He Toasted the Dog’s Owner After My Daughter’s Death Chapter 1

One month before the wedding, my daughter Lily was bitten by a dog and hospitalized, remaining in a coma. The dog’s owner was Daniel Walker’s assistant.

Daniel arrived at the hospital with his assistant, his face full of impatience.

“She was too careless,” he said. “So young and already causing trouble. She had to tease the dog, so she deserved to get bitten.”

His assistant, Olivia Brooks, put on a false look of apology, but her eyes flashed with provocation at me.

My anger burned. Lily was the victim, yet in Daniel’s mouth she became the culprit.

“Children can’t be spoiled. A painful lesson teaches them to be careful next time. I have to fly abroad for a project. Watch her closely after she’s discharged and don’t let her tease dogs again!”

I looked at Daniel, my gaze frighteningly calm.

“Lily needs her father. Can’t you stay?”

“Of course not!”

“Stop using Lily as an excuse. Don’t worry, I’ll be back in time to give you the grand wedding I promised.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

Nothing more would ever happen between us. He could marry his assistant.

An hour after Daniel left with Olivia, Lily’s condition suddenly worsened. She didn’t survive.

She was gone forever.

Looking at her small body covered in dozens of bloody tears and gashes, I couldn’t understand—how could a dog attack her so viciously? This wasn’t an accident.

I texted Daniel immediately, but there was no reply.

After that, I moved like a puppet on strings, numb, arranging Lily’s funeral step by step.

A parent burying a child—my poor girl was only five. She never got to see the beauty of the world, only its cruelty.

Just days earlier, she had been eagerly waiting for our wedding, excited to finally have a father in name as well as in life. Now she would never see it.

At the funeral, I fainted from grief several times, while my parents cursed Daniel bitterly.

We had a child before marriage and were about to wed, yet even then, with Lily dead, Daniel should have come.

I had texted and called him, but my messages went unanswered, my calls never connected.

I consoled myself: he was busy with a project, he would come as soon as he could.

But the funeral ended. The first day passed. Then the second. I stayed by Lily’s grave, unwilling to leave, just wanting to be close to my baby.

Then my phone buzzed. I opened it and saw Olivia’s new post on social media.

In the video, Daniel was dressed in a suit, holding flowers, kneeling before Olivia’s skirt. A lavish birthday cake sat beside them, the atmosphere festive and warm.

The sight struck me like lightning. My chest felt crushed, suffocated.

So his trip abroad for a “project” had really been to celebrate Olivia’s birthday, while my daughter lay in ashes.

Life and death—what a cruel contrast.

I was a fool. Still making excuses for him.

It had always been one-sided. I had knelt too long, forgotten how to stand.

“Lily, it’s over between me and Daniel. A man like him doesn’t deserve to be your father.”

Before she died, Lily had called for her daddy in her coma, but he never came.

Daniel wasn’t worth it.

After graduation, I joined the Walker Group, his family’s corporation. He was the CEO; I was just a small-town girl from Ohio.

I always felt inferior before him.

But he pursued me relentlessly, swearing he would marry me even if it cost him his position.

We fell into a secret relationship. I got pregnant.
