Chapter 3

My phone started ringing at seven in the morning.

"Evelyn, pick up the damn phone!" Liam’s voice shredded through the speaker the second I tapped accept. "Did you call the board behind my back?"

I took a sip of hot black tea. "I don't need to call them, Liam. Your numbers speak for themselves."

"Vertex Logistics just terminated our fulfillment contract," he spat, breathing so hard I could hear the static on his mic. "Northeastern Rail pulled out thirty minutes ago. These were independent enterprise accounts! You had no right to touch them!"

"Independent?" A low laugh slipped past my lips. "Did you genuinely believe a twenty-eight-year-old founder with zero shipping infrastructure landed Northeastern Rail on merit alone?"

Silence stretched over the line. Heavy, suffocating silence.

"What are you saying?" he muttered.

"My uncle sits on their executive committee," I said. "Vertex Logistics was founded by my mother's former roommate. They signed with you because I personally guaranteed your performance bonds with my own capital."

"You... you lied to me." His voice cracked, the anger suddenly drowned by pure disbelief. "You told me they chose us after the pitch."

"I let you believe you were a visionary because your ego couldn't stomach the truth," I said. "Now they know the marriage is off. Naturally, they withdrew their courtesy."

"Evelyn, wait—"

I hung up.

Nora stood across the kitchen island, clutching an iPad against her chest. "The board of his holding company called an emergency session an hour ago. Two venture partners threatened to force his resignation if he can't plug the cash deficit by Friday."

"He won't plug it," I replied, setting the cup down. "Is the press package ready?"

"Ready and verified by legal."

"Post it."

By noon, the internet belonged to us.

I didn't publish an emotional rant. I published cold, documented history.

A link titled *Five Years: A Timeline* went live across my verified accounts. It contained high-resolution scans of the lease we co-signed in Tribeca four years ago. Bank transfers showing my joint contributions to his mother's surgery bills. Family holiday photographs in Aspen, spanning three consecutive Christmases, with his arm wrapped around my waist while my parents toasted us across the table.

At the bottom lay the coup de grâce: the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral contract, signed fourteen months prior by Liam’s own hand, complete with a six-figure non-refundable deposit.

The comments erupted instantly.

*Wait... if she was stalking him, why is his signature on a church contract from last summer?*

*Look at the photos with his parents! He introduced her to his entire family years ago!*

*He lied. He set her up at the altar to take her cash and run.*

"Trending number one globally," Nora reported, her eyes glued to the live analytics. "The sentiment index swung seventy percent in your favor in under two hours."

Then came Sophia.

At three o'clock, Sophia launched an unannounced livestream. She sat on a threadbare sofa, cradling Toby against her chest. Tears ran down her cheeks, smudging dark eyeliner across her nose.

"Evelyn is using her wealth to distort the narrative!" Sophia cried into her phone camera, stroking the boy’s head as he squirmed. "She’s erasing me! I was with Liam first! Toby and I spent years living in the shadows because she controlled his bank accounts! He stayed with her only to protect us! How can Manhattan society support a monster who wants to leave a child homeless?"

Toby began to whimper on cue. The chat feed turned into a chaotic blur of arguing viewers.

Nora looked at me nervously. "Do you want to release the private investigator's dossier on her? We have the bank logs proving Liam bought her that suburban condo last year."

"No," I answered, standing up from my desk. "Never wrestle with a pig in the mud. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it."

"Then what do we do?"

"We move forward," I said. "Confirm my attendance at the Vanguard Annual Gala tonight. Tell the organizers Ward Capital is reclaiming our reserved table."

Nora’s eyes widened. "You're going out? Tonight?"

"I paused my career for five years to build Liam's empire," I said, fastening a pair of diamond studs into my ears. "Playtime is over."

***

The ballroom of the Plaza Hotel shimmered under crystal chandeliers.

Billionaires, foreign dignitaries, and industry titans mingled over flutes of vintage champagne. When I walked through the double doors wearing an emerald silk gown with an open back, the chatter in the foyer died down to a hush. Heads turned. Eyes darted.

I greeted my former mentors with easy smiles, accepting their polite nods as if yesterday’s scandal had never occurred.

Near the central fountain, a commotion drew my gaze.

Liam stood there, clutching a glass of scotch. Sophia clung to his arm, looking visibly uncomfortable in an ill-fitting, ruffled blush gown that screamed off-the-rack. Liam was talking animatedly to a senior partner from a private equity group, forcing a broad, confident smile.

He had brought her here to display strength. To prove to high society that he was unbothered, thriving, and happily united with his "true love."

Then Liam caught sight of me.

His smile vanished instantly. His posture stiffened, his fingers tightening around the crystal tumbler so hard I thought the glass would shatter. Sophia noticed his distraction, glanced in my direction, and shrank behind his shoulder.

I didn't even acknowledge them. I turned toward the dais.

The head table at the Vanguard Gala was reserved for global power brokers—the tier of capital that viewed men like Liam as disposable ants. In the center of that table sat Alexander Mercer.

He was thirty-two, the youngest managing director of Mercer Global, controlling sovereign wealth funds that rivaled small nations. He wore a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his features sharp, his steel-gray eyes observing the crowded room with absolute indifference.

Until his gaze found mine.

The ambient chatter seemed to fade as Alexander pushed his chair back.

He stood up.

He didn't signal an aide. He didn't wait for the protocol director. Alexander descended the steps of the dais, walking straight through the center of the ballroom. Conversations died in his wake. Guests parted like water, murmuring in shock.

He stopped directly before me.

"Good evening, Evelyn," his deep baritone carried across the quiet perimeter.

"Alexander," I greeted smoothly.

He extended an arm, gesturing toward the head table. "Your seat has been waiting."

Alexander turned, guiding me up the three carpeted steps to the dais. With an effortless motion, he pulled out the high-backed velvet armchair beside his own and waited for me to sit.

A wave of sharp gasps rippled across the nearest tables.

To Manhattan’s elite, an endorsement from Alexander Mercer wasn't just a gesture—it was an untouchable shield.

I took my seat, smoothing the silk across my knees. "Thank you."

"A pleasure," he murmured, taking his place beside me. "Your work on the offshore liquidation this morning was exceptionally clean."

Across the floor, Liam looked like he had been struck by lightning.

His face was flushed an ugly, mottled red. Sophia was whispering frantically into his ear, tugging at his jacket, but he completely ignored her. He stared at me, then at Alexander, his mouth slightly open in profound shock.

Twenty minutes later, I excused myself from the table to take a call on the terrace.

The night air was crisp, carrying the distant hum of traffic along Fifth Avenue. Just as I lowered my phone, heavy footsteps approached rapidly from the marble corridor.

"Evelyn!"

I didn't turn around.

Liam marched onto the terrace, his tie loosened, his eyes bloodshot with fury. He reached out, his hand lunging toward my wrist.

I stepped back cleanly, letting his fingers grasp empty air.

"Don't touch me," I warned, my tone sharp as a razor.

"What is this?" Liam snarled, stepping into my path, his chest heaving. "Alexander Mercer? You've been seeing him? Since when does Mercer even look at tech portfolios, let alone pull chairs for people?"

I looked at him, completely impassive.

"Did you set this up while we were together?" he demanded, his voice rising, erratic and raw. "Is that why you pulled the rug on my funding so fast? What's your relationship with him?"

I tilted my head, looking at his frantic, unraveling face.

"Does that have anything to do with you?"

Liam flinched as if I had struck him. "Evelyn, you owe me an answer! I built that company, and you—"

A shadow fell over the marble floor behind him.

"She doesn't owe you a syllable," a quiet, dangerous voice cut through the dark.
