards save you the trouble of cutting them out yourself."

The front door chime sounded.

Nora flinched toward the hallway. "Security downstairs didn't call up."

"They wouldn't," I said coldly. "He still has the penthouse biometric pass."

Liam strolled into the living room as if he owned the title deed. He wore a tailored navy suit, his hair swept back, looking every bit the triumphant tech visionary Manhattan had fallen in love with. In his left hand, he held a glass of bourbon he must have poured from the bar in the foyer. In his right, between two fingers, rested a twisted circle of platinum.

The ring I had shattered on the cathedral floor.

"You dropped this yesterday," Liam said, tossing the warped metal onto the glass coffee table between us. It bounced with a dull ring. "Thought you might want a souvenir of your tantrum."

Nora shrank back. "I'll... give you two privacy."

"Stay where you are, Nora," I countered.

Liam offered a patronizing smirk, waving his hand toward the exit. "Leave us, Nora. Evelyn and I need to clean up her mess."

Nora darted out the front door, leaving the latch clicking shut behind her.

"What do you want, Liam?" I crossed my arms, fixing my stare on his polished shoes. "Enjoying your fifteen minutes of manufactured sympathy?"

"I’m here to offer you an olive branch." Liam took a sip of his bourbon. "The media wants blood. Sophia's lawyers are drafting a lawsuit for intentional infliction of emotional distress against our son. She’s terrified you'll use your family’s private investigators to harass them."

"You dragged that toddler into a cathedral to frame me, and you're calling *me* the threat?"

"Optics, Evelyn," Liam said, leaning his hip against the edge of the dining table. "Nobody cares about the truth when the lie is this entertaining. You look like a rich, unhinged heiress who tried to buy a man against his will."

"And your generous offer?"

"Issue a joint statement tonight," he said smoothly. "State that you misunderstood the nature of our business relationship. Acknowledge that you mistook professional gratitude for romantic affection, and that you respect my dedication to my real family. If you do that, I'll convince Sophia not to file charges."

I stared at him. Really stared at him.

Five years ago, Liam was operating out of an incubator space with three employees and two maxed-out credit cards. I paid off his business debt through an anonymous dummy fund. I introduced him to the tech venture capitalists who funded his Series A. I handed him his anchor retail contract by calling in a favor from my godfather.

I kept my name off every single document because he told me his ego couldn't handle being known as a kept man.

*Let me stand on my own two feet for you, Evie,* he used to whisper in the dark of my bed. *When we get married, I want everyone to know I earned the right to stand beside you.*

Every word had been poison wrapped in honey.

"You want me to tell the world I imagined five years of my life?" I asked softly.

"It's the cleanest way out for you," Liam replied, setting his glass on the counter. "Your father preserves his stock. You go to Europe for a few months, let the dust settle. I keep my reputation intact, and Sophia gets the quiet life she deserves."

I stepped toward him, my voice completely level. "So you're sure about this? Everything between us—every trip, every promise, every contract—it was all just my delusion? All completely one-sided?"

Liam didn't blink. His jaw set in cold, unyielding lines.

"Yes," he said, meeting my gaze without a shred of remorse. "It was entirely one-sided. You forced yourself into my life, Evelyn. I was merely surviving your obsession until I had the leverage to break free."

"Understood."

I pulled my personal phone from my pocket, unlocking it instantly. I brought up a contact labeled *Julian - Capital Management* and hit speaker.

The line rang once before a crisp voice answered.

"Good morning, Evelyn. I saw the morning news. Are we holding off?"

"No, Julian," I said, keeping my eyes locked on Liam’s smug face. "We're executing immediate protocol."

Liam's brow twitched. A faint crease formed between his eyebrows.

"Go ahead," Julian replied.

"Cancel the eighty-million-dollar post-nuptial liquidity transfer scheduled for Liam’s holding company at noon," I said evenly. "Reroute the funds back to my primary offshore trust."

Liam froze. The slight smirk on his lips vanished.

"Confirmed," Julian said. "And the portfolio partnerships?"

"Terminate every single one," I continued, speaking clearly into the microphone. "Pull the Ward Horizon Fund's backing from his cloud infrastructure rollout. Cancel our lease underwriting for his corporate headquarters in Hudson Yards. Call the debt on his expansion loan due within forty-eight hours, per the default clause regarding fraudulent misrepresentation."

"Evelyn?" Julian asked, pen scratching audibly over paper. "That will collapse his operating capital before Friday."

"Then let it collapse," I said. "Terminate it all."

"Understood. Starting the paperwork now."

I tapped the red end button and slipped the phone back into my pocket.

Silence suffocated the room.

Liam stared at me, his face pale, the veins along his neck suddenly bulging. The relaxed posture was gone. His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.

"Evelyn, are you out of your mind?" His voice cracked, the composed veneer shattering completely. "Those funds were already allocated! We announced the Hudson Yards headquarters to the press last week! You can't just pull the rug on a signed transition!"

"What transition?" I took two slow steps toward him. "You just told me we had no romantic relationship. That money was an earmarked marriage gift from my private estate to my husband. You aren't my husband, Liam. You're an independent vendor whose contracts I find redundant."

"That's eighty million dollars!" he yelled, lunging forward, his hands gripping the edge of the dining table until his knuckles went white. "You'll bankrupt my expansion phase! You'll destroy hundreds of jobs!"

"Then ask Sophia to cover it," I replied, my voice chillingly calm. "Or maybe Toby has an offshore trust you can raid."

"You spiteful bitch!" Liam snarled, stepping into my space. "You think you can play with my life's work because your feelings got hurt? I built that company with my bare hands!"

"You built it with my bank account," I said, reaching down to the glass table.

My fingers curled around the dented platinum band.

I walked straight up to his bourbon glass. Without a single word, I dropped the ruined ring into the amber liquor.

*Plink.*

It hit the heavy glass bottom, resting like dead weight beneath the ice cubes.

"You told the entire country I'm a crazy woman," I murmured, watching his eyes track the ring. "So take your own advice, Liam. Stay far away from crazy people."

Liam looked at the glass, then snapped his gaze up to mine, breathing hard, his jaw working as if he wanted to scream. But nothing came out. The harsh reality of his financial void was already setting in.

"Get out of my home," I commanded. "Before I have building security drag you through the lobby like the trespasser you are."

Liam swallowed hard. He didn't pick up the glass. He turned around, almost stumbling over the fringe of the rug, and wrenched the front door open before slamming it so hard the glass fixtures rattled overhead.

I stood alone in the quiet penthouse. My hands weren't shaking.

Six hours later, midnight struck across the Manhattan skyline.

I sat on the balcony, watching the city lights flicker beneath a blanket of low clouds, my tablet resting on my knees. A fresh push alert illuminated the dark glass:

*BREAKING: Apex Global Capital withdraws lead investment from Liam’s tech firm, citing sudden liquidity failure and lease insolvency. Shares plunge 42% in after-hours trading.*

A small, merciless smile touched my lips.

Then, an incoming call took over the screen. An unknown, encrypted number.

I swiped to accept.

"You move fast, Evelyn," a deep, unfamiliar baritone came through the receiver. "Now that you've crippled his company, do you want to finish the job, or are you going to let him recover?"
