His Mistress Crashed My Wedding With His Child
His Mistress Crashed My Wedding With His Child Chapter 1
The platinum wedding band felt heavy between my fingertips.
"Do you, Evelyn Ward, take Liam to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
The priest's voice echoed through the high stone arches of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. I turned slightly, glancing toward the arched side door. Liam had stepped away five minutes earlier, claiming an urgent business call couldn't wait.
"I—"
The heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral slammed open.
Every head in the pews snapped around. A woman pushed through the entrance, clutching a little boy in a navy blazer against her hip. Her hair was a tangled mess, her eyes red and streaming with mascara.
"Stop this!" she screamed. "Stop this wedding right now!"
The crowd gasped. Whispers surged through the rows like a brushfire.
"Who let her in?" my mother hissed from the front row. "Security!"
The woman didn't stop. She marched down the white runner, her sneakers squeaking against the polished marble. Before I could process the terror in her face, she was at the altar.
*Crack.*
The slap exploded against my left cheek. The blow knocked my veil askew, sending a burst of heat across my face.
"You stole him!" the woman shrieked, clutching the boy tighter as he began to wail. "Five years! You kept him away from his family for five whole years! You knew about us, you homewrecker!"
My ears rang. My fingers touched my stinging skin. "What are you talking about? Who are you?"
"I'm Sophia!" she sobbed, addressing the crowd of Manhattan's elite. "And this is Liam's son! You trapped him with your father’s money! You tore our family apart!"
Right on cue, the toddler pointed a chubby finger toward the main aisle.
"Daddy!" the boy piped up, his voice cutting through the cavernous hall. "Daddy, up!"
My heart dropped into my stomach.
Liam stood at the back of the aisle. His black tuxedo was pressed to perfection, not a single hair out of place. He wasn't rushing. He didn't look confused. He walked forward with an eerie, steady calm.
"Liam," I said, stumbling toward the altar steps. My voice cracked under the weight of the room's collective stare. "Tell security to remove her. She’s claiming—"
Liam didn't even look at me.
He walked straight past my outstretched hand. He reached Sophia, bent down, and swept the boy into his arms. The child buried his wet face into Liam’s shoulder.
"It's okay, Toby," Liam murmured softly. "Daddy's here."
The breath slammed out of my lungs.
"Liam?" I grabbed his sleeve. "What is this? What are you doing?"
Liam pulled his arm away as if my lace glove carried poison. He stepped in front of Sophia, shielding her with his body.
"Don't touch me, Evelyn," he said, loud enough for the microphone near the pulpit to pick up every syllable.
"Explain this," I demanded, anger finally cutting through the fog. "Who is that child?"
"He's my son," Liam announced to the entire cathedral.
Gasps rippled across the pews. Cameras started flashing as guests pulled out their phones.
"You're lying," I whispered, shaking my head. "We’ve been together for five years. We lived together. You proposed in Paris!"
"I never proposed because I loved you," Liam said, his tone utterly flat. "I proposed because you left me no choice. You’ve been obsessed with me since college, Evelyn. You suffer from erotomania."
A dead silence fell over the room.
"What did you just say?"
"You heard me," Liam continued, turning to face the guests. "You twisted our families' business ties to back me into a corner. You threatened to ruin my firm if I walked away. You fabricated an entire romance in your head and bullied everyone around you to play along."
"You bastard!" My father surged out of the front pew, his face purple. "How dare you speak to my daughter like that!"
"Sit down, Arthur," Liam snapped without flinching. "The contracts were signed yesterday. Your leverage is gone."
My hands shook violently. I yanked my phone from the hidden pocket inside the voluminous skirt of my gown. My fingers scrambled across the glass screen.
"I fabricated it?" I shoved the glowing screen inches from Liam’s nose. "Look at this! Last night at midnight—'Can't wait to see my gorgeous bride in white.' Two weeks ago in the Hamptons! Three weeks ago, shopping for nursery furniture! Are you calling this a delusion?"
Liam glanced down at the screen with utter disdain.
"Those were scraps," he said coldly. "Words meant to placate a lunatic until I could get Sophia and my son out of the country safely. You were unstable. If I didn't feed your fantasy, you threatened to destroy everything."
"That is a lie!" I screamed. "You looked me in the eye this morning and told me you loved me!"
"Because you're crazy, Evelyn." Sophia choked out a sob behind him, pressing her face against his shoulder blades. "You forced him into this! He told me how you locked him in your apartment when he tried to pack his bags!"
"I never did that!" I stared at the sea of faces in the chapel. Friends I had known for a decade were covering their mouths. Society columnists were rapidly typing on their phones. Red recording dots gleamed from dozens of raised screens.
Nobody looked at me with sympathy. They looked at me like I was a monster. A pathetic, wealthy psycho who bought a man and kept him caged.
Liam reached up to his lapel. With quick, cold motions, he unpinned the white rose boutonnière. He let it drop to the carpet.
"I’m done pretending," Liam said, resting his hand on Sophia's waist. He turned his back on the altar, guiding her toward the aisle with their son perched on his arm.
"Liam!" I yelled, taking a step down the altar. "Look at me!"
He paused at the edge of the platform. He glanced over his shoulder, his eyes devoid of any warmth we had shared over the last five years.
"The person I actually wanted to marry," Liam said clearly, "was never you."
He walked away.
Sophia leaned into his side, wiping fake tears as the boy giggled, pulling on Liam's lapels. The heavy oak doors swung open, flooding the aisle with bright afternoon sunlight, and swallowed all three of them.
The cathedral erupted.
Hushed laughter broke out in the back rows. Shutter clicks filled the cavernous room like swarming locusts. My mother was weeping into her hands, while my father argued frantically with security guards who hadn't moved an inch.
*Ding.*
*Ding.*
My phone buzzed in my palm. A trending notification popped up: *#WardWeddingMeltdown: Heiress Exposed as Deranged Stalker at Altar.*
A short, dry sound escaped my throat. A laugh.
My father froze, staring up at me. "Evelyn?"
I didn't cry. The hot sting on my cheek had gone cold, replaced by an absolute, freezing clarity. Every gift, every soft promise, every late-night conversation—it was all a transaction to him. A setup to ruin me publicly while securing my family's assets.
I looked down at the velvet box sitting on the silver tray beside the priest. The diamond ring gleamed under the stained-glass light.
I picked it up.
"Evelyn, darling, let's get you inside," my mother cried, reaching for me. "Don't let them film this!"
I ignored her. I raised my arm high above my head.
With everything I had, I hurled the two-million-dollar ring directly against the hard marble steps.
The diamond shattered against the stone, the platinum band bouncing violently before rolling into the front pew.
"Fine, Liam," I said, my voice ringing steady and lethal across the silent room. "I'm not marrying you."
I gathered the heavy train of my dress in one fist, turned around, and walked toward the vestry door. But as I grabbed the brass handle, my phone buzzed again with a private number.
A single text flashed on the screen:
*He thinks he took everything from you today. Check your offshore accounts before you leave the building.*
