When His Mistress Called Thugs on the Real Wife Chapter 1

The Porsche made a sound like money when it pulled into my driveway. I was in the garden, pulling weeds from the tomato beds, dirt under my nails and sun on my neck. The engine cut. I straightened slowly and watched him step out.

Damian Payne.

Eight years had put polish on him. Expensive haircut. Designer sunglasses. A watch that caught the light like a threat. He looked around my farmhouse — the weathered porch, the vegetable rows, the chicken coop — and his mouth curved into something that wasn't quite a smile.

The passenger door opened. A woman unfolded herself from the seat, all long legs and red-soled heels that had no business on gravel. Her hair was the kind of blonde that required maintenance appointments, and her dress probably cost more than my monthly feed bill. She wrinkled her nose at the dirt.

"Elliana," Damian said. My name in his mouth felt like theft. "You look... rustic."

I set down my trowel and wiped my hands on my jeans. I didn't answer.

"This is Dior," he continued, gesturing to the woman like she was a prize he'd won. "We're in the city now. Tribeca. You remember the brownstone."

I remembered. I'd paid for it in full. He'd stolen it with a forged signature.

Dior stepped closer, picking her way across the driveway like she was navigating a minefield. "So this is the country girl," she said brightly. Her laugh was sharp. "Damian's told me all about you. You used to be... together? Before he moved up in the world."

I looked at her. Then at him. I didn't blink.

Damian cleared his throat. "Look, I know things ended badly between us. But I'm willing to let that go. I'm doing well now — really well — and Dior and I need help with the house. Someone to manage things. Cook, clean, maybe watch the place when we travel."

He paused. The sun was in my eyes, but I didn't move.

"I'm offering you a job," he said. "Live-in. Good pay. You'd have your own room in the basement. It's a chance to get out of... this." He waved a hand at my farm like it was a problem that needed solving.

Dior leaned into him. "We're being generous," she added. "Most people wouldn't even consider hiring an ex. But Damian has a big heart."

I let the silence stretch. A breeze moved through the tomato plants. Somewhere behind the house, a chicken clucked.

Then I lifted my left hand and let the sun catch the diamond on my ring finger. Three carats. Flawless. Set in platinum.

Dior's smile froze.

"I already have a life," I said. My voice was quiet. Calm. "I have a husband. I have a business. I have everything I need."

Damian stared at the ring like it was a language he couldn't read.

"So thank you," I continued, "but I'm not interested in scrubbing your floors."

Dior's face went tight. "You're married?" She looked at Damian. "You said she was alone. You said she had nothing."

"I—" Damian started, but I wasn't finished.

"You should leave," I said. "Before my dog decides you're unwelcome."

On cue, Bear appeared in the doorway behind me. A hundred and fifty pounds of Tibetan Mastiff, black as midnight, with eyes that missed nothing. He didn't growl. He didn't need to. He just stood there, watching Damian with the kind of stillness that predators recognize.

Damian took a step back. "This is ridiculous. You're going to regret turning down my generosity, Elliana. You have no idea what you're walking away from."

"I know exactly what I'm walking away from," I said.

Dior grabbed his arm. "Let's go. This place smells like dirt anyway."

They got back in the Porsche. Damian revved the engine harder than necessary. Gravel spat under the tires as they peeled out.

I stood in the driveway until the sound faded completely. Then I walked back to the porch and sat on the top step. Bear settled beside me, his weight warm and solid against my leg.

The tomatoes needed watering. The chickens needed feeding. But I didn't move.

I pulled out my phone and called Arthur.

He picked up on the second ring. "Hey." His voice was low, steady. It always steadied me.

"He came here," I said.

"Damian."

"Yeah."

Arthur was quiet for a moment. "What did he want?"

"To hire me as his housekeeper."

Another pause. Then, quietly: "What do you need?"

I looked out at the driveway, at the dust still settling where the Porsche had been. "I'm ready to go back."

"To New York."

"Yeah."

"Then we go back," Arthur said. "Whenever you say the word. I'll be wherever you need me."

He didn't ask if I was sure. He never did. He trusted me to know my own mind.

"Thank you," I said.

"Always."

I hung up and sat there a little longer, scratching Bear behind the ears. The sun was starting to dip. The air smelled like grass and summer and the life I'd built from nothing.

But something had shifted. The door I'd closed eight years ago had just been kicked open again, and I wasn't the same woman who'd walked through it the first time.

I was ready.

I called Miles Hathaway the next morning. He picked up before the first ring finished.

"Elliana," he said. "Tell me you're ready."

"I'm ready."

I heard papers rustling. "Every document is in order. Bank transfers, deed records, the forensic analysis on the certificate. It's airtight."

"Good."

"When do you want to move?"

"Today."

Miles laughed. It was a sharp sound. "I've been waiting eight years to hear you say that."

I packed a single bag. I filled Bear's travel bowls and loaded them in the truck. I locked the farmhouse door and stood on the porch one last time, looking out at the rows of vegetables, the fence line, the sky.

Then I got in the truck and drove south.

Toward Manhattan.

Toward everything that had been stolen.

Toward the reckoning.
