Following a grueling year of intensive therapy and hard-won recovery, a resilient woman steps into a sleek office building to reclaim her life. In this intense modern novel, she must face a terrifying question: can she truly break free from her toxic marriage, or will her ex-husband's obsessive reach ruin her new beginnings?

My Ex-Husband Ruined Every Man Who Wanted Me Chapter 1

The building smelled new. Glass and steel and something chemical from the carpet. I stood in the lobby on Monday morning with my bag over my shoulder and told myself this was the reset I'd earned. One year of therapy, meal prep, morning runs along the waterfront. One year of building a person who didn't flinch when someone said the word husband.

The elevator was empty. I watched the numbers climb and felt something like hope.

The project division was on the ninth floor. Open plan, lots of light. A woman with box braids and a coffee mug that said NEVERTHELESS looked up from her desk as I approached.

"Margot Reed?" she asked.

"That's me."

"Sandra Okafor. I'm the senior project lead. They stuck you next to me, so congratulations or condolences depending on how this goes." She stood and shook my hand. Her grip was firm. "You drink coffee?"

"Only if it's good."

"Then you're going to hate the break room." She pointed to a desk by the window. "That's you. I'll give you the tour after you've had a chance to breathe."

I set my bag down. The chair was new. The computer monitor still had the plastic film on the corners. I peeled it off slowly, smoothing the edges, and felt the tightness in my chest loosen just a little.

Maybe this would be okay.

At 11:47 a.m., a company-wide email arrived.

**Subject: Welcome to Our New General Manager – Project Division**

I skimmed it. Corporate language. Excited to announce. Proven track record. All-hands meeting at 2:00 p.m. in Conference Room A.

The name didn't register. I was already thinking about lunch.

Sandra leaned over the partition. "You coming to the dog and pony show?"

"The what?"

"New GM. They're making us sit through a welcome speech." She rolled her eyes. "Probably some guy who'll talk about synergy for twenty minutes."

I smiled. "Wouldn't miss it."

At 1:55 p.m., I followed Sandra into Conference Room A. It was packed. I took a seat in the fourth row, near the aisle. Sandra sat beside me and opened her phone.

The room smelled like coffee and dry-erase markers. Someone laughed too loud in the back. I crossed my legs and waited.

At exactly 2:00 p.m., the glass door opened.

Clayton Henderson walked in.

The air left my lungs.

He looked different. Sharper. His suit was tailored, charcoal gray, no tie. His hair was shorter. He moved like someone who knew exactly how much space he was allowed to take up and took it without asking.

He reached the front of the room and turned.

His eyes found mine immediately.

Not scanning the crowd. Not a coincidence.

He knew.

He knew I was here.

"Good afternoon," he said. His voice was calm. Steady. "I'm Clayton Henderson, and I'll be leading the project division starting today."

I couldn't move. My hands were locked on the armrests.

He smiled. Not at me. At the room. Professional. Warm enough to be disarming.

"I know transitions can be disruptive," he continued. "So I'll keep this brief. I'm here to support your work, not micromanage it. My door is open. Literally. I don't believe in closed-door policies."

Someone in the front row laughed.

I stared at the back of their head and tried to breathe.

"I'm looking forward to working with all of you," Clayton said. His gaze swept the room again, passing over me without pausing. "Let's build something worth being proud of."

Applause. Polite, scattered.

I stood before he finished speaking and walked out.

The restroom was empty. I locked myself in the far stall and pressed my forehead against the cool tile wall.

This wasn't happening.

This couldn't be happening.

I built a whole year on the foundation that I would never have to see him again.

When I finally returned to my desk, there was an email waiting.

**From:** Clayton Henderson

**To:** Project Division – All Staff

**Subject:** Welcome

*Thank you for the warm reception this afternoon. I'm excited to collaborate with such a talented team. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or ideas you'd like to discuss. Looking forward to working with you all.*

*Best,*

*Clayton Henderson*

*General Manager, Project Division*

I read it three times.

It was perfectly normal. Perfectly professional.

I hated it.

Sandra appeared at my desk with two mugs. "Told you the coffee was bad." She set one in front of me. "You okay? You bolted out of there like the building was on fire."

"I'm fine."

"Uh-huh." She sipped her coffee and studied me. "You know him?"

"No."

"Okay." She didn't believe me. "Well, he seems competent. Could be worse."

I nodded and stared at my screen.

Over the next two days, Clayton treated me exactly like everyone else. Group emails. Team meetings. Polite nods in the hallway.

He never singled me out. Never lingered. Never gave anyone a reason to think we'd ever met before.

And somehow, that was worse than anything he could have said.
