The Ex Behind My Wedding Camera

9.5 / 10.0
Sophie Mercer built a secure life in Boston with her fiancé, Andrew. But her peaceful world shatters when Andrew hires Julian—the renowned photographer Sophie abandoned seven years ago while secretly pregnant. Julian mistakenly believes she left him for wealth. As Andrew arranges secret meetings and the wedding shoots recreate their most intimate memories, Sophie must expose her deepest secrets before four people marry the wrong partners.

The Ex Behind My Wedding Camera Chapter 1

I hid a pregnancy from Julian because I wanted to surprise him with the ultrasound after his first award nomination.

A taxi crash took our baby at eleven weeks and left a scar across my abdomen.

His mother showed me a fertility report and swore Julian wanted three children.

So I vanished before he could sacrifice his future for me.

Seven years later, Andrew promised that two people could still be a family.

He gave me a Beacon Hill home, an eight-month engagement, and a wedding date circled in gold.

I thought marrying him would make seven years of silence feel like a choice.

Then Andrew hired the most expensive wedding photographer in Boston.

Julian walked into our engagement shoot and found my best angle without asking.

During the underwater session, my gown dragged me down.

Julian pulled me out and pressed air into my lungs as Andrew's hot chocolate shattered beside us.

“You knew she'd be in the water.”

“I planned a photograph, not this.”

“Then stop looking at my fiancée like she's still yours.”

“Ask Sophie whose name she tried to say.”

"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars for a photographer?" I asked, pushing the parchment contract across my desk. It slid right over the Beacon & Quill editorial proofs I had been correcting all morning.

"A Whitmore wedding requires the best," Andrew said. He capped his gold pen and dragged a thick line through the local female photographer's name I had chosen. "I already signed J. Vale."

"I edit books for a living, Andrew. We don't need to shoot our marriage like a commercial real estate brochure."

"We are doing this right, Sophie. The venue is booked, the guests are flying in, and the photos will reflect our standing." He smoothed the lapel of his tailored suit, unbothered by my frustration.

Eight months ago, he had used that same calm, practical tone when he proposed. He had placed my old medical file on the dining table—the one highlighting my under five percent chance of natural conception.

"We can still build a family," he had told me then. "I can provide the stability you need."

He turned safety into a strict schedule. He had circled October eighteenth with that same gold pen, making our future a timeline that couldn't be undone.

"Whatever you prefer," I said now. I deleted my own objection the same way I edited out an author's rawest paragraphs.

Two hours later, the metal door of the South End studio swung open.

A tall man stepped into the glaring white light of the room. He pulled off his sunglasses, ignoring Andrew, who stood waiting by the backdrop.

"Chin up two degrees," he said. His voice carried the same gravelly pitch it had seven years ago. "Don't hide your left shoulder."

I didn't need to read the signature on the contract anymore. J. Vale was Julian.

"Stand by the frosted window, Andrew," Julian ordered, grabbing a silver reflector.

For the next thirty minutes, Julian barely spoke to me, yet he anticipated my every flaw. Before my shoulders could stiffen under the bright flashes, he dimmed the overhead strobes. He circled to my left, avoiding the right-side profile I always hated. When my fingers started to claw nervously at the seams of my silk skirt, he stepped forward and shoved a bouquet of white peonies into my hands.

"Hold these," he instructed, his fingers brushing the back of my knuckles. "Keep your grip loose."

Andrew stood just outside the frame, watching the silent choreography. By the sixth setup, he crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. "You two seem like old friends."

"A friend's brother," I lied instantly, staring at the blinding flashbulb to avoid looking at either of them. "We met once, seven years ago."

The shutter snapped three times in rapid succession. Click. Click. Click.

Julian lowered the camera to his chest. His expression remained cold. "Her memory always excelled at editing."

Andrew stepped into the frame. He slid his hand around my waist, his thumb pressing hard into the tense muscle just above my hip. "Is that so?"

Through the camera's digital viewfinder, I caught a glimpse of Julian's eye. A violent flash of memory hit me. A silver six-by-eight picture frame I never got to give him. A ten-week ultrasound tucked inside. Then, the screech of tires, the cab crash a week later, and the loss of the eleven-week baby. All that remained was a fourteen-thousand-dollar hospital bill and a doctor telling me my fertility had dropped below five percent. The surprise I had planned to tell Julian never made it out of my mouth.

"Next setup," Andrew announced, his thumb digging deeper into my side. "The underwater concept."

"No." Julian swapped his lens with a sharp click. "The dress weighs twenty pounds dry. She won't float."

"The contract includes full compliance with my creative direction," Andrew countered. He walked over to the catering table, poured two cups of hot cocoa, and set them carefully on the edge of the six-foot-deep heated pool. "Get in the water, Sophie."

I couldn't swim in fabric. My chest tightened at the sight of the deep water, but I stepped down the submerged stairs anyway. The water swallowed the tulle, instantly dragging at my legs.

Julian crouched at the edge of the pool, bringing the lens inches from my face. "You always were an expert at disappearing when people needed an explanation," he whispered, his voice cutting under the splashing filter. "Jumping into a luxury car and leaving the broke photographer behind."

The words luxury car hit me like a physical blow. A black car. Elaine bleeding on the concrete driveway. The insults I swallowed and never fought back against. I kept my mouth shut now, just like I did then.

"Turn around," Julian commanded loudly for Andrew to hear.

I took another step backward. The soaked crinoline wrapped tightly around my calves like a weighted net.

I lost my footing.

Water rushed into my mouth. I thrashed, my hands clawing at the empty water, but the dress dragged me down. The chlorinated surface broke above my head. I sank twice, my lungs burning as panic set in.

A splash vibrated through the pool.

Julian didn't even take off his shoes. He abandoned the sixty-thousand-dollar camera on the wet tiles and plunged in. Strong arms hooked under my armpits, hauling me upward. Air hit my face. I choked, my vision blacking out as he dragged me to the shallow steps.

He forced me onto the wet marble, tilting my head back.

I gagged, coughing up pool water. The harsh taste of chlorine burned my throat, and a broken sound tore from my lips. "Ju—"

I stopped myself before the rest of his name came out.

I opened my eyes. Julian knelt over me, his white button-down shirt soaked and clinging to his chest. One of his hands supported the back of my neck. His other hand rested flat against my bare collarbone, tracking the erratic thumping of my heart. I lay there shivering, unable to push him away.

A paper cup tipped over. Steaming hot cocoa spilled across the white marble, pooling near Julian's wet knee.

Andrew grabbed the second cup and hurled it at the wall. The brown liquid splattered across the pristine paint. He lunged forward, shoving Julian hard in the shoulder.

"Get away from her," Andrew snapped. He stripped off his suit jacket and wrapped it around my trembling shoulders.

Julian stumbled back half a step, but his dark eyes never left my face. Water ran down his jaw. "You knew she'd be in the water. You knew the weight of that dress."

"I planned a photograph, not this," Andrew said, his voice dangerously low.

Andrew stooped down and scooped me into his arms. He stood tall, glaring down at Julian, whose hand was still extended, fingers twitching as if he wanted to grab my convulsing left leg.

"Then stop looking at my fiancée like she's still yours," Andrew said.

Julian finally lowered his arm. He stared straight at my face, watching me cough out the last bit of water.

"Ask Sophie whose name she tried to say," Julian replied.

Andrew's arms clamped around my ribs like a vice, the pressure sharp enough to bruise.
