Chapter 1

For twenty years, I was the invisible wife in this house. Neglected, unheard, unseen. But today, on my fiftieth birthday, I thought maybe they finally remembered me.

I saw it lying on my bed: a beautiful red dress from the Audrey Hepburn collection. I’d wanted this for years. I held the delicate fabric to my chest, imagining myself stepping out of the shadows for once. My heart fluttered like I was sixteen again.

I slipped it on carefully, trembling fingers pulling up the zipper. It hugged my hips, even if they were softer than they used to be. I turned to the mirror.

Then the door slammed open. Mike stood there, eyes narrowing. “Why the hell are you wearing that?” His voice sliced through my hope.

I stammered, “I… I thought it was for me. It’s my birthday and—”

He barked out a laugh so cruel it made my skin crawl. “For you? Are you insane? That’s for Sasha. She’s wearing that at her party tomorrow. Take it off!”

I felt my throat close up. “But… I’ve wanted this for so long. Just this once—”

He crossed the room in two strides, fists clenched. “You ruin everything. Look at you—fat and pathetic. You tore the zipper. This doesn’t even suit you.”

I swallowed my shame. “You know I overeat because of the stress. Maybe I could destress if you finally buy that Disneyland ticket you promised me twenty years ago? Maybe I could—”

“Disneyland?” Mike scoffed, his lip curling. “What are you, a child?”

A low chuckle came from the doorway. Nico. My best friend since we were kids, Mike’s younger brother, the one who’d promised we’d grow old together—never leave each other behind. He used to make me feel like I belonged here. But that was before Sasha slithered into our lives. Mike’s secretary—my so-called friend. She’d stolen them both, my husband and my best friend, right from under me while I smiled and called her sister.

Nico’s eyes glinted as he stepped inside. “Karylle, stop dreaming. You don’t even contribute anything to this house. Why not be like Sasha? She doesn’t need anyone. She’s smart, independent, and successful. You? You’re just… nothing.”

My lips trembled. “That’s not fair, I—”

“Shut up!” Mike barked, his face red. “Take that off! It will never suit you!” He yanked the dress so violently the seams popped, my skin burning where the fabric scraped me raw. I stumbled, clutching the torn silk, feeling more naked than I’d ever been.

“Look what you’ve done!” Mike snarled. “It’s ruined. Sasha can’t wear this now—it’s trash, just like you!” He flung the dress at my face.

Nico tossed his platinum card at my feet. “Go find her the same dress. Don’t even think about coming back until you do.”

Tears blurred my vision. “That’s impossible. It’s a limited edition—”

Mike smirked, stepping closer. “Exactly. So don’t ever come back, you useless waste of space.”

They left me there, clutching the shredded silk to my chest like it could hold me together. I heard the patter of tiny feet behind me.

“Grandma!” my granddaughter Micah yelled, slamming her bottle onto the floor. Milk splashed across the polished wood. “This doesn’t taste good! Make me another one!” She scowled like a tiny queen scolding her worthless servant.

The humiliation lodged in my throat like a shard of glass. “I’m not your maid, Micah. Ask your father.”

She burst into tears, running off. Seconds later, Maureen, my daughter, stormed in. Her eyes were cold, the same eyes that used to search for me when she was afraid of the dark.

“Did you just make my daughter cry? What kind of grandma are you?”

Mike appeared again, rage rippling through his jaw. “You’re nothing but a disappointment. I regret marrying you every single day.” He grabbed my arm so hard I whimpered, dragging me through the hallway like a piece of trash.

Outside, he shoved me so hard I fell, my ankle twisting beneath me. The dog barked in the filthy kennel beside me. The stench of old poop and mud clung to my dress. Mike towered over me, spitting out the final blow.
